The Bahrain Odia Samaj, in collaboration with ISKCON Kanoo Garden, enthusiastically celebrated the world-famous Rathayatra – the festival of unity and devotion – on Friday, June 27.
Following the sacred traditions of the Puri Rathayatra, the three divine Deities – Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Mata Subhadra – were ceremoniously brought from the ISKCON Temple, Kanoo Garden, to Adhari Park, where the grand Rathayatra festival was held.
A large number of devotees joined in pulling the chariot amidst the chanting of 'Haribol' and 'Jai Jagannath,' accompanied by the sounds of bells and drums. As per traditional custom, the President of Bahrain Odia Samaj, Shri Ramachandra Sahu, and Shri Shri Radha Gopal Krishna Temple's Yadavapati Krishnadas Prabhu and Prashant Prabhu performed the Chhera Pahanra ritual on the chariot, after which the chariot began its procession.
The Ambassador of India to the Kingdom of Bahrain, H.E. Mr. Vinod K. Jacob, graced the event as the chief guest. He addressed the large gathering of devotees about Rathayatra and commended all members of Bahrain Odia Samaj for their active participation in spreading the socio-cultural heritage of India, especially Odisha, in the Kingdom of Bahrain.
Bahrain Odia Samaj Treasurer Priyadatt Roy, Cultural Secretary Ankita Nayak, and Sports Secretary Ameresh Panda discussed Jagannath culture in the presence of devotees. General Secretary of the society Shantanu Senapati and Public Relations Secretary Amarnath Subudhi expressed that celebrating Rath Yatra abroad is a matter of great fortune for every Odia diaspora member.
A variety of Mahaprasad, including the traditional Chhappan Bhoga, was prepared and offered to the Lord on the chariot. The event was a joyous celebration for all devotees and attendees.
The festivities will continue for nine days, culminating with the Bahuda Yatra (Return Journey) on July 5.
President of the Bahrain Odia Society, Shri Ramachandra Sahu, addressed the devotees, stating that celebrating Rath Yatra in Bahrain is a testament to the play and mercy of Lord Jagannath. He thanked all members of the Odia diaspora for organizing the Rath Yatra program in a traditional manner and discussed ways to strengthen the organization and further spread Jagannath culture and tradition, as well as how to organize Rath Yatra in Bahrain every year. Finally, Joint General Secretary Shri Sarada Patnaik extended a vote of thanks to all the devotees.

Hajj package prices to soar 20% as new tent rules drive up costs

TDT | Manama Bahraini pilgrims who hoped for more affordable Hajj packages are instead confronting a steep price shock, as campaigns confirmed that 2026 packages will cost up to 20 percent more. The increase comes after last year's unexpected losses, with organisers citing higher operational expenses, particularly new requirements for tents in Arafat and Mina. Rising costs The reversal from earlier savings hopes to rising costs is striking. Campaign operators, who declined to be named, said expenses linked to new service standards had forced them to increase prices by BD200 to BD250. The adjustment translates into a 15 to 20 percent rise across most packages. A source added that the hikes are seen as necessary to prevent a repeat of last year's financial setbacks. Regulatory spotlight The Ministry of Justice, Islamic Affairs, and Endowments has already received 67 applications from Bahraini campaigns seeking approval to operate next season. A meeting between the operators and the Supreme Committee for Hajj and Umrah Affairs is expected in the coming weeks to review preparations. Dr. Ali Ameen Al-Rayyes, Director of Religious Affairs at the Ministry and Deputy Head of Bahrain's Hajj Mission, confirmed that new regulations will soon take effect. The rules will prevent campaigns from advertising packages or prices until they receive official approval. Transparency push Campaigns may still hold promotional exhibitions, but only if their content exactly matches the ministry-approved profile published online. Al-Rayyes stressed that the changes aim to build trust by ensuring pilgrims receive accurate and reliable information. The regulations will also prohibit free Hajj offers or competitions that promise packages, closing the door on misleading promotions. For pilgrims, the season ahead will bring clearer safeguards and stricter oversight, but it will also place a heavier burden on families already budgeting carefully for the spiritual journey of a lifetime.

TDT | Tokyo Four months after opening at Expo 2025 Osaka, the Bahrain Pavilion, themed 'Connecting Seas', continues to showcase the Kingdom's cultural and civilisational heritage in Japan, blending tradition with innovation and welcoming visitors from around the world. Recognised by global architectural platform ArchDaily as one of the top ten must visit pavilions, it offers an immersive journey combining sensory exhibits, architecture inspired by Bahrain's maritime history and Japanese woodworking, a café blending Bahraini and Japanese flavours, an economic showcase of the Kingdom's future, and a heritage themed gift shop. Shaikh Khalifa bin Ahmed bin Abdulla Al Khalifa, President of the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities (BACA) and Commissioner General of the pavilion, said the participation reflects Bahrain's vision to enhance its cultural and economic presence globally. He noted preparations are under way for Bahrain's National Day at the expo in September to highlight the Kingdom's maritime heritage, artistic creativity, and cultural and economic resilience. Located in the 'Empowering Lives' zone, the 995-square-metre pavilion stands four storeys high with sea views. Designed by Lina Ghotmeh, it is built mainly from wood and cooled naturally by sea breezes, making it one of the most sustainable structures at the expo. The multi sensory exhibition, curated with artists and institutions including Shepherd Studio, Sissel Tolaas, Hassan Hujairi, and La Méduse, explores themes of trade, crafts, industry, pearls, and the environment. The café, led by award winning Bahraini chef Tala Bashmi, serves seasonal menus fusing Bahraini and Japanese ingredients. Honouring Freedom in Our Community Today

TDT | Manama ' Honoring Freedom' for the Thattai Bhatia Hindu community in Bahrain means celebrating the religious tolerance, cultural preservation, and peaceful coexistence that have defined their journey for generations. Originally from Sind in undivided India (now in Pakistan), the Thattai Bhatias were among the earliest Indian expatriates in Bahrain, arriving even before oil was discovered. Deeply devout, they felt the need for a spiritual centre that would allow them to stay connected to their faith and cultural heritage. This aspiration was ful filled when the great-great-grandfather of His Majesty King Hamad Bin Isa Al Khalifa generously granted them permission to establish the Shrinathji Krishna Hindu Temple in Manama Souq—an enduring symbol of Bahrain's commitment to religious freedom. That gesture not only empowered the community spiritually but also affirmed Bahrain's ethos of inclusion and respect for diversity. Today, this temple stands not just as a place of worship, but as a living testament to the values of freedom, faith, and coexistence. It reminds the community of their roots, the welcoming spirit of Bahrain, and their own role in shaping a shared future. As the largest expatriate group in the country, Indians—particularly the Thattai Bhatias—continue to honor this freedom by upholding their traditions while contributing meaningfully to Bahraini society. Inspiring the Future Through Culture, Youth, and Unity in Bahrain Our association continues to inspire future generations in Bahrain by fostering cultural pride, social unity, and humanitarian service. Rooted in the traditions of the ancient Shrinathji Shri Krishna Temple, we actively promote Hindu culture through vibrant celebrations of major festivals such as Diwali, Holi, Janmashtami, Navratri, and more. These events not only engage the Hindu youth but also build bridges across communities, with festivals like the Color Festival (Holi) attracting participants from many nationalities and public security supporting us as a mark of mutual respect and goodwill. Beyond religious observances, we contribute to Bahrain's social fabric through sustained philanthropic initiatives. For over 30 years, quarterly blood donation camps have drawn around 600 donors annually. We also extend support during Ramadan and in times of natural calamities, ensuring assistance reaches those in need via government-recognized channels. To promote knowledge and spiritual development among youth and community members, we organize philosophical and spiritual discourses at various times during the year. We also manage cremation facilities at Askar, offering essential services with dignity to the Hindu population in Bahrain. Dignitaries and visitors from around the world visit our temple, drawn by its cultural significance and spiritual sanctity. Through these efforts, our association continues to nurture a future rooted in compassion, cultural awareness, and community unity, serving as a bridge between tradition and progress in the Kingdom of Bahrain.
