Thomas Pynchon has a new novel coming this fall. It's his first in 12 years
NEW YORK (AP) — One month shy of his 88th birthday, Thomas Pynchon is set to publish his first book in 12 years.
'Shadow Ticket' is scheduled for Oct. 7, Penguin Press announced Wednesday.
You could call the book, set in Milwaukee in 1932, Pynchon-esque.
'Hicks McTaggart, a one-time strikebreaker turned private eye, thinks he's found job security until he gets sent out on what should be a routine case, locating and bringing back the heiress of a Wisconsin cheese fortune who's taken a mind to go wandering,' the publisher's announcement reads in part. 'Before he knows it, he's been shanghaied onto a transoceanic liner, ending up eventually in Hungary where there's no shoreline, a language from some other planet, and enough pastry to see any cop well into retirement – and of course no sign of the runaway heiress he's supposed to be chasing.'
The famously expansive, and press-averse author has not released a new book since 'Bleeding Edge' in 2013. He is best known for the classic 'Gravity's Rainbow,' and his other works include 'V.', 'Mason & Dixon,' 'Against the Day' and 'Inherent Vice.'

Slowed by hand surgery at the start of the year from a freak accident, Scheffler appears to be in full stride with one major already in the bag and another around the corner at the U.S. Open. Advertisement On one of the tougher PGA Tour tests of the year, Scheffler made one bogey over the final 40 holes at Muirfield Village. He finished at 10-under 278. Ben Griffin tried to make it interesting at the end with a 12-foot eagle on the par-5 15th and a 25-foot birdie putt on the par-3 16th to close within two shots with two to play. Scheffler, however, doesn't make mistakes. Griffin made double bogey on the 17th. Griffin made a 4-foot par on the 18th for a 73 to finish alone in second, worth $2.2 million, more than what he earned when he won at Colonial last week. Sepp Straka (70) finished another shot back. Advertisement Scheffler now has won three times in his last four starts — the exception was Colonial, a tie for fourth the week after winning the PGA Championship — and expanded his margin at No. 1 in the world to levels not seen since Woods in his peak years. (AP) — Maja Stark of Sweden continued the steady play she demonstrated all week to win the U.S. Women's Open at Erin Hills for her first major championship. Stark shot an even-par 72 to finish at 7-under 281, two strokes ahead of top-ranked Nelly Korda and Japan's Rio Takeda. Advertisement Stark earned $2.4 million in the biggest event of the women's golf season. The 25-year-old Stark became the sixth Swede to win a women's major, and the first since Anna Nordqvist in the 2021 Women's British Open. The former Oklahoma State player is the first Swede to win a U.S. Women's Open since Annika Sorenstam in 2006. Stark won her second second LPGA Tour title. She also won the 2022 ISPS Handa World Invitational in Northern Ireland, an event co-sanctioned by Ladies European Tour. Korda closed with a 71, and Takeda had a 72. Advertisement European Tour SALZBERG, Austria (AP) — Nicolai von Dellingshausen of Germany closed with a 5-under 65 to win the Austrian Alpine Open by two shots and capture his first title on the European tour. Von Dellingshausen began the final round one shot behind fellow German Marcel Schneider and quickly seized control with three birdies and an eagle on the opening nine. After another birdie to start the back nine, he closed with eight straight pars. Von Dellingshausen finished at 19-under 261, two ahead of Schneider (68) and Kristoffer Reitan, who was coming off a victory in Belgium last week at the Soudal Open. Reitan shot a 60, missing an eagle putt on the final hole in his bid for only the second 59 in European tour history. Advertisement PGA Tour Champions DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Miguel Angel Jimenez won the Principal Charity Classic at Wakonda Club for his third PGA Tour Champions victory of the year, beating Soren Kjeldsen and Cameron Percy with a birdie on the first hole of a playoff. Jimenez closed with a birdie on the 311-yard, par-4 18th for a 2-under 70, then made a 4-footer for another birdie on the extra hole. The 61-year-old Spanish star led wire-to-wire, opening with rounds of 63 and 66. Crowe had a one-shot lead over Martin Laird going into the final round and was four ahead heading to the back nine. Laird stayed in the game, and a two-shot swing on the 14th — Laird made birdie, Crowe his first bogey of the day — trimmed Crowe's lead to one. Crowe birdied the 15th for a two-shot swing in his favor, and Laird bogeyed the next two. French Open: Elina Svitolina beats 2024 runner-up Jasmine Paolini, faces 3-time champ Swiatek next
PARIS (AP) — Elina Svitolina saved three match points and came back to eliminate 2024 runner-up Jasmine Paolini 4-6, 7-6 (6), 6-1 on Sunday, earning her fifth French Open quarterfinal appearance. The 13th-seeded Svitolina, who is from Ukraine, is a three-time Grand Slam semifinalist — getting that far twice at Wimbledon and once at the U.S. Open — but is 0-4 so far in the quarterfinals at Roland-Garros. 'Last few months have been really, really tough for the Ukrainian people, and last few weeks have been awful, as well,' Svitolina said. 'It's something that all Ukrainians live on a daily basis with — with the bad news. So when I'm on the court, I'm fully focused on my job, on my tennis, and try to get these wins, try to keep Ukrainian flag flying for my country. That's what motivates me to keep pushing, to keep winning, to keep playing tennis, in general.' She'll try to go a step further on Tuesday, when she will face three-time defending champion Iga Swiatek, who trailed by a set and a break before eliminating 2022 Wimbledon champion Elina Rybakina 1-6, 6-3, 7-5 at Court Philippe-Chatrier. A year ago, she reached her first major final at the French Open, losing to Swiatek, then also made it to the championship match at Wimbledon, where she lost to Barbora Krejcikova. Against Svitolina, Paolini served for the victory while leading by a set and a break at 5-3 in the second. But the Italian got broken at 15 there. She then held her first two match points while ahead 5-4, 15-40 as Svitolina served. Paolini missed a forehand on the initial chance to end things and a backhand on the next. In the ensuing tiebreaker, Paolini once again was a single point from winning — and once again failed to come through, this time when Svitolina ended a 14-stroke exchange with a volley winner. From there, Svitolina was in control, racing to a 4-0 lead in the third set. She is quite comfortable on clay, where she has earned a tour-leading 16 of her 27 wins this season. Tommy Paul and Frances Tiafoe reached their first French Open quarterfinals and gave the United States two men in that round in Paris for the first time since 1996. No. 12 seed Paul beat No. 25 Alexei Popyrin of Australia 6-3, 6-3, 6-3, and No. 15 Tiafoe defeated Daniel Altmaier of Germany 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (4). Paul now meets No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz, the defending champion. Alcaraz defeated No. 13 Ben Shelton of the U.S. 7-6 (8), 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.
