I've Been Fly Fishing for 5 Years, and This Is the Genius Fishing Gear That Makes Every Trip a Success—From $8
There's nothing better than a day on the water—just me, my fly rod, and (hopefully) a few trout willing to play along. But getting to that peaceful, cast-after-cast rhythm takes some prep work, especially if you're just learning how to fly fish. I've learned over the years that showing up with the right gear makes a huge difference, not just in how the fishing is, but in how much fun I actually have. Going home with a sunburn after forgetting my SPF, or limping out of the river with blistered feet from wearing the wrong boots, is just as bad as leaving skunked.
Learning a new sport can b e intimidating, and trying to outfit yourself with all the right gear to get outside can be even more intimidating. So, I'm sharing the tried-and-true essentials you need to confidently and comfortably get a line in the water, like ultralight waders, a fly rod and reel kit, and comfortable shoes for the water. My setup is a mix of gear I've used for years and a few newer finds that have quickly earned permanent spots in my kit. If you're building out your own river kit, this is a great place to start. Shop my top picks from REI, Amazon, Orvis, and more, with gear starting at just $8.
Fly fishing is a gear-intensive hobby that requires you to have a lot of little stuff on you at all times. Spools of tippet, sunscreen, flies, sunglasses, chapstick, snacks—you need a comfortable place to put it all that won't get in the way or won't weigh you down. Enter this pack from Patagonia, which converts from a sling to a lumbar pack depending on your preference.
For 9 liters, it's surprisingly spacious. I wear mine on my hip most of the day, and it holds all my gear, and some. There are ample magnets and lash points, too, so I can hook on extra spools of fly line or my water bottle for easy access. Trust me—there are a lot of packs out there. This is one you'll actually want to carry with you. $88 at Dicks Sporting Goods $98 at Freeflyapparel.com
I'm ultra-picky about what pants I wear under my waders because a) I don't like sweating more than I have to, and b) I need something that stays in place. That's why I almost always reach for my Breeze Drift Pants from Free Fly. They're breezy, breathable, and have a slightly tapered leg that stays down under waders or looks cute on their own. I've worn them hiking, paddling, and post-fishing runs to the Dairy Queen, and they feel great doing it all. $75 at Amazon $75 at Cotopaxi.com
Invest in some solid UPF hoodies and shirts for extra protection while you're on the water, like this breathable hoodie by Cotopaxi. Despite its UPF 50+ protection, it's airy enough that you won't overheat, even when the sun is sweltering. The fabric is quick-drying and moisture-wicking, too, meaning you won't mind it getting splashed. Thoughtful touches, like the thumbholes and hood, offer added shade, which you can never have too much of.
You can spend a lot of money on waders and technical fishing apparel, but if you're looking for a pair to keep you cool and dry this summer that won't break the bank, I'd recommend the Ultralight Waders by Orvis. True to their name, they're shockingly lightweight, but still tough enough to handle brush and rocky banks.
The fit is dialed in for a woman's frame, so you're not constantly battling sagging or weird bunching in the knees. I especially love the adjustable shoulder straps that convert into a belt for warmer days when I wear them waist-high. Add in the built-in gravel guards and a chest pocket, and they're worth every penny.
Like the matching waders, these Orvis boots are supportive yet featherlight, which is rare for wading boots. The quick-dry synthetic materials keep them from staying soggy, and the Vibram soles grip surprisingly well on wet rocks and slick mud. You spend a lot of time standing and hiking in fly fishing, and I've found these boots to give me all-day comfort, even after 12+ hours on my feet.
When it's too hot for full waders and I'm confident I can get my feet wet without freezing, I strap these sandals on. The Teva Hydratrek sandals are my go-to for wet wading—they're sturdy, supportive, and grippy enough to handle whatever is underneath me. Unlike some water sandals that feel clunky or rub in weird places, these give you incredible ground-feel and grip, even when you're hiking into a more remote spot. They also clean up easily and dry fast, which is a must when you're bouncing between trail and stream.
You can't go fishing without your rod and reel. This all-in-one kit is ideal for both beginners and seasoned anglers who want a no-fuss setup. Redington's 9-foot, 5-weight rod is versatile enough for most freshwater situations, and the included reel is pre-spooled with quality line, so you're ready to cast right out of the case. I keep mine in the car for spontaneous trips because it's so portable and durable.
A multi-tool might not seem essential… until you need it. Whether I'm snipping line, tightening screws on my reel, or using pliers to un-snag a stray fly out of my sun hoodie, this thing comes in clutch. The Skeletool Cx is streamlined but still packs a serious punch, with pliers, wire cutters, a knife, and even a bit driver. It's lightweight enough to clip onto my belt loop and tough enough to withstand years of wear and tear. Plus, the bright colors always get tons of compliments and stand out in my pack for easy access. $40 at Amazon $40 at Yeti.com
Hydration is key, and this bottle keeps my water ice-cold even after hours in direct sun. The narrow mouth is easy to drink from on the move, and the stainless steel build is virtually indestructible. I can hook it to my fishing pack or shove it in the water bottle holder, and it doesn't leak—even when it inevitably falls out or rolls down a riverbank (get a brightly colored one you can easily spot in case that happens!). It's the kind of bottle you buy once and never need to replace.
I rarely fish without a hat, and I love this $8 find from Amazon. It's lightweight, breathable, and offers just enough shade to keep my face and neck from frying. The foldable design means it doesn't take up space, and if it blows into the river, it dries quickly. Just a solid, budget-friendly way to keep your cool.
As with any outdoor sport, you'll want to slather on SPF. The tricky thing is, fly lines and rods don't love sunscreen (especially if it's chemical, the ingredients can eat away at the materials). I always carry a stick in my bag that I can apply all over my face, while keeping the rubbing with my hands to a minimum.
Lately, I've been loving Tula's Protect + Go Sunscreen Stick, which comes in an easy-to-use applicator that's also easy to find (it's bright yellow, so it never gets lost in my pack). Bonus points for the better-for-you ingredients my skin slurps up in the sunshine.
The same goes for lip balm, which I am constantly reapplying on the river. Sunburned lips are the worst , and this balm saves me every time. It's packed with organic ingredients and has a smooth, buttery texture that actually stays put, even after eating or getting splashed.
Ask any angler what piece of gear they never fish without, and I bet they say polarized sunglasses. Quality eyewear is a non-negotiable on the water. On top of protecting your precious peepers, they cut glare, allowing you to see fish and structure better. You can drop a ton of money on good sunglasses, but I've been really impressed with Suncloud's affordable styles, which punch well above their price point. If you're new to fishing and not ready to spring for a $200 pair, these are a smart and functional pick.
I've lost way too many sunglasses overboard to ever fish without a retainer on my glasses again. Specifically, this floating strap from Chums, which costs $15 but has saved me probably hundreds of dollars in otherwise lost eyewear. The foam is floaty and bright, making it easy to spot before they drift away.
I use this for everything: drying my hands after handling fish, wiping down wet gear, or blotting sweat off my face. It's small but mighty, and the microfiber material absorbs way more than you'd expect. It dries quickly and comes with a clip, so it's easy to attach to your pack or vest. At just $10, it's a total no-brainer add-on for any outdoor adventure.

I'm over 40 and there are some bathing suits I just won't wear. Here are my favorite styles instead
Over-40 swimsuits quick picks Scoop-neck one-piece: Skims Signature Swim Scoop-Neck One-Piece Tummy-control one-piece: Cupshe V-Neck Tummy-Control One-Piece Tankini: Bleu Rod Beattie Print Ruffle Tankini Bikini bottom: Summersalt The Wrap High-Leg High-Rise Bikini Bottom Square-neck one-piece: Hunza G Square-Neck Swim One-Piece There comes a time in a woman's life when she realizes she can no longer wear certain items of clothing. For me, that moment came when I was packing for a beach vacation and was met with a sea of skimpy bikinis in eye-catching Day-Glo colors that I'd accumulated over the years. These would not do. That's not to say women over 40 shouldn't wear bikinis; I simply don't feel comfortable in the two-pieces I was wearing in my 20s and 30s. So, in search of some more flattering swimwear for my upcoming trip, I decided to call in some experts to see what I should be looking out for. If I want swimwear that fits, flatters, feels fashionable and is actually comfortable, stylist Elisa Ellis of Turnkey Style said to focus on features like 'high-waisted bottoms, ruching or twist designs. When it comes to the bust area, molded cups, built-in support and adjustable straps are nonnegotiables.' She added that 'these small details can make a big difference in how the suit fits and how confident you'll feel in it.' After an extensive search, I found that spending a little extra money on swimwear really makes a difference in the quality and fit too, which was directly proportional to how confident and comfortable I felt at the beach or lying poolside. 'There's a myth that you need to be a certain size to rock a swimsuit,' Ellis said. 'The truth? Confidence comes from the right fit, not the size on the tag. Choose a suit that makes you feel good [and] gives you confidence, and you will shine.' So, with that in mind, here are my favorite swimwear styles for women over 40. Skims Signature Swim Scoop-Neck One-Piece Black is a girl's best friend when it comes to having a slim silhouette, and this Kim Kardashian's Skims one-piece did not disappoint. Fashion stylist Sarah Nearis said Skims is one of her favorite brands for swimwear. "The brands that really know how to flatter a real woman's curves use the best material that make you feel secure and snatched, and have the cuts that hit in the right places to elongate the figure," she said. I loved the high leg of this suit, which really helped make me feel (and hopefully look) taller. Cupshe Ruffled One-Piece Swimsuit 'Ruching is wildly underrated," Ellis said. "I personally look for swimsuits with ruching because they flatter the figure and create a contoured look without making you hold your breath." She also recommends styles with a twist-front design, which she said "draws the eye inward and often includes built-in shaping panels for the tummy area." I love this colorful offering from Cupshe, which also has frills around the neckline to draw attention away from the midsection. Factory Scalloped One-Piece Swimsuit When it comes to swimwear, I tend to gravitate toward black for its slimming effects. When you are trying to hide anything you don't like about your body, black helps discreetly camouflage. Sure, it's not the most tropical of colors, but it works. What I love most about this one-piece from is the scalloped edging. It gives this otherwise boring suit a little je ne sais quoi. The swimsuit is fully lined, adjustable and super flattering. Cupshe V-Neck Tummy Control One-Piece Swimsuit Just like black, a pattern covers a multitude of sins, and I love this Cupshe one-piece for its bright colors and fun pattern. It is also very supportive around the cleavage and has ruching around the midsection. This is fast becoming one of my favorite swimsuits. Summersalt The Wrap High-Leg High-Rise Bikini Bottom I know I said I was done with bikinis, but after consulting Ellis, she said there are still ways to incorporate them into your summer wardrobe. 'Just because you're over 40 doesn't mean you have to ditch bikinis or bold colors. But you do want to look for styles that offer the right fit, structure, support and coverage for your body today,' she said. This Summersalt wrap bikini bottom — and the matching top — is flattering in all the right places and comes in a variety of colors. Hunza G Square-Neck Swim One-Piece I can't say enough about this swimsuit. At first, I balked at the price, but once I put it on, I fell in love and felt so confident in it. The crinkle fabric is both comfortable and flattering, and I really love the scoop back and high-leg cut of this style. According to Nearis, Hunza G's crinkle material is similar to ruching or draping on a dress, providing both texture and a smoothing effect to the figure. "Usually the scrunched material has a firmness in elasticity that creates more security and support, which any gal can appreciate in swimwear," she our review Bleu Rod Beattie Print Ruffle Tankini Offering more coverage than a string bikini but with the flexibility of a two-piece, we love a tankini. This one is so fun and flirty with the ruffle neckline and vibrant print. Summersalt The Sidestroke One-Piece Swimsuit I've loved Summersalt's swimwear line ever since it launched in 2017. I used to own a ton of bikinis from this brand, and they have really maintained their quality over the years. They have since been donated to my 30-year-old niece. This one-shoulder number is comfortable, flattering and looks great on any size. Lands' End SlenderSuit Tummy-Control Wrap One-Piece 'This swimsuit is bust-friendly for those with fuller chests," Ellis said. "The Slendertex fabric offers light sculpting, while the twist detail adds a flattering shape.' Like most of Lands' End's swimwear, this is available in petite, tall and long torso sizes, and it often has sales on swimwear. Boden Ruched Loop Swimsuit This one-piece has everything; ruching, a pattern that elongates the torso, a middle loop that cinches in the waist, a halter neck for support and a vintage style that screams summer. I get so many compliments when I wear this, and it looks great with a pair of denim shorts. Bleu Rod Beattie Halter Tankini The contrast white trim on this otherwise plain tankini really makes it stand out. I love a monochrome look, and I felt so confident in this suit. "I am a huge believer in, if you feel confident in a piece of clothing, then you can rock it. Whether it be a swimsuit or any type of outfit, I think it is important to enhance your favorite features and really lean into that so you feel good and confident," Nearis said. TA3 Lifty One-Piece Swimsuit This was a personal recommendation from Nearis and is also loved by our fashion editor Sophie Shaw, who said this viral swimsuit is very much worth the hype. Along with its medium compression for the tummy area, the lace-up back acts like a corset so you can tighten the fit as much or as little as you wish. Plus, the colorblocking creates a slimming illusion. The following FAQs have been answered by fashion stylist Sarah Nearis. Are tankinis most flattering for women over 40? Are tankinis most flattering for women over 40? 'Tankinis can work at any age, it really comes down to the fit and style,' Nearis said. 'Swimwear and any clothing looks best when it is enhancing your best features and silhouette. Making sure the fit and material has the best support and design to flatter your body is key.' Do high-waisted swimsuits look good on everyone? Do high-waisted swimsuits look good on everyone? 'I love a high-waisted swimsuit, no matter the age. A high-waisted swimsuit really hits at the highest and smallest part of the waist, which enhances your natural curves and shape, and elongates the legs,' Nearis said. How do you hide lower belly fat in a swimsuit? How do you hide lower belly fat in a swimsuit? According to Nearis, you can hide your lower stomach with specific silhouettes or accessories. 'It's all about finding the right pair of bottoms or a one-piece with the right material or pattern to distract from the area,' she said. She also recommends layering a sarong or skirt over your swimsuit for added coverage. For this article, we consulted the following experts to gain their professional insights. Candace Cameron Bure sizzles in string bikini while on tropical getaway with husband
Candace Cameron Bure is officially in vacation mode. On Wednesday, the "Full House" alum, 49, took to social media to share a series of photos from her tropical getaway with husband Valeri Bure. The first photo features the Great American Family star relaxing beachside in her string bikini, sunglasses and hat. Other photos include Candace hitting the gym, enjoying a boat ride and a summer bike ride with Valeri, and a relatable display of what heat and humidity can do to her hair. "Vacation mode: ON," she captioned the post, which was accompanied by the Beach Boys hit "Good Vibrations." "Enjoy friend you deserve it! And a workout IS a reward too!," one user commented. "I wish I had your commitment to working out. You look amazing," another wrote. Last month, Candace opened up about her goal of being in the "best shape" of her life as she enters her 50s next year. "That's what I'm working towards," she told Fox News Digital. "I've been filming a lot of movies, so I don't feel like I'm at my top right now because my fitness has to take a back seat while I'm filming movies, but I turned 49 this year and I have really big goals for myself just keeping active and healthy, but going into 50, I want to be in best shape that I can possibly be in." "So, my fitness game, once I finish this movie, at least in the gym, is going to kick it up a notch," she explained. "But honestly, I feel really great." Candace said she's been working on her fitness since she was in her early 30s, "and I'm in a groove, and I just want to approach life and aging as someone with grace, but also enthusiasm." "And leaning into all the things that I can do as I get older and preparing my body so that I can continue to do those things as I older," the actress told Fox News Digital. "Not so much from a vanity point of view, but like, you know, I want to be able to open the peanut butter jar when I'm 80, and I need grip strength for that. But all that comes from using your muscles and lifting weights and just basic skills." WATCH: CANDACE CAMERON BURE WANTS TO GET IN HER 'BEST SHAPE' AS SHE APPROACHES 50 She joked that she's not trying to age fast, "but it's the preparation of just being in the best shape that I can be as I get older."
