
A first in the Solar industry: US company introduces affordable panels with zero upfront costs

North Carolina-based clean energy company Palmetto is shaking up the solar market with its new 'LightReach' program, offering homeowners solar panel installation for no upfront cost.
The innovative business model allows customers to lease solar panels through affordable monthly payments, with Palmetto retaining ownership of the panels and handling installation, maintenance, and insurance.
The company guarantees customers will save money from day one.
'We're guaranteeing that the customer is going to save money when they lease with us,' said Nathan Healy, Palmetto's Vice President.
The LightReach plan includes a 90% solar production guarantee and 25-year equipment protection.
After assessing a home's solar potential through its online platform, Palmetto customizes an energy savings proposal. Once approved, the company manages the entire process—design, permits, installation, and activation—using its network of over 600 local installers.
Backed by $1.2 billion in new funding, Palmetto has removed one of the biggest barriers to solar adoption: cost. The company reported $6.4 million in customer savings in 2024, its first full year of business under this model.
CEO Chris Kemper calls Palmetto's mission 'the Apollo project of our generation,' aimed at driving mass adoption of affordable clean energy and achieving national energy independence.
Beyond financial savings, solar adoption also reduces reliance on fossil fuels.
According to the University of Michigan, residential energy use accounted for 9.2% of US carbon pollution in 2022. Solar panels offer a clean, emission-free alternative.
Palmetto's platform allows users to monitor real-time energy usage and production via its app, making clean energy both accessible and transparent.
With no-money-down leasing, guaranteed savings, and full-service support, Palmetto is positioning itself as a leader in democratizing access to renewable energy across the US.

Rupee back on the ropes after US yields spike post jobs data
MUMBAI: The Indian rupee is set to come under renewed stress on Monday after the U.S. economy added slightly more number of jobs than was expected, prompting a rise in U.S. Treasury yields and bringing relief to the dollar. The 1-month non-deliverable forward indicated a open in the 85.74-85.78 range, versus the close of 85.6250 in the previous session. The Indian currency had found respite on Friday after the Reserve Bank of India delivered a larger-than-expected rate cut while the signalling limited room for more reductions. The policy surprise lifted domestic equities and lent support to the rupee. 'The opening today is probably just a retracement of Friday's move,' a currency trader at a Mumbai-based bank said. 'With the U.S. jobs data broadly positive for the dollar, the rupee is simply coming back under pressure.' Indian rupee ends higher The trader is betting on a 85.60-86.00 range for the week with bias more-or-less neutral. US jobs surprise Employers added 139,000 jobs last month, above estimates for an increase of 130,000. Average hourly earnings increased 0.4% in May against a rise of 0.3%. The unemployment rate was unchanged at 4.2%. Federal Reserve rate cut expectations were scaled back post the data, Morgan Stanley said in its daily commentary. The market-implied rate for the December Fed meeting was re-priced 9 basis points higher, implying just 42 bps of rate cuts through 2025, it said, adding that the probability of a rate cut in July fell to 12% from 25%. The 10-year U.S. Treasury yield climbed nearly twelve bps on Friday and the dollar index rose 0.5%. The key U.S. jobs report followed a string of mostly weak data points that had raised concerns about the economic outlook. With that risk now tempered to an extent, attention turns to the pivotal U.S.-China trade talks scheduled to take place in London later in the day.

BEIJING: China soybean imports hit a record high of 13.92 million metric tons in May, customs data showed on Monday, more than double the volume imported in April, as customs clearance speeds returned to normal and the operating rate of crushing plants recovered. Imports had plunged to a 10-year low of 6.08 million metric tons in April, as prolonged customs delays and late shipments from Brazil - caused by harvest slowdowns and logistical issues - disrupted the usual cargo flow. Customs clearance speed has returned to around two weeks from 20-25 days, said Rosa Wang, an analyst from Shanghai-based agro-consultancy JCI. 'The operating rate of crushing plants has risen to over 50%, and soybean meal deliveries have also been good,' Wang said, adding that May's import volume exceeded her expectation of 12 million to 12.5 million metric tons. Imports in May were up 36.2% from 10.22 million metric tons in the same period last year, based on Reuters' calculations from customs data. Imports in the first five months of the year totalled 37.11 million tons, 0.7% lower than the year-ago period, data from the General Administration of Customs showed. Most imports come from top producer Brazil, which typically ships the bulk of its soybean crop between March and June. Brazil exported 14.10 million tons of soybeans in May, up from 13.44 million tons in the same month last year, according to government data. Chicago soybeans fall for second session on improved weather, demand worries The country's grain exporters association Anec forecast Brazil's soybean exports will reach 12.55 million metric tons in June, down from 13.83 million tons in the same month last year. In Argentina, the world's third-largest producer, soybean yields continue to track higher than expected despite slower-than-usual harvesting due to heavy rainfall affecting multiple crops, the Rosario grains exchange said last week.

China's copper concentrate imports fall 18% in May from April record
China imported 2.4 million metric tons of copper concentrate in May, customs data showed on Monday, dropping 18% from the record amount set in April even as smelters sustained output levels. Versus the same month a year earlier, imports rose 5.8%, data from the General Administration of Customs showed. Year to date, imports were up 7.4% at 12.4 million tons. The on-month fall was not surprising considering the record set in April, but the extent of decline was more than expected because smelters have not reduced output, said a Beijing-based analyst at a futures firm. Copper rallies to one-month peak on signs of improving demand Elevated prices of sulphuric acid as a by-product of smelting helped offset deeply negative Treatment and Refining Charges (TC/RC), a barometer of smelter profitability, four market sources previously said. Imports of unwrought copper and copper products fell 16.9% on year and 2.5% on month to 427,000 tons, the data showed. Year to date, imports fell 6.7% to 2.17 million tons. Unwrought copper and copper product imports into China, the world's leading copper and aluminium consumer, include copper anodes, refined copper, alloys and semi-finished products. China in May exported 547,000 tonnes of unwrought aluminium and aluminium products, including primary, alloy and semi-finished products, up 5.6% on month but down 3.2% on year. The year-to-date volume fell 5.1% to 2.43 million tonnes.
