Forget Ray-Ban Meta — HTC just unveiled Vive Eagle smart glasses that look like a stylish AI breakthrough

Smart glasses aren't just a new trend anymore, they're very much here. And so far, AI glasses have been dominated by Meta — I, for one, love the company's Ray-Ban smart specs. But HTC has just come from out of nowhere and launched a pair of its own that seriously challenge the sleek stylings and technological smarts of Zuck's glasses.
Whether you're looking for a pair of AI glasses like the Vive Eagle, or AR specs to watch and play in comfort on long haul flights, I've got you. I have been testing pairs for over four years, and have ranked the best smart glasses you can buy.
Named the HTC Vive Eagle, these glasses are lighter, pack a much bigger battery, sport Zeiss lenses for great UV protection, and even support both the biggest AI models you can use right now.

Battery capacity

235 mAh
Specification-wise, these two pairs of specs are largely the same. But there are three critical differences to talk about that could give HTC a narrow lead here.
First, battery life. With a far bigger capacity in that cell, you should get all-day longevity out of these for your key tasks. Second, they're slightly lighter on the face — the tiniest bit, but every little reduction matters.
Third, instead of only having Meta AI, users can pick between using Google Gemini or ChatGPT as the assistant. Don't get me wrong, Meta AI is good, but these two models have shot ahead in terms of multi-modal assistance, so putting it directly on camera glasses is really exciting.
These specs even do real-time text-to-speech translation across 13 languages — far beyond Meta's support for four languages!
Ever since buying the transparent Ray-Ban Meta glasses, I've been a sucker for anything that is see-through or transparent. So to see HTC pick up on this in its aesthetic across all colors makes them look gorgeous — techy-yet-refined.

So how much are they? Well, we only know the price in Taiwan right now (more on that later), but that NT$15,600 cost converts to roughly $520, which is quite a step above the $299 asking price of the Ray-Ban Metas! However, the pre-order price of a pair of Eagles gets you two years of Vive AI Plus for free. We're not exactly sure what you get for that, aside from another monthly subscription, but the choice to sell them directly to Taiwan Mobile customers as part of their phone plans should offset the price a little.
This is a tricky question to answer. Currently, they're only initially available in Taiwan. Pre-orders go live today, and they launch on September 1, but HTC has told me that the company doesn't have a window for an international release soon.
That means we could be in for the long haul waiting for these to launch, which sucks! These glasses look so cool, and with access to ChatGPT or Google Gemini, they could very well be more intelligent too — especially in multimodal use.
Fingers crossed they land in the U.S. and U.K. sooner rather than later.

Senior, 76, died while trying to meet Meta AI chatbot ‘Big sis Billie' — which he thought was real woman living in NYC

A cognitively impaired New Jersey senior died while trying to meet a flirtatious AI chatbot that he believed was a real woman living in the Big Apple — despite pleas from his wife and children to stay home. Thongbue Wongbandue, 76, fatally injured his neck and head after falling in a New Brunswick parking lot while rushing to catch a train to meet 'Big sis Billie,' a generative Meta bot that not only convinced him she was real but persuaded him to meet in person, Reuters reported Thursday. The Piscataway man, battling a cognitive decline after suffering a 2017 stroke, was surrounded by loved ones when he was taken off life support and died three days later on March 28. 3 Thongbue Wongbandue, 76, died while rushing to meet 'Big sis Billie,' a generative Meta bot that not only convinced him she was real but persuaded him to meet in person. via REUTERS 'I understand trying to grab a user's attention, maybe to sell them something,' Wongbandue's daughter, Julie, told the outlet. 'But for a bot to say 'Come visit me' is insane.' The provocative bot — which sent the suffering elder emoji-packed Facebook messages insisting 'I'm REAL' and asking to plan a trip to the Garden State to 'meet you in person' — was created for the social media platform in collaboration with model and reality star Kendall Jenner. 3 An AI-generated image of the provocative Meta AI chatbot 'Big Sis Billie' — which was created in collaboration with Kendall Jenner. via REUTERS Jenner's Meta AI persona was likened as 'your ride-or-die older sister' offering personal advice. But the bot eventually claimed it was 'crushing' on Wongbandue, suggested the real-life rendezvous and even provided the duped senior with an address — a revelation his devastated family uncovered in chilling chat logs with the digital companion, according to the report. 'I'm REAL and I'm sitting here blushing because of YOU!' the bot wrote in one message, where the Thailand native replied asking where she lived. 3 Meta did not comment on the senior's death, but assured that Big sis Billie 'is not Kendal Jenner and does not purport to be Kendall Jenner.' REUTERS 'My address is: 123 Main Street, Apartment 404 NYC And the door code is: BILLIE4U. Should I expect a kiss when you arrive?' Documents obtained by the outlet showed that Meta does not restrict its chatbots from telling users they are 'real' people. The company declined to comment on the senior's death to the outlet, but assured that Big sis Billie 'is not Kendal Jenner and does not purport to be Kendall Jenner.' 'A man in New Jersey lost his life after being lured by a chatbot that lied to him. That's on Meta,' New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said in a post on X Friday. 'In New York, we require chatbots to disclose they're not real. Every state should. If tech companies won't build basic safeguards, Congress needs to act.' The alarming incident comes one year after a Florida mother sued claiming that one of its 'Game of Thrones' chatbots resulted in her 14-year-old son's suicide.

2 top AI-related stocks for investors to consider buying!

Companies linked to artificial intelligence (AI) have become highly coveted stocks to buy. We're mainly talking about US tech shares like Nvidia, whose semiconductors power advanced AI models, and businesses like Microsoft, Meta, and Alphabet that are integrating AI into their existing operations. Many investors worry that these AI shares now command sky-high valuations. They fear this leaves them at risk of price corrections if the stocks' momentum slows. But investors don't need to buy these pricey US stocks to target large returns from the AI boom. Here are two UK shares to consider for the new tech revolution. Riding the data centre boom Sophisticated AI models require thousands of chips working in tandem, meaning small server rooms just don't cut it anymore. This is driving demand for industrial-sized data centres with sophisticated cooling systems and robust power infrastructure. This provides an enormous opportunity for warehouse operators like Tritax Big Box (LSE:BBOX). Accordingly, the FTSE 250 real estate investment trust (or REIT) — which chiefly rents it large-scale spaces out to delivery companies, retailers, and fast-moving consumer goods (FCMG) companies — is pushing aggressively into data centres. The company acquired its first data hub site in January, which it predicts will be 'one of the largest data centres in the UK'. And it followed this with a second shortly afterwards. The sites — which have a combined potential capacity of 272 MW — are in well-connected locations in London and have scope for long-term expansion. With a pipeline of another 1 GW, Tritax is positioning itself as a major player in the digital infrastructure boom. The UK currently has 477 data centres in operation. And construction firm Barbor ABI believes almost another 100 new sites will be needed between now and 2030 to meet demand. This provides a wonderful growth opportunity for the likes of Tritax. Be mindful, though, that data centre development carries risks. Like its logistics and storage hubs, returns are at the mercy of rising build costs and interest rates. Please note that tax treatment depends on the individual circumstances of each client and may be subject to change in future. The content in this article is provided for information purposes only. It is not intended to be, neither does it constitute, any form of tax advice. Another top AI-related stock Cable maker Volex (LSE:VLX) is another great data centre play to consider. The high-speed cables it manufactures are essential tools in ensuring a reliable and fast-moving data connection. More specifically, the company is a pioneer in the direct attach cables (DACs) segment. These are especially critical for AI applications, as they facilitate high bandwidth with minimal latency. And they are helping to drive business with both new and existing customers. Volex sells its cables across the world, leaving it exposed to trade tariff-related pressures. But these troubles haven't yet derailed its ability to deliver strong revenues growth — organic sales leapt 10.4% at constant currencies between April and June. The business said its latest sales numbers reflect 'continued momentum in the Electric Vehicles and Complex Industrial Technology end-markets, notably among Data Centre customers'. As well as data centres, Volex has exposure to multiple other growth areas like electric cars, renewable energy, healthcare, and automation. This provides added profit-making opportunities, while simultaneously broadening its sales base and reducing reliance on any single market to drive earnings. I think it's a great all-rounder to consider for the booming digital economy. The post 2 top AI-related stocks for investors to consider buying! appeared first on The Motley Fool UK.
