Chimaev credits Trump for return to United States

BBC News2 days ago
Khamzat Chimaev has credited US President Donald Trump after he secured a visa which allows him to fight in America for the first time in nearly three years.Russian Chimaev's past two fights took place in Abu Dhabi, with the 31-year-old previously denying that travel issues prevented him from fighting in the US.Chimaev has ties to Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov, who is sanctioned by the US over alleged human rights abuses, including repression, torture and murder. The middleweight, who has won the first 14 fights of his career, has been pictured numerous times with Kadyrov on social media. He returns to the US for the first time since 2022 when he faces South Africa's Dricus du Plessis for the middleweight title at UFC 319 in Chicago, Illinois on 16 August."This wasn't my bad. This wasn't my fault," Chimaev said about not fighting in the United States."Everyone knows I didn't have the visa to [travel to] the US. That's why I didn't fight only once [but twice] in Abu Dhabi. So now Donald Trump is here, we go for a fight."
Trump is close friends with UFC president Dana White, who was a key supporter during his 2024 election campaign.Last month Trump said he plans to host a UFC event at the White House next year as part of America's 250th anniversary celebrations.Despite his return to the US to take on Du Plessis, Chimaev does not believe he will be invited to fight at the White House and has downplayed his interest in politics."I don't understand why they're going to put the fights over there," said Chimaev. "I'm an athlete, a sportsman - all my life I've been training. Some people put me in a position like political and break my visa down and I don't know why."I'm just doing [it] for my family - fighting, training. Athletes don't have to be with politics. I'm not connected."Du Plessis is making the third defence of his belt, while Chimaev is fighting for the first time since submitting Robert Whittaker in October.Chimaev has long been considered a future UFC champion, but inactivity and illness have stalled his career in recent years. After submitting Kevin Holland in 2022 - his last appearance in the US - Chimaev has fought just once a year, beating Kamaru Usman in 2023 before his win over Whittaker 10 months ago.

Emma Raducanu vs Olga Danilovic: Score and latest Cincinnati Open updates

Good evening and welcome to second-round coverage of Emma Raducanu versus Olga Danilovic at the Cincinnati Open. Raducanu made a run to the third round in Montreal last week, picking up good straight-set wins over Elena-Gabriela Ruse in round one and 32nd-seeded American Peyton Stearns in round two. Wimbledon finalist Amanda Anisimova, world No 7, ended the Briton's run at the WTA 1000 event. The British No 1, who recently confirmed the appointment of new coach Francis Roig for the remainder of the season, is making her second appearance at the Cincinnati Open and first in three years. Seeded 10th and ranked 13th in the world in the 2022 edition, Raducanu beat Serena Williams and Victoria Azarenka before losing to Jessica Pegula in the round of 16. Our tennis correspondent Simon Briggs describes the appointment of Roig, who was part of Rafael Nadal's coaching team for 17 years, as a statement of intent and believes it should be a good fit for the Briton. 'If Raducanu wants to return to the top 20 or even the top 10, she must learn to last the course better. She needs to add more endurance and stoicism to her all-round package – and who better to aid her in that than a long-term Nadal collaborator?,' writes Briggs. Read more here. Unlike Raducanu, who started in Washington, Danilovic got her North American hard-court campaign under way last week in Canada. The 24-year-old Serbian, playing her first match since a second-round exit at Wimbledon, lost in straight sets to Veronika Kudermetova in Montreal. Katie Boulter felt the force of Danilovic in the first round here. The lefty saw off the British No 2 in straight sets – 6-0, 7-5. Danilovic has a 20-13 record in 2025, Raducanu is at 23-16. This is the first time the two have played each other on the main tour.

MLB's first EVER female umpire takes to the field in historic moment... and fans make their feelings VERY clear

Jen Pawol has made history as the first woman to umpire a regular-season game in baseball's major leagues. Pawol's much-anticipated debut came as the first-base umpire for Saturday's first game of a split doubleheader between the Atlanta Braves and Miami Marlins, and fans quickly made their feelings clear in the stands. She received a rousing reception, and multiple supporters had even handmade signs to show their support, with one reading: 'Thank you Jen, from girls and women everywhere.' Another noted: 'We r all dreamers! Go Jen!' She enjoyed a quiet first inning, watching as Braves right-hander Hurston Waldrep struck out the first two batters before Agustin Ramirez lined out to third baseman Nacho Alvarez Jr. The Braves also were set down in order by Miami right-hander Ryan Gusto in the bottom of the first inning, with no calls from Pawol needed at first base. As the first-base umpire, Pawol's responsibility was to check Waldrep's hands for foreign substances following the inning. During that brief encounter, she also appeared to receive a warm greeting from Braves catcher Sean Murphy on his way to the dugout. Pawol's first real test came in the third inning when she called Murphy safe on a close play. Replays indicated Murphy may have been out, but Marlins manager Clayton McCullough did not challenge the call. Later in the inning, she made an animated call on Miami's Xavier Edwards when he grounded into a double play, Pawol pumped her fist and lifted her leg when she called Edwards out at the first base bag. Pawol couldn't help but notice her debut was being watched closely. Fans responded with a warm ovation when the video board focused on the umpire between innings, forcing her to take a quick glance at her image. Hurston Waldrep is checked for foreign materials by Pawol before heading to the mound Pawol will work third base in Saturday night's second game of the doubleheader. She will be in the spotlight when she calls pitches behind the plate in Sunday's final game of the series. There was much anticipation for her historic debut Saturday. A crowd of photographers gathered while waiting for the umpires to walk onto the field from their entry ramp near the Marlins' dugout. Marlins manager Clayton McCullough and Braves bench coach Walt Weiss greeted Pawol when lineups were exchanged at home plate before the game. Pawol then jogged down the first-base line. She shook hands with Marlins first-base coach Tyler Smarslok before taking her position on the right-field line for the first pitch. Pawol said Thursday that she was 'overcome with emotion' when notified she would make her Major League Baseball debut this weekend. 'It was super emotional to finally be living that phone call that I'd been hoping for and working towards for quite a while, and I just felt super full. I feel like a fully charged battery ready to go,' Pawol said. Pawol, 48, has been working in the minor leagues since she was assigned to the Gulf Coast League in 2016. She was assigned the Triple-A championship game in 2023 and worked spring training games in 2024 and again this year. Pawol, who is from New Jersey, had only a few days to prepare for Saturday's doubleheader. She said she was told of her long-awaited promotion during a Wednesday conference call with director of umpire development Rich Rieker and vice president of umpire operations Matt McKendry. She was a three-time all-conference softball selection at Hofstra and worked as an NCAA softball umpire from 2010 to 2016. Pawol's rise to MLB history came 28 years after the gender barrier for NBA game officials was broken and 10 years after the NFL hired its first woman as a full-time official. The men's soccer World Cup first hired a woman to referee three years ago. The NHL has not had any women as on-ice officials.
