Tripura CM reiterates a zero-tolerance stand to drug trafficking
Agartala, June 25 (UNI) Tripura Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha on Wednesday reiterated his zero-tolerance stand against drug traffickers as central and state governments took a firm stance against drugs.
He said that drug seizures in Tripura have increased by 104% from 2023–24 to 2024–25, while drug destruction has seen a rise of 132%. Police, security forces, and other concerned agencies are actively working against drug trafficking.
He urged cross sections of society to unite and fight against the drug menace while addressing a motorcycle rally on the occasion of the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking as part of Drug-Free India campaign.
The United Nations declared this day as International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking in 1987 to prevent drug abuse and raise awareness about illegal drugs. Tripura is geographically surrounded by international borders on three sides and shares boundaries with Assam and Mizoram, which makes the state prone to a drug smuggling network.
'Tripura's children are being targeted, and the state is being used as a corridor to traffic drugs into Bangladesh. Today's slogan—'Say No to Drugs'—is extremely important. Drug traffickers are smuggling drugs for money, and our children are falling prey to it. But it is not their fault. When it comes to Tripura, they become victims. These victims are in dire need of treatment,' he said.
Dr Saha added that for this purpose, the state government decided in the last budget to open drug de-addiction centers in all eight districts. About Rs 20 crore has been allocated for each center, and an additional Rs 198 crore has been sanctioned by DoNER to set up a larger drug de-addiction center in Tripura.
It has been observed that those who use injectable drugs are mostly affected by HIV/AIDS.

CM flags off e-scooters to boost HIV and health outreach in Himachal
Shimla, 25 June (UNI) Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu today flagged off 12 e-scooters from his official residence, Oak Over, here. These scooters, provided to the Health Department through the Himachal Pradesh State AIDS Control Society, will be deployed across eight districts of the state to strengthen doorstep medical services. This first-of-its-kind initiative in Himachal aims to ensure uninterrupted delivery of healthcare services—such as medicine distribution, screening, and counseling—to patients suffering from HIV, Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs), Tuberculosis (TB), and Hepatitis. The programme seeks to improve treatment adherence and support viral load suppression among patients, ultimately enabling them to lead healthier, longer lives. Commending the initiative, the Chief Minister said, 'Red Ribbon Clubs, youth, educational institutions, and NGOs have played a crucial role in raising awareness about HIV. "Making Himachal Pradesh HIV-free is our shared responsibility. I am confident that these e-scooters will further strengthen our outreach and support mechanisms,' he said. He further said that over 6,000 people in the state are currently living with HIV, most of whom have achieved viral load suppression—a reflection of the government's sustained efforts and effective policies. The Chief Minister also emphasised that the promotion of electric vehicles in the state is aligned with the government's commitment to environmental conservation, and the deployment of e-scooters for health services is a step forward in this direction. Health and Family Welfare Minister Dr. (Col.) Dhani Ram Shandil added that the State AIDS Control Society is actively working through 471 Red Ribbon Clubs in universities, colleges, and industrial training institutes across the state. "The Adolescent Education Programme is also being implemented in schools. Additionally, the Department of Youth Services and Sports and Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan are collaborating to spread awareness about HIV among out-of-school youth," he said. UNI XC SSP

Rs 938 crore lost to cybercrooks since Jan
Bengaluru: As the financial landscape races ahead in its digital journey, a chilling new report warns of the dark flipside: Artificial intelligence (AI) rapidly emerging as the most-dangerous weapon in the cybercriminal's arsenal. In the first five months this year, Rs 938 crore was lost to cybercriminals across the state and a whopping 6,000 cases were registered. Data collated by state police shows cybercrooks made away with Rs 2,396 crore in 2024, Rs 562 crore in 2023 and Rs 113 crore in 2022. The state is seeing over 22,000 cybercrime cases per year. What is interesting is that a majority of them have been committed by deploying AI tools. "Cybercrimes are increasingly penetrating society, targeting even vulnerable senior citizens. Awareness must be created to educate society about the emerging threats," said DG&IGP MA Saleem after releasing "The State of AI-Powered Cybercrime: Threat & Mitigation Report-2025'. The report highlights how cybercriminals are leveraging AI to craft phishing emails, clone websites and even spin up deepfake-driven scams. AI tools were involved in 80% of phishing mails, which, in other words, means that they were deployed in 8 out of every 10 phishing campaigns. "AI is transforming the cybercrime landscape, enabling attackers to execute faster, targeted and personalised attacks like never before," the report warned. "This report is a wake-up call. It doesn't just document cyber threats, it reveals the human cost behind them," said Jay Vijayan, founder and CEO of Tekion.
