Colin Berry obituary
Colin Berry, who has died aged 79 after suffering from dementia, was a disc jockey and newsreader whose calm, chatty style was heard on BBC Radio 2 for almost 40 years. He presented late-night and early-morning shows, and then filled the 2am to 5am gap between them as a regular host of You and the Night and the Music when the station started broadcasting 24 hours a day in 1979.
'It's certainly for insomniacs, but not only for them,' he said on Ray Moore's late show, moments before the inaugural edition went out, with Berry as its first presenter. 'There are drivers, there are people working through the night.'
He added that the format included short features such as a nationwide 'what's on' guide and a cookery slot for 'those of our listeners who get home late at night and feel like a snack'. Moore retorted: 'If you think I'm going to go home and start frying eggs at 4 o'clock in the morning, you've got another think coming.'
Through-the-night programming proved a success and, after the show's run ended five years later, several others replaced it.
You and the Night and the Music's launch made Radio 2 Britain's first round-the-clock national radio station. At the same time it became totally independent of Radio 1, finally ending a system where some programmes were shared.
From 1981, Berry also started regularly hosting his second stint on what the BBC termed the 'early show', which followed You and the Night and the Music and preceded Terry Wogan's breakfast programme.
His Radio 2 career was a merry-go-round of presenting during the 'graveyard' hours (Night Ride, 1973-75 and 1989-95, Music Through Midnight, 1975, and the early show, 1975-77 and 1981-88).
In an era when the station's output was dominated by easy-listening music, his soothing tones chimed with the style.
Berry was also a newsreader, and eventually the longest-serving one on the station (1973-2012). His was the first voice on Radio 2 to announce the death of Diana, Princess of Wales in 1997.
But his face was recognised – by television viewers in dozens of countries – only after he became the BBC's presenter reading out the British panel's votes in the Eurovision Song Contest, a job that lasted from 1977 to 2002. 'Television Centre, London, calling – here we have the results of the United Kingdom jury,' were his typical opening words. He missed just two years – with Moore taking over duties in 1980 and Ken Bruce in 1998.
His responsibility was actually greater than just revealing the choices of the jurors to up to 600 million viewers from the basement of the BBC. He was also on standby to take over from Wogan as the commentator in the event of technical problems, although he was never called on to step in.
Berry was born at Brocket Hall, a stately home near Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire – which the City of London hospital had been using as a maternity unit since the second world war – to Nellie (nee Young) and Cecil Berry, a director of Allied Suppliers, which bought goods for the Home and Colonial Stores grocer's chain.
His fascination for radio began as a child growing up in Kenton, Middlesex. Berry would tape records from BBC Light Programme shows and add his own links, with his parents listening on a speaker in another room.
On leaving Wembley grammar school, he landed a job in the London offices of the ITV company Granada Television as a studio technician responsible for slotting commercials into the breaks between programmes.
He moved on to selling advertising airtime at Westward Television, and then the pirate station Radio Caroline (1965-67), where he additionally organised records and tapes to be taken to its ship off the Essex coast. He had a stint as a newsreader there – under the name Robin Berry, because it already had a disc jockey called Colin Nicol – but gave it up after suffering from sea sickness.
A brief job followed selling advertising at Yorkshire Television's London office in 1968 and he was a DJ in London, Essex and Sussex clubs, as well as becoming a record plugger, a summer relief announcer for HTV in 1971 and presenter of his own Saturday afternoon show on BBC Radio Medway (1972-73).
In 1973, he joined Radios 1 and 2 to write and present programme trailers, and he soon became a Radio 2 announcer, newsreader and DJ.
Berry's other shows on the station included European Pop Jury (1978-83), with presenters introducing new songs from their own countries and a panel of young people from each nation voting for the best at the end, Eurovision Song Contest-style.
He later returned to BBC local radio with regular shows featuring a strong dose of nostalgia on Three Counties Radio, broadcasting to Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire and Buckinghamshire, from 2008 to 2019.
In 1981, Berry married Sandra Barker. She and their daughter, Marina, and son, Jonathan, survive him.
Colin Derrick Berry, broadcaster, born 29 January 1946; died 16 April 2025

Artwork referencing JK Rowling taken down by National Trust after being 'tampered with'
The National Trust says it has taken down a piece of art featuring JK Rowling's name after it was "tampered with by a member of the public". It has urged people "not to damage or tamper with artworks" once they are finished and on public display. Between April and November last year, visitors to Derbyshire's Hardwick Hall were invited to nominate a "contemporary Virtuous Woman", whose name was then sewn into the fabric, before it was put on public show in February. Until recently, the artwork, A Virtuous Woman, has continued to be on display, featuring the Harry Potter author's name, which was "stitched over by other participants" at an unspecified time. Feminist campaigner Jean Hatchet said on X last week that she had "corrected" the work by unpicking the stitching which was over Rowling's name. It comes after criticism of Rowling 's views on gender issues that have seen her called transphobic by activists, which she has denied. The National Trust said the piece has been "taken off display… to protect it from further tampering or damage". Ms Hatchet has criticised the organisation's move, saying she removed the "stitching with the correct tool", took "great time and care", and did not damage it. She told Sky News: "Everyone involved in managing this project behaved in a cowardly fashion after a vindictive individual performed an act of woman-hating. It should have been removed immediately. Because they wouldn't, we did." The stitched names of British queens, artist Yoko Ono, ex-prime minister Baroness Margaret Thatcher, climate campaigner Greta Thunberg, and singer Taylor Swift among others appear not to have stitching over them on the recycled textile. The work comes from artist Layla Khoo in association with the University of Leeds and the National Trust. A spokeswoman for the trust said: "The artwork was open to contributions for eight months and closed in November when the piece was finished and put on public display. "During the participation phase, JK Rowling's name was stitched on to the piece seven times and in two instances it was stitched over by other participants. "At the time the artwork was completed and subsequently hung, JK Rowling's name appeared five times without any overstitching. "We ask people not to damage or tamper with artworks once they are finished and on public display. "The piece has been taken off display for investigation and to protect it from further tampering or damage. We take all claims and incidents of damage to items in our care seriously and investigate each one."

Nintendo Switch 2 launch live – I've got my console, here's how to buy yours
After months – no, years – of rumours and industry chatter, the Nintendo Switch 2 is very nearly here. Launching at midnight tonight, units began arriving in journalists' hands earlier today – including mine – and soon you'll be able to get one too. Queues are forming outside shops across the country, and the countdown has officially begun. While it's too late to pre-order, shops across the country are getting ready to fling open their doors. Every Smyths Toys store will open at 12am, with a small amount of extra stock for anyone willing to queue. Over on Oxford Street, Currys is hosting a midnight event too – but it's strictly for customers who've already pre-ordered from that branch. A few retailers are holding back stock for Thursday morning. Argos says it'll have consoles ready to collect from 6am, with same-day click-and-collect available nationwide. EE will have launch bundles too, but you'll need to be an existing pay monthly customer to get in on the action. We're now just a couple of hours away, and retailers are getting ready to drop more Switch 2 stock overnight and into the early morning. If you're still trying to secure one, I'll be updating this blog with every restock as it happens. Stay tuned. Nintendo Switch 2 stock at UK retailers But that's not all... But while those five Smyths Toys stores are opening up at 11am, every other Smyths Toys shop will be opening at midnight. There will be limited walk-in stock, so get queueing. If you're lucky, you'll be able to walk away with a console right there and then. If you're queuing up, send me a picture on Instagram or X – I'd love to see the commotion. Alex Lee4 June 2025 22:29 How much does the Nintendo Switch 2 cost? The standalone console costs £395.99 in the UK. But if you want the Nintendo Switch 2 bundled with Mario Kart World, it'll cost £429.99. You can also get bundles that include the new camera and the pro camera (£555, Alex Lee4 June 2025 22:02 These five Smyths Toys stores open in an hour We're officially in countdown mode. In just one hour, five Smyths Toys stores will be opening early for launch night festivities, and if you're anywhere near one of them, it might be worth heading down. Doors open at 11pm at Boucher Road (Belfast), Glasgow, Stockport, Romford and Hull. There will be Mario Kart World demos to play, and the first 100 people through the door at each shop will get a free Nintendo-themed goodie bag. Oh, and there will be limited stock of the Nintendo Switch 2 available, too. Alex Lee4 June 2025 22:00 Mario Kart World review Tech writer Steve Hogarty spent six hours playing Mario Kart World – and he certainly had some thoughts (19 in fact). From dynamic weather effects to four-player mode, he's rounded up everything you need to know before it launches: Mario Kart World review: You need to know these things before it drops I found supersized vehicles, day-to-night racing, and Mariachi Waluigi – and that's just the start Alex Lee4 June 2025 21:30 Very's dropped a Nintendo Switch 2 bundle If you're looking to get your hands on the new console, along with the camera and pro controller, you're in luck because Very has just dropped a bundle containing the whole lot. But, I will say that it does cost £555. Alex Lee4 June 2025 21:06 Asda stock drop Some eagle-eyed readers are very kindly helping me while I balance booting up Mario Kart World with stock drops. Asda's George is selling Nintendo Switch 2 consoles. They'll arrive next week, but the stock is there. Pre-order now at George Alex Lee4 June 2025 17:59 A closer look at the unboxing I'm juggling unboxing this console and keeping an eye on stock, but if you want a closer look, here's the screen on the Nintendo Switch 2: The screen is larger than the original Switch, with nearly two extra inches on its predecessor. Alex Lee4 June 2025 17:14 My Nintendo Switch 2 console just arrived Many writers reported that they wouldn't receive a Nintendo Switch 2 console before the launch, so you can imagine how shocked I was when the doorbell went and, well: After months of covering the console, it feels surreal to have it in front of me. If you want to order a console, it won't arrive in time for launch day, but you can still get your hands on one: Alex Lee4 June 2025 16:42 How to prepare for the Nintendo Switch 2 launch If you're hoping to buy a Nintendo Switch 2 tonight, now's a good time to get everything ready. Make sure you're logged in to your retailer accounts, your payment details are saved, and delivery info is filled in. There's nothing worse than having to make an account when all you want to do is buy a console. Some sites (like the My Nintendo Store) will only let you buy the console if you have an active Switch Online membership, while others (like EE) require you to be a pay monthly customer. Alex Lee4 June 2025 15:41 Who's probably not worth checking at midnight? Very and ShopTo are both still taking pre-orders right now, with delivery scheduled for next week – 9 June at ShopTo and 13 June at Very. Since they're already in stock, they'll probably still be available at midnight, but nothing's likely to change. If you're aiming for launch day delivery, these aren't the ones to watch. Game? Don't bother, I say. After cancelling some pre-orders last week, its FAQ now says: 'We cannot guarantee there will be stock available in stores'. Right now, you can weirdly get a Switch 2 into your basket for £9,999. It might indicate a launch day restock, but who knows at this point. Alex Lee

Love Island rips up the rule book for sexiest season ever with giant bed for THROUPLES - and takes drastic measures after being slammed for unrealistic beauty standards
By The usual play of Love Island is to couple up with one other person from the opposite sex. But bosses are hoping for potential throuples in the villa this year as they 'tear up the rule book' and install new furniture to help encourage bonking and create drama. One of the new additions includes a trampoline bed that sits across the swimming pool, and the Love Island exec has insisted it has been tested for up to four people. The secret hideaway - which includes a bed and hot tub - is now open 24 hours a day for those that aren't coupled up. Speaking ahead of the 10-year anniversary series of the hit reality show, which will air on Monday, Creative Director of the show Mike Spencer-Hayler, told the Mail: 'There's a new trampoline bed, that would be good for throuples. 'It can take the weight of four, we've checked. It's all about keeping the show fresh and exciting. And that's what we've got.' ITV bosses have attempted to give the new villa and series a glam-up to avoid the show being boring. The TV executive also revealed ITV will broadcast intimate activity if and when it happens and that they've had to 'tear up the rule book' this year, after viewing figures have dwindled after years of tame series of the reality show hit. 'The hideaway is open for business for 24 hours all the time, as long as they don't come with their partner,' Mike said. 'We told the islanders last year they could but they kept forgetting they could come in here. We've seen the same things time and time again how and it's boring. We've got to move on. 'It felt static, and the show needs to feel fresh. People that come in, all do the same thing. Because they've all watched it time and time again. It became too formatted. 'We've got to push forward. All the twist and turns, we're going to give it all we've got to make it an exciting series.' Last year the show had a shock entry when TOWIE favourite Joey Essex, 34, entered the villa. Asked if they will be getting another former reality tv star or celebrity in as a contestant this year, Mike said something else will be a surprise. 'No former love islanders are coming in this year,' he said. Something big is coming in week one though. Not another reality star like Joey Essex.' 'We've got a big week one planned. It's not a celebrity, but totally new. It's even different this year the way islanders will couple up. 'You can't rest on people loving the show, we have to keep it exciting. Tear up the rule book a bit. In a bid to create further drama they have also shortened the walls of the iconic terrace, which is often used as a hideaway for bombshells looking to kiss another contestant in more private surroundings. But Mike confirmed the days of hiding away from prying eyes is all over. 'The terrace walls are shorter and more see through now too. So you can see more up there. We just felt like it was too covered up. Extra gossip.' Love Island has often come under fire for only casting ultra-thin singles who have the same body shapes 'year after year'. And even though the contestants of the show are shacked up with each other for up to eight weeks, it's often been criticised for not showing people eating meals and that the absence might encourage eating disorders and unrealistic beauty standards. Despite having their meals cooked for them by private chefs, ITV has previously confirmed the reason for not showing them eating is because mealtimes are considered downtime for the islanders and are not filmed due to technical reasons, like the sounds of eating with microphones. But it can now be revealed that contestants this year will be seen eating in the villa for the first time. 'In this day and age, we need to be showing it,' said the Love Island boss. 'Viewers always ask us where and when the islanders eat lunch and dinner. Well this year you'll see it on camera now.' Mike also said the reason comes as conversations are often heard amongst the islanders that make for good TV. 'There are chats that do happen whilst they eat,' he said. 'It might feature, it might not when it comes to the final edit, but there is a lot of whispering and there always has been. 'Sometimes it will affect how they might know information, because the viewer hasn't seen it. Now they will see it.' Love Island's 2025 lineup has already been mocked after unveiling 'clones' of previous stars. Love Island producers - who have long been accused of lacking diversity in their casting - seemed to be sticking to 'their type on paper' as they opted for new stars who bear striking resemblance to past contestants. Taking to social media, bemused fans penned: 'Why do the always pick people that look like ex islanders'; 'they all looks the same as past contestants ahahahahhahaha'; 'Let's guess... alot of clones again from other series ???' Fans were left doing a double take when Harry Cooksley was unveiled as the final Islander of the 2025 series, with many commenting that they had mistaken him for Tom Clare. In a spooky coincidence, Harry, 29, and Tom, 25, don't just have their rugged good looks in common, but their careers too - with both working as semi-professional footballers. Both the epitome of a blonde bombshells with their long, flowing curls and striking features, Helena Ford could be mistaken for Danielle Sellers. Helena, 29, also does already have a connection to the villa, as a friend of show favourite Zara McDermott. Fans were convinced Toby Aromolaran was attempting to go on the show for a fourth time when Kyle Ashman was unveiled. Megan Forte Clarke was already being dubbed a Maura Higgins lookalike when she was rumoured to be in the lineup. The actress, 24, from Dublin, recently starred as one of the Ugly Sisters in Cinderella, but she's likely to get the pulses racing on the ITV2 show due to her sassy Irish charm, which sparks further similarities to Love Island legend Maura.
