Big news for Beatles fans: FAMSF extends Paul McCartney photo exhibition
The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco has extended the popular photography exhibition ' Paul McCartney Photographs 1963-64: Eyes of the Storm,' giving visitors nearly three additional months to catch the show.
Initially planned to run through July 6, at the de Young Museum, it will now be on view through Oct. 5 — marking the first time in its global tour that the show has been extended.

Museum officials also promise more programming surrounding the exhibition, including a special screening of the acclaimed documentary miniseries 'McCartney 3, 2, 1' scheduled for June 21. Meanwhile, visitors have an opportunity to check out the show until 9:30 p.m. Thursday, June 12, as part of its Late Night Editions series that features live music and food trucks.
The exhibition was originally presented at the National Portrait Gallery in London in June 2023, and has traveled to the Brooklyn Museum and Portland Museum of Art. But the de Young is the show's only California stop.
The museum reports that in the first weeks after its March 1 opening, 'Eyes of the Storm' welcomed 85,000 attendees. FAMSF said that 100,000 have seen it overall.
The exhibition features more than 250 photos by the 82-year-old Beatles musician, along with archival footage and other images of the band. The photos were rediscovered in the artist's personal archive in 2020, and show the band's rise to global stardom from December 1963 through February 1964 during a tour that took them from local venues in Liverpool to their debut on 'The Ed Sullivan Show,' taped in New York and Miami. McCartney was 21 at the time, armed with a 35 mm Pentax single-lens reflex camera during the birth of what came to be known as 'Beatlemania.'
The Beatles formed in Liverpool, England, in 1960, with McCartney on the bass, guitarists John Lennon and George Harrison, and drummer Ringo Starr. The band is considered one of the most influential groups in music history, credited with helping usher in what became known as the British Invasion in the United States in the early '60s.
McCartney and Starr, 84, are the only living members of the band. Lennon was 40 when he was assassinated in 1980, and Harrison died at 58 of lung cancer in 2001.
During their decade together, the Beatles performed in the Bay Area three times — at the Cow Palace in Daly City in August 1964 and again in August 1965, and at Candlestick Park on Aug. 29, 1966. The San Francisco show was their final concert ever before the band broke up in 1970.
The de Young's decision to extend the exhibition is notable amid a time of uncertainty for art institutions nationwide, as many face major federal funding cuts and the Trump administration's ongoing efforts to dismantle the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

‘High in the Clouds' Shares Original Music, Early Art and a Beatles Reunion in Annecy Sneak Peek
Audiences at the Annecy Animation Festival got a first look at the upcoming CG-animated film 'High in the Clouds,' based on Paul McCartney's book of the same name that features the voices of McCartney, Ringo Starr, Lionel Richie, Céline Dion and more. Director Toby Genkel and project supervisor Christian De Vita joined Gaumont's president of global animation, Terry Kalagian, to talk about the arduous eight-year process of bringing the story to the screen as well as collaborating with McCartney on the film. 'It shouldn't be about me,' Genkel recalls McCartney saying early on. 'Yeah, OK, my name is all over the poster, but you get the point.' He sets out to find his mother's old bandmates – played by McCartney (as a walrus named McKenzie, obviously), Starr (a bird named Roy) and Richie (a bison named Gladstone) — and accidentally sparks a revolution. The panelists, as well as McCartney via a video message, made it very clear they didn't want 'High in the Clouds' to be a musical, but they did want it to be about the power of music. McCartney wrote 13 original songs for the film, which audiences got to hear a bit of during the presentation, but 'High in the Clouds' will only use 6 of them. Still, the panelists explained that the finished film would play different versions of the songs, changing them slightly according to the singer and the place in the story where they're played. Accompanying the songs is also a score by Academy Award winner Michael Giacchino. Though no finished footage was shown, Annecy audiences got a glimpse at concept art and some early renders by Studio 88. Genkel and De Vita talked about wanting the movie to feature anthropomorphic animals who would not have animal mannerisms but still feature some animal traits (like Wirral being quick and agile like a squirrel). Some of the concept art shown included Gretsch's empire, an island filled with industrial pipes in a shape resembling a Facehugger from the 'Alien' franchise, while the rebellious musicians live in a colorful city in the clouds made out of hot air balloons and airships. 'High in the Clouds' is aimed at family-friendly audiences of all ages, but it does feature themes of revolution and oppression, as well as freedom of expression. Balancing the message with a lighter tone was a challenge, particularly when it came to depicting Gretsch's army. Rather than actual soldiers, she is surrounded by an army of devoted fans who make their own uniforms and create gadgets for her to use. At the end of the presentation, audiences caught a video message from McCartney talking about his love of animation and how John Lennon inspired the main character of Wirral. They then got glimpses of McCartney and Starr recording lines for the film. McCartney said the film is a big homage to his first wife, Linda, who passed away in 1998 and inspired the character of Sugartail. Fear not, mere mortals, as even world-famous Hollywood actors can get starstruck. Jeff Goldblum joined Thursday's edition of 'Late Night with Seth Meyers' to promote his latest jazz album, only to reveal that he encountered his lifelong idol at a recent Broadway performance of George Clooney's play 'Good Night, and Good Luck.' 'I saw the great George Clooney and his wonderful play, very important, very great, but I found out shortly before we went, guess who's also going to be there?' Goldblum teased. 'Paul McCartney. Paul... McCartney. I have never met Paul McCartney.' 'I was very excited,' he admitted. 'And then sure enough, after the play, I was looking and we both got a chance to go backstage and meet George and the cast. I saw him in the flesh for the first time ever, and there he was. My golly, I'm very starstruck.' Wicked star Jeff Goldblum reveals that once celebrity he was 'very starstruck' by
Jeff Goldblum was "very starstruck" when he got to meet George Clooney for the first time. The 72-year-old actor has worked with A-listers such as Julia Roberts, Matthew Broderick and Ariana Grande over the course of his decades-long career in film, but admitted that he was very taken aback when he got to see the Ticket to Paradise star backstage at his Broadway show Good Night, and Good Luck alongside Beatles legend Sir Paul McCartney. Speaking on Late Night with Seth Meyers, he said: "I was very excited. After the play, I was looking and [McCartney and I] both got a chance to go backstage and meet George and the cast. "I saw him in the flesh for the first time ever, and there he was. "I just thought 'My golly, I'm very starstruck,' because he means a lot to me." The Wicked actor described George as being "very nice" to him and couldn't help but "brag" in revealing that it was the former ER star who asked him for a picture, as opposed to the other way round. "He was very is bragging, I shouldn't do it. "But he said, 'Jeff, Jeff Goldblum. I love Jeff Goldblum. Come here, Jeff, let's take a picture,' and all that stuff. "It made my life and my year." Meanwhile, Jeff was full of praise for the Beatles and recounted discovering the rock band - which also consisted of John Lennon, Ringo Starr, and George Harrison - in his early teen years. He added: "Everybody, you've all got stories like this." "But I was a kid when I Want to Hold Your Hand and 'She Loves You, came out. "And I remember Suzy Connolly ... in her cut-off jean shorts, and I was like 12, 13... "And they went, 'Here, come and listen to this song.' It's all mixed in my nostalgic bosom in a way that's very, very exciting and meaningful."
