Rory McIlroy determined not to ‘burden' himself with numbers after Masters glory

BreakingNews.ie14-05-2025

Rory McIlroy has no plans to 'burden' himself with victory targets and is determined to enjoy achieving everything he dreamed of following his memorable Masters triumph.
McIlroy's nerve-shredding victory at Augusta National made him just the sixth male golfer to complete a career grand slam and gave him a fifth major title, one behind Sir Nick Faldo and two adrift of Europe's most prolific major winner, Harry Vardon.

And the world number two has every chance of equalling Faldo's tally in the 107th US PGA Championship at Quail Hollow, a venue where he won his first PGA Tour title in 2010 and has since claimed three more victories, including last year.

'I have achieved everything that I wanted, I've done everything I've wanted to do in the game,' McIlroy said before completing his preparations by playing the back nine at a rain-soaked Quail Hollow on Wednesday.
'I dreamed as a child of becoming the best player in the world and winning all the majors. I've done that. Everything beyond this, for however long I decide to play the game competitively, is a bonus.
'If I can just try to get the best out of myself each and every week, I know what my abilities are. I know the golf that I can play.

'And if I keep turning up and just trying to do that each and every week, especially in these four big ones a year, I know that I'll have my chances.
'I've always said I'm never going to put a number on it. I've talked about trying to become the best European ever or the best international player ever or whatever that is.

'But again, the numbers tell one story, but it mightn't be the full story.
'I feel like I sort of burdened myself with the career grand slam stuff, and I want to enjoy this.

'I want to enjoy what I've achieved, and I want to enjoy the last decade or whatever of my career, and I don't want to burden myself by numbers or statistics. I just want to go and try to play the best golf I can.'
McIlroy admits he still feels like crying whenever he sees footage of his emotional reaction to winning the Masters, and the Northern Irishman has been blown away by the reaction to his historic success after beating Justin Rose on the first hole of a play-off.

'It's everything I thought it would be,' McIlroy added. 'I think the outpouring of support and congratulatory messages has been absolutely amazing.
'Look, everyone needs to have goals and dreams, and I've been able to do something that I dreamed of for a long time. I'm still going to set myself goals. I'm still going to try to achieve certain things. But I sit here knowing that that very well could be the highlight of my career.

'That's a very cool thing. I want to still create a lot of other highlights and high points, but I'm not sure if any other win will live up to what happened a few weeks ago.'

Cardinals break 6-game skid, pound Brewers

June 14 - Nolan Gorman had a three-run homer and Willson Contreras added a solo shot as the visiting St. Louis Cardinals snapped a six-game losing streak with an 8-5 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers on Saturday. Gorman's homer put the Cardinals up 7-1 in the fifth. Willson Contreras was hit by a pitch with one out and Nolan Arenado walked. Gorman then sent an 0-1 sinker from starter Jose Quintana (4-2) 433 feet to center for his fourth homer. The Brewers answered with three in the bottom half off starter Andre Pallante. Brice Turang singled and moved to second on a wild pitch, then Caleb Durbin walked and both advanced on a sacrifice bunt. Sal Frelick followed with a two-run double down the left field line and Jackson Chourio delivered an RBI single to chase Pallante. Milwaukee loaded the bases with one out in the eighth on a single, hit batter and walk, but Phil Maton fanned Frelick and Chourio. Willson Contreras made it 8-4 with his ninth homer with one out in the ninth. His brother, William Contreras, answered with his sixth homer to open the bottom half off Ryan Helsley to make it 8-5. Kyle Leahy (2-1) got the win with 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief. St. Louis scored three in the fourth, including two unearned runs, to go up 4-0. Arenado singled to open and Gorman walked. Jordan Walker, activated earlier Saturday off the injured list, bounced to third, but Durbin threw wildly to second on a potential double play. Arenado scored, Gorman took third and Walker advanced to second. Victor Scott II followed with a two-run single to left-center. The Brewers got one back in the bottom half when Chourio tripled to open and scored on a passed ball. The Cardinals took a 1-0 lead in the first, but also squandered a scoring opportunity. Masyn Winn singled to open and Ivan Herrera walked. Alec Burleson followed with an RBI single, but center fielder Chourio threw out Herrera at third on a call overturned on replay. Both starters lasted 4 1/3 innings, with Quintana yielding seven runs (five earned) on eight hits and three walks with four strikeouts. Pallante gave up four runs (three earned) on four hits and two walks while striking out seven. --Field Level Media

Back-to-back homers boost Orioles over Angels

June 14 - Cedric Mullins and Gary Sanchez, both fresh off the injured list, hit back-to-back home runs in a three-run sixth inning as the Baltimore Orioles defeated the visiting Los Angeles Angels for the second straight day, winning 6-5 on Saturday. Jordan Westburg drove in two runs and Adley Rutschman, Coby Mayo and Mullins all racked up two hits as eight Orioles had at least one hit. Keegan Akin (2-0) was the winning pitcher, giving up one run in 1 1/3 innings of relief. Felix Bautista notched his 14th save by pitching the ninth, needing a nine-pitch effort to strike out Logan O'Hoppe for the final out. Luis Rengifo drilled two home runs and Mike Trout also homered for Los Angeles, while Taylor Ward picked up three hits and an RBI. Angels starter Tyler Anderson (2-4) was charged with six runs on nine hits in five-plus innings. He walked four and struck out two. The Orioles, who've won three of their past four games, got all three runs in the sixth before the first out was recorded. The rally began with Ramon Laureano's walk before Mullins smacked his 11th homer and Sanchez followed with his first 2025 long ball in his first game since April 27. Mullins returned Monday from a right hamstring strain, while Sanchez was activated Saturday after recovering from right wrist inflammation. Baltimore starting pitcher Tomoyuki Sugano allowed three runs on six hits over 4 2/3 innings. He struck out four and walked a pair. Trout's two-run homer went off the left field foul pole in the first inning. His first home run in nearly two weeks gave him 11 for the season. The Orioles got one run in the bottom of the inning on Westburg's groundout. They pulled even with two outs in the third on Gunnar Henderson's single followed by Westburg's go-ahead single. Ward's fifth-inning double tied the score in the fifth and Rengifo's leadoff home run put the Angels ahead in the sixth. Rengifo's eighth-inning solo blast off Andrew Kittredge was his third homer of the year. --Field Level Media
