Households which leave bins on streets in Derby to be fined
The Local Democracy Reporting Service has said wheelie bins being left on the streets has been an issue in a number of areas of Derby in recent years, including the Mackworth and New Zealand ward.Onuoha has hailed the pilot scheme a success. He said: "The number of bins being left out on these streets has reduced significantly since the start of the pilot, with enforcement action being taken against those who have continued to leave their bins out."The streets involved in the pilot have seen a reduction of up to 80% in the number of bins being left out."
'Needed on more streets'
But Mackworth and New Zealand councillor Gaurav Pandey has questioned whether the threat of fines was proving an effective deterrent after he visited streets involved in the pilot scheme and said he saw a number of bins left out. He added: "There are bins everywhere."The law has been in existence for some time so why has there been a pilot of streets involved so far? This needs rolling out across more streets in the city so more people get the message."I don't think people's behaviour will change unless enforcement is issued – that's why it is needed on more streets."

Officer jailed for sexual offence returns to prison for ‘almost identical' crime
A burglary victim who had sex with a police officer while he was on duty saved his phone number as 'Pc Predator', a judge has been told. Stuart Trentham, 41, was jailed for 18 months on Wednesday by the same judge who sent him to prison for nine months earlier this year for an 'almost identical' offence. Sheffield Crown Court heard how Trentham was a South Yorkshire Police officer who responded to a report of burglary in 2020, during the pandemic lockdown. Prosecutor Joseph Bell said the officer began to exchange increasingly 'flirtatious and sexualised' messages with the woman complainant. Mr Bell said they then had consensual sex when Trentham attended at her house. But the prosecutor said the woman 'saved his number on her mobile phone as Pc Predator'. Mr Bell said the woman's friend encouraged her to report the matter to the police at the time but she was worried about alienating her local police. He said it was only after she saw a documentary about the Metropolitan Police officer Wayne Couzens, who murdered Sarah Everard in 2021, that she decided to make a complaint. He said she was finally prompted by the publicity which surrounded Trentham's jailing for nine months in February for sending inappropriate messages to a vulnerable woman after she reported that sexual images of her had been posted on the internet without her consent in 2022. On Wednesday, Judge Jeremy Richardson KC jailed father-of-three Trentham, who appeared in court on bail, for a further 18 months. He told him: 'You abused the responsibility reposed in you. 'Police officers have a high position in society and are an essential component of a civilised country. 'The public place confidence in a police officer to do the right thing and behave with propriety. 'You betrayed that trust and you have betrayed that trust now twice.' The judge said: 'This is a grotesque breach of trust by a police officer.' He told him: 'You are a disgrace to the police force.' Judge Richardson said: 'It must be made clear that if anyone indulges as a police officer in this form of misconduct, they fall to be punished. 'There has to be an element of deterrent.' The judge said: 'Your conduct twice over in almost identical circumstances is outrageous.' Earlier, Curtis Dunkley, defending, said his client had struggled serving his prison sentence earlier this year as a former police officer, saying it was a 'living hell'. Mr Dunkley said Trentham, of Wakefield, West Yorkshire, had autism and suffered with PTSD. The defendant admitted misconduct in a public office when he appeared in court on Wednesday. He sat in the dock wearing a blue suit and with his head in his hands. Trentham resigned from South Yorkshire Police in 2023.

Labour MSP Colin Smyth charged over indecent images
Scottish Labour MSP Colin Smyth has been arrested and charged in connection with possession of indecent images, prompting his suspension from the party. The South of Scotland MSP was arrested on Tuesday and is due to appear in court at a later date. A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: "On Tuesday, August 5, 2025, officers executed a warrant at a property on Marchfield Avenue, Dumfries. 'A 52-year-old man was arrested and charged in connection with possession of indecent images. He is due to appear at Dumfries Sheriff Court at a later date." A spokesman for Scottish Labour said: "The whip has been removed from Colin Smyth MSP, pending an investigation. We cannot comment further on this matter while the investigation is ongoing.' It is understood the MSP was administratively suspended by Labour after the party became aware of the police investigation.

Former C of E vicar found guilty of indecent assault against nine women
A former vicar who ledan evangelical movement between 1986 and 1995 has been found guilty of 17 counts of indecent assault against nine women. Chris Brain, 68, appeared at Inner London crown court accused of a series of sexual offences against 13 women who were members of the Nine O'Clock Service (NOS), an influential Sheffield-based Christian worship group that was likened to a cult. He was found guilty on Wednesday of 17 counts of indecent assault during the years he led the movement. The jury cleared him of 15 counts of indecent assault but were still deliberating on four counts of indecent assault and one count of rape. Prosecutors previously told jurors that the NOS was aimed at younger people and 'presented itself to the outside world as a progressive force for good'. They said the NOS became a cult in which Brain abused his position to exert control over the lives of his female followers and ostracised them from friends and family. The court heard that a 'homebase team' was set up to 'care for' Brain – referred to as the Lycra lovelies or the Lycra nuns – and witnesses reported seeing the defendant surrounded by attractive women in lingerie at his home, looking after his needs. Prosecuting, Tim Clark KC relayed accounts to the court from complainants who said Brain groomed them and would touch them during massages. Brain denies all the charges against him. Jurors will return to court at 10am on Thursday to continue deliberations on the remaining charges.
