FIFA Club World Cup: Dortmund holds off Sundowns to close in on knockouts

The Hindu6 hours ago

Borussia Dortmund held off a spirited comeback from South African champion Mamelodi Sundowns to secure a 4-3 victory on Saturday and move closer to the Club World Cup knockout stages.
Dortmund was behind after 11 minutes at the TQL Stadium but rallied to win its second game in Group F and move top of the standings with four points, one more than Sundowns.
Felix Nmecha, Serhou Guirassy, and Jobe Bellingham scored for the Bundesliga club, which also profited from an own goal.
Lucas Ribeiro had given Sundowns the lead, while Iqraam Rayners and Lebo Mothiba scored in the second half as the side looked to rally from 4-1 down in a competitive game played in blazing hot conditions with a mid-day kickoff.
Ribeiro burst through a static Dortmund defence, picking up the ball on the halfway line and gliding past two opponents to score a shock opener.
But the lead lasted only five minutes before a calamitous error from Sundowns goalkeeper Ronwen Williams, who played a short pass to Nmecha, who had an easy tap-in for the equaliser.
Dortmund went ahead after a slick set of one-two passes between Julian Brandt and Guirassy, who powered home with his head.
Bellingham, in his second appearance for Dortmund, made it 3-1 on the stroke of halftime as Williams parried Brandt's cross straight at him, and he delayed shooting for a split second before wrong-footing the goalkeeper.
Rayners struck the woodwork for Sundowns 10 minutes into the second half, but on the hour mark, Daniel Svensson's cross from the left took a wicked deflection off Sundowns' fullback Khuliso Mudau as Dortmund extended its lead.
Two minutes later, the South African side pulled one back as Teboho Mokoena's free kick was floated to Rayners, who struck the foot of the post but did not waste the second opportunity off the rebound.
Mothiba struck in the 90th minute as Sundowns stole away possession, and the substitute scored from close range, but the side could not find an equaliser.

Inter Milan strike late to beat Urawa Reds at Club World Cup

SEATTLE: Valentin Carboni struck the winning goal in stoppage time as Inter Milan came from behind to beat Urawa Red Diamonds 2-1 on Saturday and knock the Japanese team out of the Club World Cup. Ryoma Watanabe got an early opening goal for Urawa Reds, who were backed by a noisy contingent of their supporters at Lumen Field in Seattle. But captain Lautaro Martinez had got Inter's equaliser in their 1-1 draw with Monterrey of Mexico in their first match at the tournament, and he repeated the trick to level matters here with 12 minutes to go. Carboni, the 20-year-old Argentine who had not made an appearance for Inter in more than two years, then appeared in the 92nd minute to give the Italians the victory. "Our opponents play with their hearts and to counter that as a team we need to play with more pride, be humble and know how to suffer," Martinez told broadcaster DAZN after Inter were made to work for the victory. The result leaves Cristian Chivu's team in a good position to now go and qualify for the last 16, while a second defeat in as many matches means Urawa Reds are eliminated. "Our emotion is very bad after this game. We are out of the tournament so now we can only fight in the last game to achieve our one and only win," said their Polish coach Maciej Skorza.

Ill Kylian Mbappe out of second Real Madrid Club World Cup clash

PALM BEACH GARDENS: Ill Real Madrid striker Kylian Mbappe did not travel to Charlotte for the team's Club World Cup match against Pachuca, but could be back for the final group stage game, coach Xabi Alonso said on Saturday. The French superstar was taken to hospital on Thursday for tests and treatment after suffering gastroenteritis, before later being released. Mbappe is improving "bit by bit" a club source told AFP, but he did not fly with his team-mates for Sunday's match against Mexican side Pachuca. Real coach Xabi Alonso addressed the striker's condition during his pre-match press conference. "He's doing better, he's back from the hospital and is recovering. We're optimistic about having him against Salzburg," he said. Madrid face Salzburg in the final game of Group H on Thursday in Philadelphia. The 26-year-old missed the opening game with the same illness as Madrid were held 1-1 by Al-Hilal in Xabi Alonso's debut as coach. Madrid B-team player Gonzalo Garcia, 21, started in Mbappe's stead and opened the scoring for Real Madrid against their Saudi Arabian opponents. Alonso indicated that Gonzalo would again deputise for the Frenchman. "Gonzalo can do what he did the other day. He scored a goal and had three chances. Looking ahead, we'll see what happens. Having players with that sense of smell is very important. He did very well," he said. Mbappe finished as the European Golden Shoe winner in his first season at Real Madrid with 31 goals in La Liga and 43 across all competitions, but Los Blancos finished the season without a major trophy.
