After more than 60 years, a West Side bakery will permanently close up shop
Tom Davis started working at Regina Bakery when he was a student at Oak Hills High School. During his second year of college, he decided he wanted to pursue baking as a career. He eventually became a business partner of Regina's former owner, Anton Anneken, before becoming the West Side bakery's sole owner in the 1980s. On Wednesday, Tom, along with his wife, Robin, announced they were shuttering their 61-year-old bakery – which has locations in Cheviot and Miami Heights – for good. Neither could be reached for comment, but in a Facebook post, they said both will close by the end of September. "We've explored every possibility to continue, trying to sell the bakery to operate in the same manner as it does today," the post read. "However, the time has come for us to embark on a well-deserved retirement." They also noted their Cheviot and Miami Heights stores, the latter of which includes its production facility, will be acquired by North Bend-based Java Jackets coffee house and bakery, which plans to offer some of Regina's more popular offerings, according to the post. Regina was known for its breads, as well as burger and hot dog buns, which were available at local groceries and butcher shops, and used my many restaurant owners. They are also known for their seasonal cherry bomb fritters (their take on cherry thing-a-lings from Schmidt Bakery, in Batesville), king cakes and wedding cakes. "The memories we've made here are countless," the post read. "We've watched your children become adults, and their children become customers. Our employees, many of whom have been with us for years, and even their children, are like family. We will truly miss the warmth of your smiles and the daily connections."
