Malaysian pilgrims in Mecca told to wear masks as haze, heat worsen
MECCA: Hajj pilgrims should mask up as the air quality has reached unhealthy levels, says Malaysian hajj delegation head Hisham Harun.
He said that Malaysian pilgrims going out of their hotels to the Holy Mosque should take extra precautions, as many of those currently being treated are suffering from respiratory problems due to the exposure to the haze and heat.
Hisham, who is also Tabung Haji Haj Department head, was speaking to the Malaysian media here on May 20 during his weekly briefing on the Malaysian hajj pilgrims.
"As of May 20, we have 141 pilgrims warded with 12 of them at Arab Saudi hospitals and the rest at Tabung Haji medical centres.
"We expect the temperature in Mecca to reach between 45 to 50 degrees Celsius.
"So far, the temperature has already reached 44 degrees Celsius.
"Pilgrims are advised to avoid prolonged exposure to the hot weather and to always take care of their health.
"Considering the current dusty conditions, Hajj pilgrims are recommended to wear face masks when going out to the mosque," said Hisham.
According to iqair.com, on May 20, the Air Quality Index was at 153 - an unhealthy level requiring masking up.
Hisham also said that Tabung Haji is now in a strategic collaboration with Saudi German Hospital for the first time this Hajj season.
"This is to meet the requirements set by the government of Saudi Arabia, which mandates that all official Hajj delegations appoint a local private healthcare service provider to obtain approval to operate treatment centres and clinics. This is also a recognition of Malaysia's high standard of healthcare services," said Hisham.
A total of 31,600 Malaysian pilgrims are currently in Mecca to perform the hajj this year.
Two Malaysian pilgrims have died so far this year. Both were from heart attacks.

MECCA: There have been two more deaths of Malaysian haj pilgrims, bringing the total number of deaths to 13, says Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar. The Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs), in a statement on Thursday (June 12), said the two died early this morning at their respective hotels. "The first pilgrim, Ghazali Ab Rahman, 74, from Selising, Kelantan, passed away at the Al-Janadiriyyah Towers hotel, at 4am (Saudi time) due to a heart attack. "The second pilgrim is Hasmi Mohd Bojeng, 78, from Sibu, Sarawak. She passed away at 5:21 am (Saudi time) at the Rehab Al-Janadiriyyah hotel, also due to cardiac arrest. "Both deaths were confirmed by Tabung Haji medical personnel, namely Dr Syafiq Haziq Mahadi and Dr Wan Mohd Hafizullah Wan Mansor. "I extend my deepest condolences on the passing of two Malaysian Hajj pilgrims. This brings the total number of Malaysian pilgrim deaths for the 1446H/2025M Hajj season to 13," said Mohd Na'im. More than 31,600 Malaysians performed the hajj pilgrimage this year, which concluded on June 9. Malaysian pilgrims are set to begin returning home from June 14 onwards.

Sarawak company, Fudan University ink agreement on starting integrative medicine research centre in Miri

Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian said this collaboration will first involve the establishment of the Fudan SEA Institute of Integrative Medicine Miri Campus, followed by the establishment of the Fudan School of Medicine Miri Campus under phase two, while the final phase will be setting up Fudan University Miri Campus. 'Fudan University is among the two leading universities in China that have received Grade A recognition in integrative medicine and is among the top 50 universities in the world. 'We will continue discussions with them to make this effort a reality. The state government delegation is very happy with the positive development of this initiative, and we are very grateful to the Malaysian Consul General in Shanghai, who has been very helpful in continuing these discussions,' he said, according to a Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) report. 'We still need about 2,000 doctors in Sarawak; we always need more doctors trained at Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) and from other medical schools. 'I hope that with the establishment of this medical school, it can help us in facing the ageing population and gaining autonomy in the fields of medicine and education,' he said. This was followed by a closed-door meeting with the university's top leadership. 'Superdad' wins hearts after raising three ailing sons alone for past 7 years
KUALA LUMPUR: A Malaysian father has earned widespread praise after resigning from his job to fulfil a promise to his late wife, raising their three sons, each with serious health conditions, entirely on his own for the past seven years. According to SCMP, Khairul Abdullah's life changed irrevocably in August 2018 when his wife died unexpectedly from a severe bacterial blood infection. At the time, their three sons were aged four, two, and just a few months old. Determined to care for them full-time, Khairul tendered his resignation as a designer at a private firm on the very day his wife passed away. He later began working as a freelance Islamic insurance adviser, a role that gave him the flexibility he needed to support and be present for his children. "From that day onwards, my children became my sole priority," he said. "Freelancing allows me to be with them whenever they need me." "When they were still very young and grieving their mother's absence, they needed me constantly. I even turned down help from my parents because I didn't want the children to be apart from me." Khairul faced numerous challenges. His eldest son was diagnosed with autism, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and a heart condition. His second son struggled with psychological trauma following their mother's death, while the youngest, now seven, suffers from selective mutism. Fortunately, Khairul's late wife had ensured he was well prepared, teaching him how to cook, change nappies, trim nails and manage the household. "So when she passed, I wasn't lost, I just felt incredibly lonely and knew I had to shoulder everything myself," he said. His daily routine begins at 5.30am. He prepares breakfast and school meals before waking his sons, followed by completing the household chores, from laundry to cleaning. Despite occasionally seeking psychological support to cope with emotional exhaustion, he remained steadfast in his commitment to one important ritual: ensuring his sons express love for one another. "Eventually, they began saying 'I love you' not just to me, but also to our relatives. That really moved me," he said. Reflecting on his journey, Khairul said the experience had given him a deep appreciation for the sacrifices of mothers and homemakers. He encouraged all husbands to be more involved and supportive of their wives in raising a family. He also urged single parents to accept their circumstances and prepare themselves mentally for life's unpredictability. "Once you accept your reality, it becomes easier to plan for the future. Regardless of gender, everyone should know how to cook, drive, and care for children, just in case." Khairul's story, first reported by Sin Chew Daily, has resonated with thousands online, with netizens hailing him as a real-life superhero. "This dad truly is a 'superdad'.
