Navigating a cost of living crisis in a world where we can tap and spend without a thought is changing the way we manage our personal finances. Whether asking our boss for a pay rise or negotiating splitting the bill with friends, we have to confront our discomfort about discussing money. But the emotional stakes can feel precarious. So how do we navigate this new money etiquette?
You might not be ready to share your credit score on your dating app profile, but don't be afraid to set out your financial boundaries.
The cost of living has made people more understanding, according to Dr Caroline West, a sex and relationship expert for the dating app Bumble. 'It's totally normal to stress over the financial side of dating, like who pays for what, or whether to split things 50/50. These debates aren't disappearing any time soon, but my advice is to always be upfront with yourself about your expectations and limits, and make sure to communicate them.'
According to Bumble's stats, more people are choosing alcohol-free 'dry dating' and low-cost, low-pressure first meetings. Almost a third of 18- to 34-year-olds say they'd suggest something like a walk for a first date. Gen Z are also much more comfortable bringing up money that early, with only around one in 10 UK singles aged 18 to 34 saying they would never do it, compared with a quarter of 45- to 54-year-olds.
Running a household on one salary is less viable than it used to be. Romantic couples, married or cohabiting, need to find a way to blend incomes that feels fair. This goes for anyone working out how to divide the bills with platonic housemates or family members, too. A joint account can help. You can open one with one other person, and sometimes two or three, but it gives all account holders equal rights to withdraw money or run up debts, so you need trust. It also links your credit files, which means you should have an understanding of each other's financial mistakes to protect your own ability to borrow money in the future.
Can you afford to ignore who had a starter and a pudding? Or if you're a teetotal vegetarian, are you paying for everyone else's steak and malbec? And how do you divide up the dreaded group holiday supermarket shop?
Apps such as Splitwise have increasingly become the answer, doing the painful work of asking friends for money on your behalf. You add a group expense, everyone pitches in with what they have laid out for, and you can send a request to 'settle up'.
Others agree on a budget before the event and put someone in charge of a kitty. PayPal has a new pooling feature, where you can create a tab on your account and share the link with friends and family via email or WhatsApp. They contribute directly using the link, and when the kitty reaches its target you can transfer it all to your PayPal balance and into your bank account. That way you become the nominated 'banker'. This is good for group holidays.
It's one way to avoid what Alex Holder, author of the book Open Up: How to Talk About Money, has coined 'the mate wait': 'the undetermined amount of time one spends waiting to be reimbursed by another person for shared expenses'; see also, the 'mate weight' – the emotional burden of debating whether the £4 coffee is worth mentioning again.
Haggling may feel horrifying to many British people, but it is now widespread. The areas in which you're most likely to be successful are with subscription services and household bills, big-ticket items that are already on sale, insurance and breakdown cover, and also independent businesses and preloved shopping.
Luckily for the more reserved among us, you can also haggle via online chat. 'It's becoming more acceptable to give it a go,' says Molly Mileham‑Chappell, consumer expert at website TopCashback. Secondhand selling app Vinted even has a 'make an offer' button, and many items on eBay do too.
If it's a subscription service, you might state you are unhappy with the renewal price and considering leaving. Or if it's a one-off purchase, you might say you narrowly missed a promotion on the product.
'If a lower price isn't an option, ask nicely if there's anything else they can do. They may throw in perks like free shipping, upgrades, or generate a discount code. Consider starting a chat at the end of the day, or closer to the end of a retailer's sales period when they may be keen to hit targets and bend a little,' says Mileham-Chappell. 'Always have a 'get out' phrase up your sleeve too, in case you need to think on it: ''I've got to pick up the children from school now, can I come back to you later?''
Many employers discourage their employees from discussing salaries, but they have no legal right to do so, and this is being frowned upon as a way of cementing inequality in the workplace, so go ahead, says Daniel Zhao, lead economist at the workplace community Glassdoor. Its salary negotiations section has insights into how others are managing these conversations in their own offices.
'Pay transparency is an important tool for workers to ensure they are being paid what they deserve, and has the potential to mitigate pay inequities by revealing gaps that might otherwise have hidden in the shadows,' says Zhao.
He does, however, warn people to try not to take discussions about pay at work too personally. 'A colleague may be paid more because they have responsibilities or experience you aren't aware of. The most common mistake when asking for a raise is simply saying that your colleague makes more than you as your argument. Pay transparency is good to help you benchmark what you can ask for, but it alone cannot make the argument.'
Many of coach Bryony Williams' clients come to her specifically wanting to work on asking for a pay rise. The founder of consultancy The Glass Female says three themes tend to reveal themselves. 'Clients think someone else is getting more and feel undervalued where they are; they're not happy at work and they see financial compensation as the plaster to make them happy again; or they're under financial strain and the desire for a raise comes from external pressure.'
She says that she encourages clients to do their homework on how much is reasonable to ask for – websites such as Glassdoor and Payscale can help.
Consider your experience and location – and, crucially, be honest with yourself. What is driving your desire for more money? Is it your personal financial circumstances, a goal, a debt you wish to pay off, or is it simply appropriate for your level, experience and leadership? There's a difference, and the latter needs to be the case for your request to be successful.
'If you can reframe money as maintenance and remove the emotion, it is easier to be confident. We often feel we want more money because we desire validation or recognition for our efforts. There are opportunities to satisfy those needs with our own positive affirmation, a rewarding conversation with a manager or even great feedback.'

In the UK, tips have traditionally been seen as a way of recognising someone going above and beyond, but the US approach of adding service to top up wages started to take hold during the pandemic, when customers were keen to support low-paid workers. Should you still tip everyone that prompts you? Adrian Harris, founder of thankU Cashless Tipping, an app that lets you leave a tip with your phone, believes there's a difference between adding 50p on to the cost of a flat white that you've queued for and collected from the counter, and giving cash to the colourist in a salon who spends three hours doing your highlights. In the hairdressing world, £10, £15 or £20 is, he says, 'very normal'.
Caroline Larissey, chief executive at the National Hair and Beauty Federation, says typical tips range from 5% to 20% of the cost. 'Some clients tip assistants who wash their hair, others tip their stylist, and some tip both. Your hairdresser understands that tipping is optional and won't be offended if you don't.'
If there is a particular person you wish to tip, ask them how they would like to receive it (either in cash or via an app, for example).
Under UK legislation introduced in 2024, 100% of money left, including service charges on bills, must go to the staff, but each venue can decide how it should be distributed.
'A cash tip will allow them to keep it themselves,' says Kate Nicholls, chief executive of UKHospitality. 'Leaving a tip on the bill or behind on the table will benefit the whole team, from front-of-house to chefs and kitchen porters working hard in the kitchen.'
If you can't afford to tip, Larissey suggests you leave a positive review online instead.
A recent study published in the Journal for Consumer Psychology found that people who lend money to friends frequently feel they deserve oversight on the cash and how the borrower spends it. Alarmingly, this judgment persists even after the loan has been repaid. Work hard to avoid this, says Keith Barber, director of business development at the Family Building Society, particularly if you are, as is now so common, helping adult children on to the property ladder or with expenses such as childcare or fertility treatment.
'You've got to be very clear about the terms on which the money comes over. But I think that's at the end of the conversation, rather than the beginning. You need to start with: what are your children's goals? What are their ambitions? What do they want to do?'
The idea is to really listen to why they need the money, rather than impose on them what you think the money should be for, and therefore how much they need.
'If you're willing to help, you've got to also be willing to let go of that money, assuming you can afford to give it rather than loan it.' And if you are helping with a property deposit so your children can get a mortgage, most banks will want to see in writing that the money is a gift with no strings attached.
Lending and borrowing between friends and siblings is becoming more common, too. Barber has seen cases where one sibling is better placed financially and wanting to help another buy a property. In this situation, the same rules of not expecting oversight should apply.
Drawing up a written loan agreement is a helpful way to ensure there isn't any miscommunication. State how much is being loaned, for how long, what it is for, whether any interest is due and any other terms you feel are important to note, such as what happens if your loved one can't pay on time. If it's a small amount, you could do this informally between you. But you may want to seek legal advice if it's tens of thousands of pounds.
Tara Edwards, a private client executive for Wellers Law Group, says agreements in writing are also important when it comes to how you want to leave an inheritance. This helps avoid any misunderstandings that could have legal implications. For example, not understanding someone's motivation could result in a claim on your estate, as well as heartache.
Joanna Harrison, couples therapist and author of Five Arguments All Couples (Need To) Have and Why the Washing-Up Matters, says discussing money anxieties could throw up a lot of shame. 'One person might want to protect their partner by not bringing it up. How do you make it not feel intrusive? How do you not make someone feel defensive?
'I think a helpful way is not 'Can you give me a form with all your money details,' but to be really curious with each other about what your attitudes to money are.' For example, what did your partner or friend grow up with? What were their experiences of money as a child? This can tease out whether someone may be afraid of getting into debt, or why they might feel it is important to have their own private bank account.
She suggests you have a conversation about having the conversation. ''How would you feel about us being transparent with our finances?' is a very different way of starting off a conversation than saying, 'I want you to be transparent.''

The fintech world is entering a new era where AI can do more than chat or make recommendations – it can act. In this 'agentic' age of commerce, autonomous AI agents are increasingly capable of making purchases, managing finances, and executing transactions on behalf of users without direct human intervention. What began as experimental chatbots has rapidly evolved into full-fledged agentic AI systems with 'advanced human-like reasoning and interaction capabilities' that are 'transforming the finance and retail sectors' among others. In just the past few months, major payment networks, fintech giants, and startups alike have unveiled tools to empower these AI agents to shop, pay, and transact in the real world. This deep dive explores how the concept of agentic AI emerged in payments and commerce, what key solutions are being built – from PayPal's Agent Toolkit to Visa's Intelligent Commerce – and what it all means for consumers, merchants, and the broader fintech ecosystem. The significance of this shift is hard to overstate. Some compare it to the leap from physical stores to e-commerce, or from web shopping to mobile. As Visa's Chief Product and Strategy Officer Jack Forestell put it, 'Just like the shift from physical shopping to online, and from online to mobile, Visa is setting a new standard for a new era of commerce' with AI agents. The idea is that soon millions of consumers will trust AI assistants to not only find the perfect product or best deal, but also buy it for them – all while handling payments seamlessly in the background. According to Forestell, 'Soon people will have AI agents browse, select, purchase and manage on their behalf. These agents will need to be trusted with payments, not only by users, but by banks and sellers as well'. In other words, the race is on to build the trust, infrastructure, and standards that will let AI-driven commerce flourish safely. This isn't just hype from incumbents. A wave of startups and developers is also charging into the agentic payments gold rush. In late 2024 and early 2025, 'a surge of launches by startups [aimed] to capitalize on the new AI agent economy' has been evident. Fintech innovators see an opportunity to remove friction from transactions by letting AI do the heavy lifting. But they also recognize huge challenges around security, identity, and fraud when algorithmic agents start handling money. Are we really ready to let AI agents loose on our wallets? This article will delve into how the industry is addressing those questions and reimagining commerce itself – from autonomous shopping assistants to AI-powered back-office bots – all through the lens of factual developments and solutions that have emerged in the past year. The Rise of Agentic AI in Commerce Not long ago, 'autonomous AI agents' sounded like science fiction. Yet the rapid advances in generative AI (GenAI) and large language models over 2023–2024 have made it possible for software bots to carry out complex tasks with minimal supervision. Instead of just answering questions, AI can now be agentic – capable of making decisions and taking actions to achieve specific goals. In practical terms, an agentic AI might not only recommend a product but actually place an order, or not only flag a fraudulent transaction but automatically shut down the affected account. The concept took center stage as companies like OpenAI released frameworks for AI agents that can use tools and APIs. This opened the door for integrating payment capabilities directly into AI workflows. Financial services quickly became fertile ground for these innovations. According to a PwC executive playbook, 'multimodal GenAI agentic frameworks have emerged as transformative catalysts, enabling businesses to accelerate process automation at an unprecedented scale', with finance and retail among the sectors already seeing impact. Early experiments had AI agents assist with things like investment research, loan document analysis, and customer support. By late 2024, attention turned to payments and commerce – arguably the next frontier for agentic AI. After all, shopping and financial transactions involve myriad routine decisions and steps (searching for products, comparing options, entering payment details, etc.) that an AI could potentially handle faster and more efficiently than a human. Crucially, the infrastructure to support such autonomy was starting to fall into place. Payment APIs have proliferated, digital wallets and tokenization are widespread, and e-commerce is API-driven – all of which make it easier to plug an AI agent into the commerce loop. In October 2024, industry observers like Sardine noted that 'AI agents are the hottest trend in banking right now, offering massive productivity gains by automating complex tasks and making decisions at lightning speed – tasks that once required human oversight'. However, as Sardine's Head of Strategy Ravi Loganathan cautioned, this promise comes with challenges: 'How do you know the AI agent is operating within your consent? How do you link each payment back to a verified identity? How do we prevent fraud against the agents or prevent the agents from committing fraud?'. These questions underscored the need for new frameworks and safeguards before handing the keys (and the credit cards) to AI. By early 2025, the concept of agentic commerce had moved from theory to reality. In April and May 2025, a flurry of announcements from top payments companies signaled that autonomous shopping and payments are officially here. Mastercard unveiled its Agent Pay initiative; Visa introduced Intelligent Commerce; PayPal, Stripe, and Coinbase each launched toolkits for AI agent transactions; and startups like PayOS came out of stealth to tie everything together. Each of these efforts contributes a piece to the emerging ecosystem of agent-enabled commerce. Let's examine these key products and solutions driving the agentic AI revolution in payments.

Online 'ghost stores' falsely claiming to be Australian businesses are providing fake tracking numbers to convince payment platforms they have delivered goods that have never been sent, a disappointed shopper says. Ghost stores are online businesses that only exist in a digital sense and do not have a physical storefront. Guardian Australia has tracked 140 such stores masquerading as local businesses, which include those selling poor quality clothing and counterfeit labels, while others take customers' money and fail to deliver anything at all. Sign up for Guardian Australia's breaking news email A 63-year-old Geelong woman, who asked not to be identified, said she had a 'distressing' and 'disappointing' experience seeking a refund from PayPal after trying to buy items from the Maison Canberra website in April. She said she had been duped by fictitious advertising on Facebook portraying it as a Canberra-based boutique having a sale after making the difficult decision to close. Her clothing and shoe orders never arrived. The customer said the seller had repeatedly submitted false evidence to PayPal of deliveries, and she believed the payment platform was siding with the business despite her 'efforts to provide clear and legitimate proof to the contrary'. Maison Canberra was built using Shopify, a Canadian multinational e-commerce platform. Neither Maison Canberra nor Shopify has responded to Guardian Australia's repeated requests for comment. On 31 March Guardian Australia bought a blouse for $69.95 from Maison Canberra. The site sent an email on 1 April saying the item had been shipped but it was never delivered. The site has since been taken down. The Geelong woman spent $490.90 on two orders of clothing and shoes. After seeing she had been charged international transaction fees of $17.18, researching the site and realising she had potentially been scammed, she lodged a dispute with PayPal requesting a refund. She said she had included 'extensive documentation' including evidence of what she believed were 'fake' tracking numbers. In two separate emails seen by Guardian Australia, Maison Canberra claimed her orders were 'on the way' but sent tracking numbers beginning with 'UK'. Australia Post declined to comment on whether they were valid. Guardian Australia looked up the tracking numbers on three third-party parcel-tracking platforms, all of which said the orders had been processed by a logistics company in China but had not progressed any further. Consumer experts have said Shopify and Meta need to take more responsibility for enabling these sites and allowing them to run false advertising but that payment platforms including PayPal also play a role by allowing these sites to use their services. The Geelong customer said PayPal had denied her claim on 29 April and told her tracking information provided by the seller showed that the items had been delivered. But she said she hadn't receive a refund until 26 May, the day after she told PayPal she would escalate the issue to the Australian Financial Complaints Authority. She said PayPal maintained she had received items from the seller and that her refund had only been granted because they were 'not as described'. The customer said she was 'appalled by this misrepresentation'. 'I strongly believe consumers deserve better protection, and someone must be held accountable,' she said. 'It's so distressing and so disappointing and frustrating.' She said PayPal should have a dedicated fraud or scam category in its claims process to help scam victims seeking redress. PayPal previously said all Australian sellers were verified when applying for an account, before conceding that this may not be the case for online sellers based in countries with different laws and regulations. A PayPal spokesperson said the safety and security of customers was its 'top priority' and it invested 'significant resources' into protecting them. 'Under PayPal's buyer protection policy, we will refund the full purchase price plus the original shipping charges for eligible claims,' they said. The Australian Financial Complaints Authority declined to comment, saying it could not disclose information about individual complaints. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, which has previously said it is investigating ghost stores, declined to comment.

Tech-Driven BNPL: How Sophisticated Technologies Are Reshaping the BNPL Market: By Bekhzod Botirov

Bekhzod Botirov, fintech expert, co-owner and member of the PayWay Supervisory Board, outlines how new technologies are reshaping the global BNPL market from reducing risks and improving customer services to refining operations and providing increasingly sophisticated offerings. By 2028, the number of users of BNPL services (Buy Now, Pay Later) is predicted to double to 670 million, an explosive 107% growth compared to 2024. However, as the industry flourishes, so inevitably do the risks ranging from fraud to late payments. To address these issues, international leaders such as Klarna, Afterpay, PayPal, and Affirm are already using artificial intelligence (AI) and big data to minimise their losses and at the same time personalize services for customers and increase sales. Affirm has introduced dynamic payment schedules in the US, while Riverty in Germany uses AI-driven tools to predict user behavior and optimize repayment plans. Afterpay is using big data and AI to ensure a smooth user experience and improved risk management. PayPal's BNPL solution, Pay in 4, incorporates sophisticated fraud prevention technology and machine learning models to assess creditworthiness quickly. Among other things, Sezzle is using machine learning for customer risk assessment and to offer tailored financing options. These, and other BNPL firms are demonstrating how technology, including machine learning, AI and predictive analytics are being used to make services faster, more secure, and more personalized for consumers. However, the wider context is competitive pressures, regulatory demands, and new standards, all of which are pushing providers to improve credit assessment capabilities. As BNPL companies incorporate technologies to meet improved credit assessment objectives they're also discovering further advantages such as improved fraud detection, flexible, transparent payment options, interest-free payment plans, reduced risk of late payments and so on. And with market growth firmly on an upward trajectory BNPL's early adopters are gaining material and market advantage. In a recent report ResearchandMarkets says the BNPL payment market is expected to grow by 13.7% on an annual basis to reach US$560.1 billion in 2025. Further the global market is forecast to grow at a CAGR of 10.2% during 2025-2030 and by the end of 2030 is expected to be worth approximately USD 911.8 billion. There are also further potential technology driven benefits that may not be immediately obvious. For instance, if technology is used to establish information sharing across BNPL players, all companies will be able to see if a borrower has installment plans with other BNPL companies, making the market more transparent and significantly reducing defaults. The growth of BNPL is directly tied to advancements in digital payment technologies, making them an inseparable part of the market's future, so at the very least awareness of the potential of new technologies is incumbent on all players as the market continues to evolve. AI powerfully improves operations from scoring to personalisation AI is having a dramatic impact on the BNPL market. AI-powered credit systems reduce default rates and improve customer satisfaction. Providers that excel in data-driven decision-making will strengthen their market leadership with in-depth analysis of customers' financial behaviour such as what they spend money on, what they invest in, how often they take out loans or request a credit history. Tied to AI are neural networks which can, among other things, also assess a user's social media behaviour to provide ever deeper insight into 'credit worthiness'. AI algorithms can even consider macroeconomic factors like rising unemployment in different regions. AI can also help predict the probability of defaults by detecting patterns that indicate possible financial difficulties such as unstable payments on other instalment plans. It can also help improve customer experience and reduce employee workload and service costs. For instance, AI assistants can carry out the initial processing of customer requests, automate the collection of debts and send borrowers reminders about payments as well as updating customer information. AI can also help personalise offers for users and increase conversions. If, for example, a borrower is making payments on time, customised repayment schedules or raised borrower limits can be offered. It's also possible to predict which product instalment will be the most relevant for the customer. If a consumer bought a PlayStation several years ago, a trade-in programme can offer a new model. For fraud prevention, neural networks can identify anomalies such as a customer applying for a new line of credit from a location that is different to the usual location. Machine learning models can identify high-risk borrowers, fraudulent activities, and outlier behavior. BNPL market leaders are already actively using AI. Klarna and Riverty have implemented machine learning models to offer personalised payment schedules and identify high-risk borrowers. Klarna has also partnered with OpenAI to launch an AI assistant. In its first month alone, it had 2.3 million conversations with customers, two-thirds of all dialogues. The company claims that the bot does the work of seven hundred full-time employees. But AI isn't the preserve of international market leaders. Alif, an Uzbek company, has developed a machine learning based credit scoring model that reduces the time to make decisions on applications to seconds, reduces the percentage of delinquencies and increases the sales of goods in instalments. Alif has also introduced a chatbot that handles thousands of consumer queries across different communication channels, far faster than people could. Blockchain, a new world of transparency and financing models The use of blockchain technology is still in its early stages, but it holds significant potential to transform various aspects of BNPL operations, from improved transparency and trust to regulatory compliance. For instance, it eliminates the manipulation of records of payments, debts, and transaction terms, as each transaction is recorded in a distributed ledger. Blockchain also allows many processes to be automated through smart contracts. These digital agreements are honoured automatically when conditions are met. As an example, if a customer is severely late with a payment, a smart contract can activate sanctions. BNPL platforms can also use smart contracts that automatically analyse a user's wallet and provide a score based on machine learning algorithms. The analysis considers the transaction history in the blockchain such as cryptocurrency payments and activity on DeFi platforms. With the help of blockchain, BNPL services will also be able to raise finance. Tokenised assets backed by receivables can be issued. Investors will buy them on secondary markets, increasing the liquidity of BNPL providers. And cryptocurrencies can facilitate cross-border transfers and help companies receive capital from investors around the world without the complexities of currency regulation. That said, the risks of using unstable cryptocurrencies, such as Bitcoin, needs to be noted. Fluctuations in value can affect the size of the debt. The solution in this case could be stablecoins, the rate of which is linked to other assets. Nexo, a large international company, uses this method to save crypto assets, pay with them and take loans. Nexo claims that the volume of transactions and loans issued on the platform has already exceeded $320 billion. In order to develop the market, government agencies need to develop a legal status for BNPL players on the blockchain. But it's important to note its early days for blockchain. There are not many specialists who know how to develop blockchain systems, even in the global market. For instance, international BNPL services are still looking at the technology. Klarna only announced in February of this year that it was exploring options for integrating cryptocurrencies into its platform. While blockchain offers enormous potential today blockchain adoption is more complicated than AI. A number of regulatory and infrastructural issues need to be resolved to develop the technology. The most realistic scenario today is the development of hybrid BNPL services. In this case, the currency familiar to the population, and blockchain technologies, can be used to record and automate payments. But for this purpose it is still necessary to create a local platform supporting smart contracts for BNPL. Road to the future is lined with superapps and cards In Asia-Pacific, BNPL adoption is heavily influenced by integration with super apps like Grab, Gojek, and WeChat. These platforms offer instalment plans across various services, from ride-hailing to food delivery, providing users with a single app to access myriad services. Superapps serve millions of users daily, so it makes absolute sense for BNPL providers to use these platforms to gain instant access to a vast, engaged audience. It also makes sense for the superapp platform. By embedding BNPL, these apps increase user engagement and transaction volume across multiple services. For instance, Grab PayLater provides BNPL services to millions of Grab users for rides, food delivery, and online shopping. The Paytm Postpaid superapp in India uses Paytm's transaction data to determine BNPL eligibility. And in China, Alipay and WeChat Pay offer BNPL options that allows users to split payments across thousands of merchants. BNPL providers can offer personalized credit limits, reduce default risks with better scoring models and provide custom BNPL plans based on user history. BNPL services integrated into superapps also allow providers to provide instant checkout options, loyalty programs and cashback offers and embedded financing across multiple services. International BNPL leaders such as Klarna, Affirm and Afterpay, in partnership with commercial banks, marketplaces, e-commerce shops and large retail chains, also offer debit cards to users. They can be used, among other things, to buy goods in instalments. However, there is certainly potential to offer even more services such as providing points for on-time instalment payments, which consumers can spend on real goods. Looking further ahead, banks, including microfinance banks, could cooperate with specialised BNPL services and issue debit cards on a white label model. Of course, this approach would require adherence to regulation and would probably require licences from BNPL-providers. Superapps are reshaping the BNPL landscape by embedding BNPL into everyday digital experiences. Their massive user bases and data insights make them 'goldmine' partners for BNPL providers. At the same time cards have a bright future in some territories, and while already in widespread adoption there is certainly room for added services that refine BNPL offerings.
