Aberdeen to become first Scottish university to open campus in India

STV News5 hours ago

Aberdeen is set to become the first of the UK's ancient and Scottish universities to open a campus branch in India.
Plans for the university's global expansion ambitions took a step forward after India's University Grants Commission (UGC) gave permission to progress with proposals to open a branch campus in Mumbai in September 2026.
The proposal will now go to the university's governing body court for approval next month.
The University of Aberdeen was granted a Letter of Intent at a special ceremony on Saturday in Mumbai, hosted by the Indian Government, as discussions remain ongoing between the UGC and Transnational Education partners in India. The new Mumbai campus will offer Computing and Data Science, Business Management, Economics, Artificial Intelligence programs and an MBA with future expansion into Mathematics and International Business Management and Information Systems, Public Health, Film Studies and Psychology.
A follow up second phase would see the university aim to establish a research and innovation office on the proposed new campus to expand research collaborations and industry partnerships in critical areas such as AI, Energy and Life Sciences.
Professor Siladitya Bhattacharya, vice-principal of global engagement at the University of Aberdeen, said: 'We are excited to progress our global ambitions after the Indian Government gave us approval to proceed with our intention for a campus.
'As a country of over 1.4bn where 50% of the population are under 25, India has long been a priority area for our global engagement strategy focusing on student recruitment, articulation partnerships, research collaborations and alumni networks.
'We are looking forward to collaborating with our Indian partners to bring this vision to life and further bolster ties between Scotland and India through education and research.'
Alison Barrett MBE, country director India at the British Council, said: 'The University of Aberdeen's decision to progress with a campus in Mumbai marks an important moment in deepening the education partnership between India and the UK.
'It reflects our shared commitment to advancing the internationalisation of higher education, research, and innovation, as envisioned in India's National Education Policy 2020.
'As the first Scottish university to be granted permission to set up a campus in India, this is more than just an institutional milestone; it underscores how education can serve as a bridge between nations, fostering cultural exchange, mutual respect, and creating global opportunities for students and academics alike. We are proud to support initiatives that bring world-class education closer to students in India.'

Milos Kerkez to Liverpool one step away and 'could be completed this week'

Liverpool have been busy in the summer transfer window after already sealing a deal for Jeremie Frimpong and they are now hoping to completes two big deals for both Florian Wirtz and Milos Kerkez Liverpool are closing in on a deal for Bournemouth left-back Milos Kerkez and could even complete the transfer this week, according to reports. Arne Slot is continuing to strengthen his side as he looks to build on their Premier League triumph in his first season in charge, having already signed Jeremie Frimpong to replace Trent Alexander-Arnold at right-back. ‌ Liverpool have also agreed a record-breaking £116.5million deal to sign Bayer Leverkusen playmaker Florian Wirtz - who is seen as someone the club can build their future around. ‌ But the Reds are also looking to bolster their numbers at left-back too alongside the Wirtz deal and have been working on a deal for Kerkez, who was one of the standout stars in his position in the 2024-25 Premier League season. There have been some concerns over the long-term future of Andy Robertson, while Kostas Tsimikas has also been linked with an exit from Anfield. According to the i Paper, talks between Liverpool and Bournemouth are now at an "advanced stage" over a package worth between £40m and £45m. It adds that while there are still a few issues to iron out, a deal is expected to be reached by the end of the week that will end months of speculation over Kerkez's future. Bournemouth chief Simon Francis has been engaged in talks with Liverpool supremo Richard Hughes for the last few weeks, the report claims, with the Cherries refusing to budge on their valuation of the player. ‌ But after making progress in talks, the two sides are now discussing on how the fee for Kerkez will be structured. Personal terms are not expected to be an issue, with the player signing a five-year deal. It would mark a huge week for Liverpool, who are also hoping to wrap up the signing of Wirtz after agreeing to pay a British club record fee for the midfielder after his sensational season in the Bundesliga. Wirtz will compete with the likes of Dominik Szoboszlai and Luis Diaz, while Kerkez's arrival should provide competition for Robertson - though the Scottish international has admitted he is in the dark over his future at Liverpool. Speaking to Sky Sports this week, he said: "We have discussed [my future], of course we have. 'We've had good discussions, me and the club, but what the future holds, I'm not sure. All I know is I fly off on holiday and it's well needed. I need a rest after a long season, and then I look forward to pre-season." Ignore 'hysteria' around Loch Lomond Flamingo Land, says developer

Lomond Banks – owned by theme park operator Flamingo Land – has proposed to build more than 100 lodges, two hotels, a water park, monorail and parking spaces for more than 300 cars at the site, on the southern shores of the loch at Balloch, West Dunbartonshire. Last week, the Scottish Government took the decision to call in the application, which had been given the green light by a Government reporter despite heavy backlash from campaigners. The reporter elected to approve the application, subject to 49 conditions, despite the unanimous rejection of the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park authority and objections from the Woodland Trust, the National Trust for Scotland and the Scottish Environmental Protection Agency (Sepa). Minister Ivan McKee had previously ruled out an intervention on the issue but, last week, said the decision was of 'national significance'. The decision came 24 hours before a motion tabled by Labour deputy leader Dame Jackie Baillie was due for a vote, with the motion passing unanimously. 'We have engaged with the planning process in good faith, following every regulation and expectation set by the National Park and Scotland's new national planning framework,' he said. 'The land in question has been allocated for sustainable tourism development for decades, a fact acknowledged by the DPEA (Planning and Environmental Appeals Division) reporter. 'To have this long-established planning context disregarded at the 11th hour raises serious questions not only about the integrity and consistency of the Scottish planning system, but also about Scotland as an investment destination.' The director went on to urge ministers to back the proposals. 'We now call on all ministers, especially the planning minister, to uphold the integrity of the planning system,' he said. READ MORE: SNP minister clashes with BBC Scotland host over Scottish independence 'This process must remain impartial and evidence-led, not subjected to political opportunism or pressure campaigns built on misinformation. 'The rules must apply fairly and equally to all, or public trust in the system will be irreparably damaged. 'We urge the Scottish Government to see through the hysteria and consider not just the facts of this proposal, but the precedent it sets for all future investment in Scotland.' Paterson accused opponents of the development – spearheaded by Scottish Green MSP Ross Greer – of a 'sensationalist and misleading campaign' full of 'mistruths and inaccuracies'. Contrary to the 150,000 people who signed a petition to halt the plans, and the 50,000 who wrote to the Scottish Government to intervene, Mr Paterson claimed the project has 'strong local support'. 'Anyone genuinely interested in the views of the Scottish people need only look at the widespread positive engagement on social media and elsewhere, reflecting a clear desire for sustainable, year-round economic activity and job creation,' he said. According to a study commissioned by Lomond Banks, 200 jobs would be created in the area, 80 full-time and 120 part-time or seasonal, though the study suggested a net of just 61 jobs would result from the £43.5 million development. Paterson also took issue with the description of Flamingo Land as a 'Yorkshire company'. 'Flamingo Land is a Scottish-registered business, incorporated in 1973, and all taxable profits are retained within Scotland,' he said. The company is registered at an address in Uddingston, South Lanarkshire, but its key site is in Yorkshire, with all three of the firm's active directors on Companies House being based south of the border.
