CM flags off e-scooters to boost HIV and health outreach in Himachal
Shimla, 25 June (UNI) Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu today flagged off 12 e-scooters from his official residence, Oak Over, here.
These scooters, provided to the Health Department through the Himachal Pradesh State AIDS Control Society, will be deployed across eight districts of the state to strengthen doorstep medical services.
This first-of-its-kind initiative in Himachal aims to ensure uninterrupted delivery of healthcare services—such as medicine distribution, screening, and counseling—to patients suffering from HIV, Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs), Tuberculosis (TB), and Hepatitis.
The programme seeks to improve treatment adherence and support viral load suppression among patients, ultimately enabling them to lead healthier, longer lives.
Commending the initiative, the Chief Minister said, 'Red Ribbon Clubs, youth, educational institutions, and NGOs have played a crucial role in raising awareness about HIV.
"Making Himachal Pradesh HIV-free is our shared responsibility. I am confident that these e-scooters will further strengthen our outreach and support mechanisms,' he said.
He further said that over 6,000 people in the state are currently living with HIV, most of whom have achieved viral load suppression—a reflection of the government's sustained efforts and effective policies.
The Chief Minister also emphasised that the promotion of electric vehicles in the state is aligned with the government's commitment to environmental conservation, and the deployment of e-scooters for health services is a step forward in this direction.
Health and Family Welfare Minister Dr. (Col.) Dhani Ram Shandil added that the State AIDS Control Society is actively working through 471 Red Ribbon Clubs in universities, colleges, and industrial training institutes across the state.
"The Adolescent Education Programme is also being implemented in schools. Additionally, the Department of Youth Services and Sports and Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan are collaborating to spread awareness about HIV among out-of-school youth," he said. UNI XC SSP

Agartala (Tripura) [India], June 26 (ANI): Tripura Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha on Wednesday said that drug traffickers will not be tolerated under any circumstances and that strict action is being taken against them under a zero-tolerance policy. CM Saha said that the central and state governments are taking a firm stance against drugs, and people from all sections of society must unite and fight against the menace. The Chief Minister made these remarks at a motorcycle rally held at Umakanta Maidan in Agartala today on the occasion of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. A blood donation camp was also organised for the Drug-Free India campaign. On the occasion, Dr. Saha, who also holds the Home portfolio, said that the United Nations declared this day as the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking in 1987 to prevent drug abuse and raise awareness about illegal drugs. 'This issue is very relevant today. Tripura is geographically surrounded by international borders on three sides and shares boundaries with Assam and Mizoram. In such a situation, Tripura's children are being targeted, and the state is being used as a corridor to traffic drugs into Bangladesh. Today's slogan--'Say No to Drugs'--is extremely important. Drug traffickers are smuggling drugs for money, and our children are falling prey to it. But it is not their fault. When it comes to Tripura, they become victims. These victims are in dire need of treatment,' he said. He added that the state government decided in the last budget to open drug de-addiction centres in all eight districts. About Rs 20 crore has been allocated for each centre, and the Ministry of Donor has sanctioned an additional Rs 198 crore to set up a larger drug de-addiction centre in Tripura. The foundation stone for the facility has already been laid at Bishramganj. The Chief Minister further informed that two drug de-addiction centres currently operate in the state, and private initiatives manage several others. 'It has been observed that those who use injectable drugs are mostly affected by HIV/AIDS. We try to provide treatment to such individuals if detected early. The AIDS Control Society in the state has been carrying out various initiatives to prevent HIV/AIDS. OST (Opioid Substitution Therapy) arrangements have also been made. The state government is firmly committed to a zero-tolerance policy against drugs. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah have made it clear that drug peddlers will not be spared under any circumstances,' Dr. Saha added. He said that drug seizures in Tripura have increased by 104% from 2023-24 to 2024-25, while drug destruction has seen a rise of 132%. Police, security forces, and other concerned agencies are actively working against drug trafficking. Chief Secretary J.K. Sinha, Director General of Police Anurag, DDG of the Narcotics Bureau (North Eastern Region) R. Sudhakar, Head of the Anti-Narcotics Task Force of Tripura A.R. VP Dhankhar collapses at function in Nainital, recovers soon after
Dehradun, June 25 (UNI) Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar collapsed during the golden jubilee function of Kumaon University in Nainital today as he turned emotional while meeting his old-time parliamentary colleague Dr Mahendra Pal. The VP however returned to normal soon after, and was found hale and hearty as a team of doctors examined him at the event venue. Vice President Dhankhar was the chief guest at Kumaon University's Golden Jubilee celebrations in Nainital on the first day of his three-day visit to the state. While addressing the function, the VP recalled his days as Lok Sabha member with former fellow parliamentarian Dr Mahendra Pal who was present there as a guest. During his 45-minute address, VP Dhankhar repeatedly mentioned Mahendra Pal, who was a Member Parliament with him in 1989 and was present at the event. After the opening ceremony of the Kumaon University function was over and he was done with his speech, VP Dhankhar came down from the stage and embraced Dr Pal with emotion. Pal and Dhankhar spoke to each other about old times for five minutes. This made Dr Pal emotional and he was in tears. Dhankhar on the other hand couldn't hold his tears and hugged Dr Pal, a former Congress Lok Sabha MP in 1989. As Dhankhar and Pal embraced each other the Vice President couldn't hold on to the hug and collapsed there. As the VP collapsed a team of doctors was immediately called and provided him with preliminary medical care. Vice President Dhankhar was bought to normal by the medical team. After a brief rest, the doctors found him hale and hearty. Later VP Dhankhar left the venue with Governor Lt General Gurmit Singh to take rest at Raj Bhavan Nainital. Earlier, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar arrived in Haldwani on a three-day Uttarakhand visit and to take part in different events.
