Three dead, three hospitalized following mass shooting in Virginia
April 8 (UPI) -- At least three people were killed and three others were injured in a mass shooting Tuesday evening in Virginia's Spotsylvania County, according to authorities who are searching for suspects.
Little is known about the shooting, and authorities are instructing residents who live near the Old Greenwich Circle area -- where the shooting occurred -- to stay indoors until a suspect, or suspects, was in police custody.
"We will be here all night until we find the suspects," Major Elizabeth Scott of the Spotsylvania County Sheriff's Office said in a press conference.
Authorities in Spotsylvania County, home to some 150,000 people about 60 miles south of Washington, D.C., were notified of the shooting in Old Greenwich Circle at about 5:30 p.m. EDT, with officers arriving at the scene to find multiple gunshot victims, the sheriff's office said in a statement.
Three people were pronounced dead at the scene, while three others were transported to local hospitals. The severity of their injuries, as well as their ages, were unknown.
Detectives are in the process of contacting next of kin, Scott said.
"Spotsylvania County has had a rough 24 hours," she said. "It is a tight-knit community. When something like this happens, the whole community comes together, and we couldn't ask for anything more."
Scott said there is a possibility of multiple suspects as she called on members of the public with information or videos of the shooting to contact the authorities.
"At this point in time, it is an active and fluid investigation," she said.
According to The Gun Violence Archive, which tallies all gun violence in the United States, there have been more than 70 mass shootings so far this year.
This is a developing story.

Netflix documentary revisits the Astroworld tragedy
A new Netflix documentary out Tuesday dives into the Astroworld Festival tragedy, which left 10 concertgoers dead in 2021. Why it matters: It's a comprehensive look at how the Houston music festival — headlined by rapper Travis Scott — went from a night to remember to a night of infamy. Driving the news:" Trainwreck: The Astroworld Tragedy" features interviews with survivors, paramedics and security personnel. Flashback: The festival took place at NRG Park in November 2021. Minutes before Scott took the stage, several people were crushed by a crowd surge that only got worse as the concert went on. In all, 10 people died in the crush — including a 9-year-old boy — and several others were critically injured. The intrigue: Houston police investigated the deaths, but no one was criminally charged. Scott and LiveNation, the show's promoter, later settled in court with the victims' families. Harris County, which owns NRG Park, and the city of Houston, which has jurisdiction over the facility, updated their procedures after the tragedy to include a unified command center for large events. What they're saying:"[The festival] was the place where joy, liberation and life collided with tragedy, destruction and death," executive producer Kari Lea said in a press release.

Huge alligator 'cited for suspicion of being a dinosaur' in N.C.
June 9 (UPI) -- A North Carolina sheriff's office assisted with the capture of a nearly 400-pound alligator and joked the reptile was "cited for suspicion of being a dinosaur without proper papers." The Onslow County Sheriff's Office said on social media that deputies responded alongside North Carolina Wildlife Resources personnel when the "prehistoric perp" was "caught loitering near the double yellow line on Old 30 Road." The gator, dubbed Pepe by the sheriff's office, was estimated to weigh between 350 and 400 pounds. The nearly 10-foot reptile "has been cited for Suspicion of Being a Dinosaur Without Proper Papers, Public Loitering with Intent to Sunbathe and Obstructing Traffic," the sheriff's office joked. Officials wrote the alligator was "safely relocated" with no injuries to humans or reptiles. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Onslow County Sheriff's Office (@

22 injured as Russia launches 499 drones, missiles at Ukraine
June 9 (UPI) -- Russia launched 499 drones and ballistic and cruise missiles against seven provinces across Ukraine, of which the Ukrainian Air Force claimed to have downed all but 22. At least 22 people were injured in provinces from the frontline regions of Sumy and Kharkiv in the east, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia in the south and Rivne in the northwest, which Gov. Oleksandr Koval said had sustained the heaviest bombardment since Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022. "According to preliminary information, one civilian was injured. Huge gratitude for the professionalism of our air defense forces, which destroyed a large number of enemy targets," Koval wrote in a post on X. Kyiv and the surrounding area also came under sustained attack with air raid warnings sounding for more than 10 hours, but no casualties were reported. The Ukrainian Air Force said Russian forces launched 479 attack and decoy drones from multiple directions, four ballistic missiles, 11 cruise missiles and five air-launched cruise and anti-radar missiles from above the Black Sea. The air force said its fighter aircraft, air defense and electronic warfare units and mobile fire groups were able to destroy or otherwise "neutralize" 460 of the drones and all but three of the missiles, two of which never made it to their targets. However, some made it through with explosions heard in at least 10 locations and debris from downed projectiles falling in 17 places. Most of the cruise missiles came from Russia's Saratov region, where air bases have twice sustained attacks from Ukrainian UAV assaults in the past week. Ukrainian special forces claimed another strike overnight on an airfield deep inside Russian territory in Nizhny Novgorod region, 260 miles east of Moscow, damaging two fighter jets on the ground. "According to preliminary information, two units of enemy aircraft were hit (probably MiG-31 and Su-30/34 aircraft). The results of the combat operation are being clarified," said the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The Guardian said Savasleyka airfield was home to MiG-31K warplanes used to deploy air-to-surface ballistic missiles of a type that have been used to attack Ukrainian cities and Ukrainian forces. Footage was also circulating online of a drone strike even further afield in Cheboksary in the Chuvashia Republic on an industrial facility producing guidance systems parts used in motorized howitzers, short-range ballistic missiles and both loitering and attack drones. Regional Gov. Oleg Nikolayev, issued a statement confirming production at the VNIIR Progress factory had been paused but that there had been no injuries. The plant is under U.S., European Union and British sanctions targeting military industrial facilities and Russia's ability to evade Western efforts to target its war machine. The operating company was sanctioned by the United States in 2023, followed by the EU and Britain in 2024. Copyright 2025 UPI News Corporation. All Rights Reserved.
