Fresh photos reveal major update for squalid home where murdered Queensland teen Pheobe Bishop spent her final days

Sky News AU01-07-2025
The squalid home where Queensland teenager Pheobe Bishop lived before she was allegedly murdered by her housemates has undergone an extensive cleanup.
Fresh photos, first published by the Courier Mail on Tuesday, have revealed the home in the regional town of Gin Gin near Bundaberg has been transformed from its once-derelict condition.
Rubbish seen just last month piled throughout the front yard has been removed, while parts of the property's exterior appear to have been repainted.
Dozens of empty bottles of Coke, Mountain Dew and other soft drinks once seen scattered on the front porch have also been taken away.

The development comes after photos in June laid bare the shocking state of the property where Pheobe spent her final days.
The images, captured by 7News, showed the floors strewn with what appeared to be furniture debris, clothing and rubbish.
Further footage showed stacks of trash on beds, garbage bags on the floor, and dog faeces throughout the home.
Earlier in the police investigation, there were reports a number of dead dogs had been removed from the property.

Pheobe was reported missing from the Gin Gin area after she failed to board her scheduled May 15 flight from Bundaberg to Western Australia to visit her boyfriend.
After a large-scale investigation, Pheobe's two housemates James Wood, 34, and his partner Tanika Bromley, 33, were charged with the teenager's murder.
Mr Wood and Ms Bromley have also been charged with two counts each of interfering with a corpse.
The Gin Gin property was declared a crime scene as detectives probed Pheobe's suspicious disappearance.

The landlords previously told 7News that Ms Bromley ticked all the boxes as a tenant when they first met her, but claimed she was on the verge of being evicted after the house failed its last inspection.
The landlords, who lived at the address when they were first married, claimed the home had sustained damage like patched holes on walls which were not there prior to Ms Bromley and Mr Wood moving in.
"The air tastes dirty and it smells just … I don't know how people can be breathing in this," one landlord said.
A GoFundMe page had been created on behalf of the landlords to help support the repairs and clean-up efforts.
The fundraiser, which is no longer accepting donations, raised $2,275.

Teacher stood down at private school in Brisbane suburb of Logan over alleged assault of student

A teacher at a private school has been stood down amid serious allegations involving a student. The Parklands Christian College in Park Ridge, about 40 min south o f Brisbane, confirmed the staff member's suspension in a letter sent to parents and caregivers on July 24, following concerns raised by the family of the student. The private co-educational school, which caters to students from Prep to Year 12, confirmed the suspension in a letter sent to parents and caregivers on July 24. The alleged incident is believed to have taken place around Easter. 7NEWS has obtained a copy of the letter, in which principal Gary Cully addresses the situation and assures the school community an external investigation is underway. Queensland police confirmed detectives from the Logan District Child Protection and Investigation Unit (CPIU) have launched an investigation after receiving a report involving a teacher at a Park Ridge school. Cully has urged families to remain calm and avoid speculation while authorities carry out their inquiries. 'I'm writing to inform you that a staff member has been stood down in response to a concern raised by a family in our parent and carer community,' Cully wrote. 'An external investigation is now underway, and the College is cooperating fully with the relevant authorities.' He added there is 'no current risk to students' and the school is remaining operational with 'all appropriate safeguards in place.' 'As a father with a child at this school, and as your principal, I am deeply saddened that an investigation of this nature is taking place at Parklands.' The principal urged families not to speculate or discuss the matter on social media, citing the sensitivity of the investigation. 'These situations are sensitive and complex, and it is important that we respond with wisdom, grace, and discretion,' the statement reads. The teacher has not been charged at this stage.

Next move in German backpacker saga

Weeks after a lost German backpacker was rescued from the remote Western Australian outback, her abandoned van has been recovered by local farmers. Carolina Wilga had seemingly vanished after she left the tiny township of Beacon, about 300km northeast of Perth, in her black and silver Mitsubishi camper van on June 29. Her van was located almost 150km from Beacon, bogged in a thick patch of isolated scrub on the Karroun Hill reserve, and Ms Wilga herself was rescued a short time later. Several weeks later, a group of determined locals have recovered Ms Wilga's abandoned vehicle. Ms Wilga was found 'ravaged by mosquitoes' and severely disoriented according to WA Police. 7News Credit: Channel 7 A video posted to the community-run Wheatbelt Way Facebook page documents the Sprigg family's efforts to remove the vehicle from the bush. 'Thank you to the Sprigg family for retrieving missing backpacker Carolina Wilga's van,' the post said. 'The community spirit in the Wheatbelt Way is unmatched.' Fred Sprigg, a member of the family who recovered the camper van, posted a comment on the video describing the recovery effort as an 'expensive exercise'. 'Was a community effort. Don't like leaving rubbish in the bush,' he said. It is understood the recovery operation took three days to complete, and Ms Wilga's friends in WA are expected to collect the vehicle so it can be returned to its owners. Ms Wilga's van had remained stranded in the bush since her rescue. 7 NEWS Credit: Channel 7 Ms Wilga was missing for 12 days, with her disappearance sparking an enormous search effort and capturing national attention. After almost two weeks of searching, the 26-year-old was found walking along the road about 24km away from her van by local Tania Henley, who described it as a 'miracle'. In a statement after her rescue, Ms Wilga explained she had got lost after losing control of her van and getting a knock to her head that left her confused. She said: 'First and foremost, I want to express a huge thank you from the bottom of my heart - a thank you that truly comes from the depths of my soul!' Ms Wilga was transported to Perth for treatment before returning to Germany.

Shock call on push to expel rapist MP

NSW Opposition leader Mark Speakman says the Liberal Party would support the expulsion of Kiama MP Gareth Ward from parliament only 'in principle', while it awaits the state government's legal advice. Ward was taken into custody on remand on Wednesday while awaiting sentencing after he was found guilty by a jury of three counts of indecent assault and a fourth count of intercourse without consent. The charges relate to acts against two young men – an 18-year-old at Meroo Meadow in 2013 and a 24-year-old man in Potts Point in 2015 – and sparked calls for the south coast MP to resign from parliament. Mr Speakman said on Monday he would support a motion to expel Ward if he did not resign. But, with a motion expected to be moved by Labor when parliament resumes on Monday, the Liberal leader said on Thursday 'in principle, we would support his expulsion if he does not resign'. 'Subject to that, in principle, we support it.' Mr Speakman said it appeared 'pretty clear' the parliament had the power to expel Ward under Standing Order 254, which manages expulsion of MPs deemed to have behaved in a way 'unworthy' of the house. 'The Premier has referred to legal advice he has obtained,' Mr Speakman said. 'Would invite the Premier to share that legal advice with his parliamentary colleagues so we can be completely assured that we are doing the legally correct thing. 'But, in principle, in principle, he should be expelled, but I would just like that T crossed and that I dotted.' NSW Opposition leader Mark Speakman said they would support a motion to expel ward 'in principle'. NewsWire / Nikki Short Credit: News Corp Australia Asked if he would support Ward's expulsion only after seeing the legal advice, Mr Speakman said: 'Let's cross that bridge. 'Certainly, in principle, we support his expulsion. 'I'd prefer to see him resign in the public interest. 'This is a pretty significant thing. It happens very rarely to expel a member from parliament, and I think my colleagues are entitled to see that advice.' Mr Speakman said Ward being in custody made the 'case for his departure from parliament even strong', and called on parliament to 'take every available legal step to remove him from parliament'. Premier Chris Minns earlier this week called on Ward to resign. Ward was remanded into custody while awaiting sentencing. NewsWire / Max Mason-Hubers Credit: News Corp Australia 'It is completely ridiculous to be in a situation where someone has been not accused, not charged, but convicted of incredibly serious offences and stay as a member of parliament,' the Premier said on Monday. 'I haven't spoken to all of my colleagues, and I haven't spoken to the crossbench or the opposition about it, but it would seem ridiculous that he would continue as a member of parliament.' Mr Minns confirmed the parliament had the power to remove Ward but noted it was important that the Legislative Assembly's decision 'is not punitive'. 'The punitive measure is up to the NSW court. It's not up to parliament,' he said. 'They'll make the decision about what punishment is applied, not us.'
