Fund Diversion: Temple committees demand crackdown on false claims
The demands were made during a consultation session hosted by the Department of Hindu Religious Institutions and Charitable Endowments at Kudmul Ranga Rao Town Hall on Friday. District in-charge and Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao, who presided over the meet, described the campaign of falsehoods as dangerous and politically motivated.
'These claims are often broadcast on national television and are misleading the public. Temple committees must counter these narratives with facts,' he said. Rao also highlighted that tastik payments to certified priests had been increased from ₹24,000 to ₹72,000 under the Congress government. 'The system was introduced by my father, former CM Gundu Rao, and has been consistently strengthened,' he noted. MLCs Manjunath Bhandary and Ivan D'Souza expressed concern over the misuse of temple spaces. Bhandary advocated for ID cards for B and C-grade committee members and visible notices at temples assuring donors that funds are not misappropriated.
Cultural scholar Lakshmish Gabladka stressed the need to preserve temple-based traditions in coastal Karnataka while limiting political interference. He advocated development of temples belonging to Scheduled Castes and called for recognition of poojaris as legitimate Hindu leaders.
Committee member Raghava H from Beltangady suggested reviving art forms such as Yakshagana and devotional music within temple precincts. Other speakers, including Dilraj Alva, Venkappa Gowda, and Balakrishna Gowda, recommended a fast-track mechanism for temple land disputes, funding parity, and expansion of tastik grants.
The session was attended by several dignitaries including former minister Ramanath Rai, Cashew Development Board chairperson Mamatha Gatti, MUDA chairman Sadashiva Ullal, former MLC Harish Kumar, Kannada and Tulu Academy president Sadananda Mavanje, deputy commissioner Darshan H V, ZP CEO Vinayak Karbari Narvade, and ADC Dr Santosh Kumar.
The programme began with a welcome by endowment department assistant commissioner Jayamma and an introduction by Bappanadu Temple officer Shwetha Pally.

A special court in Mumbai Thursday acquitted all the seven persons accused in the 2008 Malegaon blasts case, including former BJP MP from Bhopal, Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur. A resident of Madhya Pradesh, Pragya, 55, who started her political innings with the ABVP, the RSS' student wing, was the prime accused in the Malegaon case and the first person whom the Maharashtra anti-terrorism squad (ATS) had arrested. A Sangh Parivar firebrand, Pragya has been no stranger to controversy, who has often made news due to her various moves and statements. In December 2022, Pragya set off a major row after, referring to the murder of a Bajarang Dal activist in Shivamogga, she said at an event in Karnataka: 'Keep weapons in your homes. At least keep the knives used to cut vegetables sharp … Just like how knives cut the vegetables, it will also chop the mouth and heads.' Thakur had run into trouble with her party, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in the past over her controversial remarks. In the run-up to the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, after the party fielded her from Bhopal against Congress heavyweight Digvijaya Singh despite being booked in the Malegaon case, Pragya compared Ashok Chakra awardee and former Maharashtra ATS chief Hemant Karkare with Ravan and Kans and said he was killed during 26/11 Mumbai attacks because he was cursed for arresting her in connection with the Malegaon case. In a public meeting, Thakur said she had warned Karkare that he would be destroyed and that was exactly what happened. While she was roundly criticised at the time — the Election Commission (EC) sent her a show-cause notice — the BJP distanced itself from her remarks and claimed it had always considered Karkare a martyr. 'The BJP considers him (Karkare) a martyr. This is Sadhvi Pragya's personal statement which she might have given because of the mental and physical torture she had faced,' the party statement said. In a subsequent television interview, PM Modi alleged that the Congress had defamed a '5,000-old culture that believes in Vasudhaiv Kutumbakam'. He said, 'They called them terrorists. To answer them all, this is a symbol (fielding Thakur) and it will cost the Congress.' Following the backlash over the Karkare remarks, Thakur withdraw her statement and apologised, saying she was doing so as she felt 'the enemies of the country were being benefited from it'. A month later, Thakur triggered another political firestorm when she called Mahatma Gandhi's assassin Nathuram Godse a 'desh bhakt'. She said, 'Nathuram Godse was a patriot, is a patriot, and will remain a patriot… those who call him a terrorist should look within… they will get a reply this election.' As the party disowned the remarks, Modi also slammed Thakur. Responding to a query from the News24 TV channel, he said, 'The kind of remarks, statements made about Gandhiji and Godse is horribly wrong (bhayankar kharab). It is hateful, and these should be criticised and condemned in every which way. There is no place for such language, thinking in any civilised society. Those who do such things will have to think a hundred times in future. It's a different matter that she has apologised, I will not be able to forgive her from my heart.' As leaders such as Anantkumar Hegde and Nalin Kumar Kateel also backed Thakur, then party president Amit Shah warned there would be 'action' against the leaders who commented on Godse. 'We have decided to issue show cause notices. Once their responses come, disciplinary committee will take a decision … The entire BJP is upset, that's why prompt action has been taken. Appropriate action will be taken.' Thakur again made comments praising Godse in Parliament in November 2020. When DMK member A Raja, participating in a debate on the Special Protection Group (Amendment) Bill, cited Godse's statement on why he killed the Mahatma, Thakur interrupted and made a remark praising Godse. As the angry Opposition sought an apology from Thakur and BJP members were seen persuading her to sit down. The comment was expunged from the Lok Sabha records. As the Opposition kept up the pressure, the party dropped Thakur from a parliamentary committee. Then BJP working president JP Nadda said, 'The statement given by MP Pragya Thakur is condemnable. BJP never supports such a statement and we do not support this ideology… We have decided that she will be removed from the consultative committee on defence, and will not be allowed to participate in the parliamentary party meetings this session.' In April 2024, while stating that Pragya's absence was hampering court proceedings, a special court had directed the National Investigation Agency (NIA) to verify her health condition and submit a report. Her controversial statements on Godse are believed to have cost Pragya a repeat ticket from her Bhopal Lok Sabha seat in the 2024 elections despite the fact that she had emerged as a giant-killer in the 2019 polls by defeating Digvijaya by 3.64 lakh votes. Apart from the Godse row, BJP insiders had then said that Pragya was denied a ticket due to her lack of connect with voters and 'bad performance'. 'She refused to listen to most BJP leaders and was alienated from them. Ever since she won, she has been hardly seen in Bhopal. Her medical condition may have played a role, but her controversial statements ruined her chances,' a BJP leader had said. The BJP had replaced her in Bhopal with Alok Sharma, a loyalist of ex-Madhya Pradesh chief minister and current Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, who also won the seat. Questioned by the media on denial of ticket to her, Pragya said: 'I have never made controversial remarks. I have always told the truth. But if any word of mine hurt our Prime Minister and made him say he will never forgive me, that was never my intention. I never did it again. The Congress abused him and maligned his office (over the remarks). They pulled off a political stunt.'

Mass burial case: Govt doesn't have agenda to protect or trap anyone, says G Parameshwara
Karnataka Home Minister G. Parameshwara on Thursday said that the Congress-led government in Karnataka has no agenda to either protect or frame anyone in connection with the mass grave allegations reported from a prominent Hindu pilgrimage centre in Mangaluru district. Speaking to reporters in Bengaluru, Parameshwara said, "Why did we set up the Special Investigation Team (SIT)? As a government, we want the truth to come out, and in that context, we constituted the SIT. Once the SIT completes its investigation and submits the report, the facts of the case will be revealed. That's all we want - and that's what the public wants as well." He emphasised that there is no political motive behind the move. "There is no agenda to shield anyone or trap anyone on the part of the government. No one should view this with the wrong perception," Parameshwara appealed. "My request is simple... We have already stated that the investigation should be transparent. That is the only agenda of the government," he underlined. Commenting on the controversy surrounding SIT Chief DGP Pronab Mohanty's name being shortlisted for central deputation while the investigation into the mass grave case is progressing, Parameshwara said, "There are many misconceptions. The government had decided to appoint a DGP-rank officer to head the investigation, and in that backdrop, Pronab Mohanty was appointed as the SIT chief. Now, if his name appears on the central deputation list, no final decision has been taken yet." "The Department of Personnel and Administrative Reforms (DPAR), which functions under the Chief Minister, will decide whether to send him on central deputation. We have not made any decision yet. False posts are being circulated on this issue; this is inappropriate. What interest does the government have in this?" he asked. In response to a question, Parameshwara stated, "Until the investigation is complete and the report is submitted, we will not speak on the matter. No one should speculate. We are not driven by curiosity - we only want the truth to emerge. Until then, we won't comment further." Meanwhile, the SIT team has completed the excavation of five burial sites as of Wednesday. The team is expected to dig four more sites on Thursday. SIT Chief Mohanty is stationed in Dharmasthala to oversee the operation. He has stated that, so far, the SIT has not recovered any evidence from the burial sites during digging. On July 11, the unidentified complainant in the case, who had claimed that he was forced to bury several bodies of women who were raped and murdered in Dharmasthala village, appeared before a court in Karnataka's Mangaluru district and recorded his statement. He requested that the police exhume the bodies in his presence. He further alleged that the bodies of the women showed clear signs of sexual assault. They were found without clothes or undergarments and bore injuries, suggesting violent acts.

A special NIA court in Mumbai has acquitted all seven individuals accused in the 2008 Malegaon blast case, including former BJP MP Pragya Singh Thakur and Lieutenant Colonel Prasad Purohit, after determining that the prosecution failed to establish guilt beyond reasonable doubt. Special Judge AK Lahoti delivered the verdict seventeen years after the devastating explosion that claimed six lives and injured over 100 people in the Maharashtra town. The court emphasized that mere suspicion cannot sustain criminal proceedings and acknowledged the prosecution's inability to substantiate allegations against the defendants. The September 29, 2008 blast occurred when an explosive device attached to a motorcycle detonated in Malegaon during the holy month of Ramzan. The town's significant Muslim population made the timing particularly sensitive, leading to widespread communal tensions and the controversial emergence of the term "Hindu terror." Judge Lahoti made pointed observations about the case's moral dimensions while maintaining judicial objectivity. The court stated that terrorism transcends religious boundaries but emphasized that convictions cannot be based solely on moral considerations despite the gravity of the incident against society. The acquitted individuals include Major (retired) Ramesh Upadhyay, Sudhakar Chaturvedi, Ajay Rahirkar, Sudhakar Dhar Dwivedi alias Shankaracharya, and Sameer Kulkarni alongside Thakur and Purohit. The case initially fell under Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad jurisdiction before transferring to the National Investigation Agency in 2011. Investigators had alleged that the blast formed part of a broader conspiracy involving the Abhinav Bharat organization, purportedly seeking revenge for previous attacks on Hindus. The ATS claimed Thakur owned the motorcycle used in the explosion and that Purohit, then serving in military intelligence, facilitated explosive procurement and participated in organizational meetings. However, the court found no credible evidence supporting these claims. Regarding the motorcycle ownership, Judge Lahoti noted that forensic experts could not completely recover the chassis serial number, preventing definitive ownership establishment. The court also observed that Thakur had renounced material possessions and embraced sanyas two years before the incident. The judgment cleared Abhinav Bharat of terrorist activities, stating insufficient evidence linked the organization to terror operations. The court noted that material witnesses failed to support prosecution arguments and that conspiracy meetings could not be proven. Following the verdict, an emotional Thakur characterized the outcome as a victory for Hindutva, claiming vindication after seventeen years of legal proceedings that had devastated her life.
