Filipino Times3 days ago
Fuzion Dance Crew, a Filipino teen dance group based in the UAE, is set to compete in the Varsity Division of the World Supremacy Battlegrounds (WSB) 2025, one of the world's largest international street dance competitions.
For the first time, WSB will be held in Dubai from July 10 to 13, 2025, at The Space in Dubai Investment Park.
Fuzion Dance Crew is proudly led by Ms. Christy Angel Gelena, founder of WE ARE ONE UAE, and originally started as Kabarkidz back in 2018. The crew was built on passion and pure love for dance by Filipino teens Jewel Nugas, Jazmyn Nugas, and Ralchie Mc Andrewz Gelena, who have grown from child performers into powerhouse teen dancers.
Currently, Ralchie and Ricardo Daniel Esquivel serve as team leaders and head choreographers. The crew will be presenting an original piece crafted by themselves, highlighting their creativity, unity, and deep-rooted Filipino soul. They are also the choreographers for Bkidzzz Official, another rising team that will be representing the UAE in the Junior Division of the same competition.
Competing for Fuzion Dance Crew at WSB 2025 are: Dexter Hans Fahrer
Jana Elhendawy
Jarom Kyton Mendoza
Ricardo Daniel G. Esquivel
Zia Francheska G. Esquivel
Lois Kate Vergara
Vince Gerard Vergara
Zandrine Louise H. Claroniño
Jazmyn Gayle Nugas

Outside the competition circuit, Fuzion Dance Crew has appeared in various events and contests across the UAE, including BurJuman Rising Star, Al Ain Super Star, and several local competitions where they have won grand champion titles. They have performed on platforms such as MOTB, City Walk, and Seoul My Soul, gaining recognition in the region's youth dance scene.
Fuzion serves as a platform for young people, particularly expatriates in the UAE, to explore their creativity and cultural identity through dance.
Fuzion Dance Crew is calling for support from the wider community, including the Filipino diaspora and supporters of the performing arts in the UAE, as they prepare for the international competition.
The World Supremacy Battlegrounds is an annual global dance competition that gathers teams from around the world to showcase talent and creativity in various street dance genres. The 2025 edition in Dubai marks its first staging in the Middle East.

House resolution seeks to declare Dolphy a National Artist

A lawmaker has filed a resolution in the House of Representatives seeking to nominate the late comedy icon Rodolfo 'Dolphy' Quizon Sr. for the prestigious title of National Artist. Manila 3rd District Rep. Joel Chua filed House Resolution No. 41 on July 9, a day before Dolphy's 13th death anniversary. In the resolution, Chua cites the outstanding contributions of the Comedy King to Philippine entertainment and his role in promoting Filipino values through a decades-long career in film and television. The measure directs the House Committees on Creative Industries and Performing Arts, and on Basic Education and Culture, to conduct hearings and undertake the necessary processes to formally nominate Quizon to the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA). Dolphy is best remembered for his iconic roles in the long-running sitcoms John en Marsha and Home Along da Riles, as well as in acclaimed films such as Omeng Satanasia and Markova: Comfort Gay. Quizon died on July 10, 2012, due to multiple organ failure. He was 83. The National Artist award is the highest recognition granted by the Philippine government to individuals who have made significant contributions to the country's cultural heritage.

Thousands of Filipinos in Italy gather for Sandiwa Filitalia and Kalayaan 2025 celebration

The Filipino community in Italy gathered at Milan's Piazza Sempione to celebrate Sandiwa Filitalia, the main event of Kalayaan 2025, marking the 127th anniversary of Philippine independence and 78 years of diplomatic relations between the Philippines and Italy. Led by the Philippine Consulate General in Milan, Consul General Elmer G. Cato, and the Kalayaan 2025 Organizing Committee of the Bayanihan Council of Northern Italy, the month-long celebration brought together thousands of Filipinos at the historical Arco della Pace, featuring traditional folk dances, kundiman songs, and modern dance performances. In his speech, Consul General Cato highlighted the values of unity and bayanihan, emphasizing how these two pillars continue to guide the Filipino diaspora in Northern Italy. Food stalls also offered popular Filipino treats like halo-halo and kakanin, while families enjoyed cultural booths and exhibits showcasing Filipino traditions. Earlier on May 13, the third edition of the Kalayaan Run and Palarong Pambata kicked off, organized by Pinoy Runners Milan. Held at Parco Nord, hundreds participated in the 5K and 2.5K fun runs, while children eagerly joined traditional Filipino games. A different flavor of home was brought to Milan on June 12, as the Consulate hosted 'Mekeni, Mangan Tamu: A Taste of Pampanga,' turning the Kalayaan Hall into a culinary showcase. Two of Pampanga's finest chefs, Manuela Cherry Tan and Leonard Vincent Garcia, delighted guests with iconic Kapampangan dishes such as sisig, arobu, kare-kare, and nasing marangle, honoring Angeles City's nomination as Asia's Best Culinary City Destination at the 2025 World Culinary Awards. The celebration also featured Hiyas ng Kalayaan Ball at Palazzo Barozzi, a fashion show of traditional and modern Filipino clothing. The Sandiwa FilItalia was capped by a moving musical performance from Filipino singer Armand Curameng, whose renditions of Italian and classic OPM stirred emotions and memories of home.
