The story of a released prisoner who turns up at his ex's home in a stolen van to try to win her back is re-told in hit play

But, one particular incident saw a van stolen from outside a premises in the town only for it to be recovered in Newport, some 43 kilometres away.
That incident – with names changed, for obvious reasons – sets the scene for 'Outlaw Pete', a play set in Ballinrobe that has won rave reviews in Galway, which debuts in Castlebar's Linenhall on May 22.
Pete, newly released from prison, arrives at the door of his ex-partner, Jane, in a van he stole from Ballinrobe, determined to win her back. Things get messier when it he learns that Jane now has two kids in an unhappy relationship with someone else.
What ensues is described as 'a powerful exploration of love, loyalty, and deception' with three complicated characters, culminating in a dramatic climax that has enthralled sold-out audiences in Galway's Town Hall Theatre.
Mick Donnellan is delighted to see his eighth play come back to the county that inspired its not-for-the-faint-hearted 18+ plot.
'It's set in Ballinrobe, and it has certain references to other places like Ballintubber, Westport and Castlebar is in there, Partry is in there, Galway is in there. People love to hear place,' Mick tells the Irish Independent.
'It's like Brian Friel and Faith Healer, it's all about the lyricism of the place. It's always an effective thing.'
Mick Donnellan is not unfamiliar with setting works of fiction in provincial Ireland. Four of his novels; Fishermans's Blues, Galway Blues, El Nino and The Dead Soup all shine a light on the more rugged side of life in Mayo, Galway and Athlone.
Outlaw Pete stars Carl Jones, Laura Hutchinson, Brian Cahill, and Carl Jones. The former two have strong Mayo connections, which is a plus in this kind of setting.
'They know the part and the material and the dialogue and the material of the story is quite Mayo, is quite rural, is quite west,' says Mick. 'It's just capturing a kind of a dialogue or a story or a sort of a hunger that some people have to hear their own community on the stage.'

The plot, for reasons outlined above, isn't as daft as it seems either.
'If you watch a mafia film and it's all very slick and it's all very cool, but when you are in Ballinrobe it has the hallmarks of a gang feud and gang violence, but there is always a quirky Mayo side where they don't steal a Ferrari, they steal a flower van. There is always that kind of random sort of absurdity to it that I was trying to capture in the play as well,' he says.
'There is an issue at the moment with gang violence, but it's the way that it's interpreted that makes it creative and interesting to watch.'
The words 'gripping… riveting… powerful… hilarious… original… beautifully written… outstanding acting… superbly produced' accompanied reviews of Outlaw Pete after its Galway run.
Where to then after Linenhall?
'You never know. About ten years ago I wrote a play [Radio Luxembourg] that was supposed to be just a private reading just for a tester and I ended up selling the movie rights [Tiger Raid]. We shot it in Jordan as a war film, so you never know where it is going to go,' says Mick.
'I think I'd like to bring it [Outlaw Pete] again to Galway for the Galway Fringe [Festival], during the [Galway] Arts Festival, there's a fringe festival there as well that runs alongside it, I think that will be our next big hit.'
Outlaw Pete by Mick Donnellan will be performed in the Linenhall Arts Centre on Thursday, May 22 at 8pm.

Sean 'Diddy' Combs' ex-girlfriend accuses him of kicking, punching and dragging her in sex trafficking trial

"He was my baby," said the woman, who is testifying under the pseudonym Jane to protect her privacy. Asked under cross-examination by defense lawyer Teny Geragos if she currently loves Combs, Jane said, "I do." The woman said she enjoyed taking care of Combs, bathing him and falling asleep with him while watching television after "hotel nights," their phrase for drug-fueled encounters in which she would have sex with male entertainers while Combs watched. The questioning was part of Combs' strategy to portray Jane as a willing participant in the sexual encounters with him, not a victim of sex trafficking as prosecutors allege. Combs, 55, and the founder of Bad Boy Records, has pleaded not guilty. Prosecutors say Combs used force and threats of cutting off financial support to coerce women into taking part in the encounters, sometimes known as "Freak Offs." Over three days under questioning by prosecutors in Manhattan federal court, Jane said that she agreed to have sex with a male escort in front of Combs early in their relationship but that he later dismissed her requests to stop and threatened to stop paying her rent. On Monday, Jane said Combs kicked, punched and dragged her during an altercation at her Los Angeles home last June. Later that night, he told her to perform oral sex on a male entertainer even though she said she did not want to, Jane said. Under questioning by Geragos on Tuesday, Jane said she researched the terms "cuck" and "cuckold" during her relationship with Combs to try to understand his desires. The words refer to men who enjoy watching female partners with other men, Jane said. "I just wanted to know why my partner wanted so many of these nights and what was driving him," Jane said. Combs' defense lawyers are expected to cross-examine Jane until Thursday. Testimony is in its fifth week. Combs could face life in prison if convicted on all counts. Also known throughout his career as Puff Daddy and P. Diddy, Combs turned artists like Notorious B.I.G. and Usher into stars, elevating hip-hop in American culture and becoming a billionaire in the process.

Pic: Justin Farrelly Emer, who Tony met when he was just 19 years old, died following a cancer battle during the COVID-19 pandemic. Speaking to the Irish Independent following the nuptials, Dr Holohan said his wedding to Ciara was 'beautiful from start to finish.' The couple were surrounded by their nearest and dearest, with the doctor's son, Ronan, standing as best man as they tied the knot at the National Maritime Museum in Dun Laoghaoire. The bride went for a non-traditional floral skirt which went just past the knees while the groom went for a navy suit and tie combination. Dr Holohan also told the publication that he and his new wife were heading to France 'for a few weeks of rest and time together.' In October 2023, Dr Holohan opened up on his blossoming relationship with Ciara as he spoke on an episode of The Meaning of Life which aired on RTÉ One. 'I have met somebody new,' he revealed, 'I have a new partner for the last number of months in my life, which is wonderful.' Asked if he was nervous about the new relationship, he admitted it was a 'significant thing to find the basis for moving on' but Ciara had made it easier. He added that meeting another family for just the second time in his life was 'kind of strange and lovely all at the same time.'

Although their chemistry was undeniable, Joanna has been open in past about how it was 'not love at first sight.' When asked by the Irish Independent if the pair were joined at the hip from day one, the former Miss Universe Ireland replied: 'I wouldn't say that.' However, it didn't take them long to make the first move, with the couple quickly embarking on a long-distance relationship, with Joanna modelling in London and Conor based back home for Munster training. Speaking to host Ray D'Arcy on his RTÉ Radio 1, Conor explained: 'Joanna moved in fully at the start of lockdown which has been brilliant.' 'Thankfully we were planning it anyway, Joanna was due to move in at the end of the Six Nations back in March, it was happening anyway,' he added at the time. Now, as they celebrate two years of marital bliss, lets take a walk down memory lane and look back on how things began for the loved up couple.
