Downpatrick: Erenagh Monastery site believed to be found after dig
The two-week excavation was organised by the Community Archaeology Programme Northern Ireland (CAPNI) and offered a host of local school groups and aspiring Indiana Jones' of all ages and backgrounds the chance to work as an archaeologist.
Erenagh's importance for Irish archaeology
Brian Sloan, from Queen's University Belfast who was helping to guide the team, said Erenagh's significance was in it being one of the first Cistercian monasteries in Ireland. "They took a European model, so if you think of the old Irish monasteries like a Nendrum, you'd have a round tower with your church in the centre. "But with this you'd have a cloister. That's a series of buildings around the church that feed into the monastery."
Originally built in 1127, the monastery operated for half a century before John de Courcy destroyed it.Mr Sloan said he later built the cathedral at Inch Abbey as "an act of penance" and made that into a Cistercian monastery. The ruins of Inch still stand on the other side of Downpatrick and, in recent years, were a major filming location for Game of Thrones.Last year, a geophysical survey found that the Erenagh field, which is located just a few hundred yards from Ballynoe Stone Circle, was filled with anomalies.
Three trenches were selected for excavation with volunteers digging, scraping and brushing deep into the earth in search of evidence.Among them were a group from South Eastern Regional College's Skills for Life and Work course, led by Anne Murphy."The course is an opportunity for students to gain GCSEs where the school system hasn't been able to help them do that," she said."We've 14 students here, which is the biggest attendance all week as everyone is very excited – some are looking for bars of gold."
What did people find at the suspected monastery site?
Bars of gold may have proven elusive, but the group did make finds.Among those in the trench was Billie, who said she's been interested in archaeology since childhood."This is my second dig and I'm loving it," she said. "I've collected fossils and crystals since I was about nine. "We've found a few bits of slag and slate so far."
Also in the trench was Eoin, who said: "We've found bits of slate which were the roof tiles so we're hoping to find more later on."I've always had an interest in palaeontology, but this is my first dig."In a separate trench further up the hill are friends and volunteers Valerie Shearer and Janice McHenry, who were deep in competition to find the best artefact."My most interesting piece is a little bit of stone, but I haven't got it checked yet so I don't now if it is valuable or rubbish," said Valerie.
"I'd love to find a piece of pottery, but she beat me to it," said Janice. "It is very therapeutic because you aren't thinking of anything other than finding something."Among the finds at the dig were a section of wall, cut stones with a masons mark, pottery, slate and a Henry III coin dating from around 1270.Organisers of the dig will now study the findings, but they say they are confident radiocarbon analysis of the artefacts will confirm this was the location of Erenagh's long lost monastery.

Coldplay's Chris Martin addresses keeping kiss cam on tour after previous 'debacle'
Coldplay performed in Hull earlier this week and whilst at Craven Park, singer Chris Martin spoke about using a 'kiss cam' on the tour after a scandal just weeks ago Coldplay's Chris Martin has addressed the band's decision to continue using a 'kiss cam' at their concerts following a scandal earlier on their latest tour. He spoke about the situation at the first of their shows in the UK this week. Last month, there was controversy after two people were seen getting cosy at one of the band's concert in the US. They were later named as Kristin Cabot and Andy Byron, who are reportedly married but not to each other. Following the gig in Boston, Massachusetts, Chris, 48, later teased that the 'kiss cam' would continue on the Music of the Spheres tour. He's since spoken about the decision to engage with audiences in that way on the world tour. As reported by HullLive, he made reference to the scandal at the first of their gigs at Craven Park in Hull on Monday. It's just one of two European cities, alongside London, that feature on Coldplay's tour schedule for this year. The reference came as he interacted with the crowd and attempted to read out signs that were held up. Footage shows Chris saying at one point whilst not performing on stage at the gig: "Thank you for letting us visit." He continues by telling fans in the audience at the venue that evening: "We're so happy to be here. And uh ... many of you have written signs. So, I'll take some time to try and read some signs. So, then we'll see what happens, okay?" As he attempts to read one of the signs, he's heard saying: "First of all 'three times in three months' [and you] were at that Boston gig." Prompting later moments later, Chris said: "Well, okay, thank you for coming again after that debacle." According to the outlet, he later spoke again to the crowd and introduced the 'kiss cam'. Chris revealed that the band will continued to include the feature at their shows as a way of meeting some fans in the audience. He said: "We've been [stopping shows to talk to fans for] a long time and it is only recently that it became a ... yeah. So yeah, life throws you lemons and you've got to make lemonade. So, we are going to keep doing it because we are going to meet some of you." Last month, footage from the Gillette Stadium in Boston went viral on social media due to a moment during the 'kiss cam'. It showed the two audience members on a balcony. Addressing the pair, who appeared to be swaying to the music whilst holding hands, Chris said: "Oh look at these two!" They were also seen reacting to being broadcast on a screen. One of them quickly covered their face before turning their back to the camera, whilst the other ducked out of view. Chris went on to say: "Alright. Come on, you're okay." He appeared to then tease over their reactions, saying to the audience at the venue during the gig: "Oh what? Either they're having an affair or they're just very shy." As the video ends, he begins to say: "I'm not quite sure." The audience were heard laughing initially as the pair hid from the camera after first being spotted cuddled up together. Fans later appeared to be cheering and even whistling as Chris teased over the situation during the gig though.

Natalie Portman becomes frontrunner to play Sinead O'Connor in biopic about her life
Natalie Portman is reportedly the frontrunner to play Sinead O'Connor in a biopic about her life. The Irish Grammy-winning singer passed away from natural causes at the age of 56 in July 2023 - just 18 months after the death of her son. In the days leading up to her tragic passing, Sinead was rumoured to be deep in discussions for a biopic inspired by her life. Now, Natalie is said to be in the running to take on the role, with a source telling The Sun: 'Natalie is the actress the filmmakers want to play Sinéad. 'They think she is the spit of Sinéad in terms of her physicality but as an actress, they know she has the strength and power to do justice to Sinéad.' Earlier this week, Variety reported that Irish production company ie: entertainment, which executive produced the O'Connor documentary is behind the film. Daily Mail has contacted Natalie Portman's representative for comment. The film was previously have said to have been based on her June 2021 autobiography Rememberings. According to insiders in 2023, the iconic artist had been considering a star-studded cast for the pivotal role, which included Hollywood's Demi Moore. Irish actress Saoirse Ronan was also in the running to play an earlier stage in Sinead's life as well as Niamh Algar. A source explained that when exploring initial concepts for the film, Sinead liked the idea of a 'triptych approach' and envisioned a film that would spotlight three distinct actresses. They added that this creative direction playfully alluded to the Catholic Church's symbolic trinity of father, son, and the Holy Ghost and added a touch of satire into the narrative. An inquest into Sinead son Shane's death in November said the pair had a 'complex and turbulent' relationship but were also very close and 'in some way dependent on each other throughout their lives.' The body of Shane O'Connor, 17, was found in a secluded area at the back of a housing estate outside Bray, Co Wicklow on January 7, 2022 less than 24 hours after he was reported missing from Tallaght University Hospital in Dublin. The Nothing Compares 2 U singer, who formally identified her son's body to gardaí, died suddenly herself from natural causes just 18 months later in London. At the time of Shane's death, he was due to be under supervised 24/7 one-to-one care. A sitting of Dublin District Coroner's Court heard the teenager had been brought to the emergency department by his mother on December 29, 2021 after a drug overdose, in what was believed to be an attempted suicide. Sinead O'Connor's father Sean described how his daughter and Shane were 'very close.' 'They loved each other madly,' he observed. Mr O'Connor outlined how the singer was also suffering mental health issues around the same time of her son's death.
