Orlando's tourist tax pulled in $40 million in March. Will it continue?
The tax on Orlando area hotel rooms just raked in the second-largest, one-month bonanza ever.
But optimism over Orange County's near-record collection of $40.1 million in March, announced this morning, was tempered a bit by Comptroller Phil Diamond, whose office tracks the money generated by the 6% surcharge on hotel room rentals.
'On one hand, it's the second-most ever,' he said. 'On the other, it's a decrease from [March] last year.'
The year-over-year drop was slight — less than $400,000.
Orange County tourist-tax collections set new annual record
The comptroller's tourist-tax report generally lags about a month or so behind collection. The April report is expected in early June.
The March largesse overcame some negative factors. Diamond said some travelers may have put off a spring vacation to Central Florida until later in the year so they could visit Universal Orlando's new theme park, Epic Universe, which features five immersive lands including areas based on the Harry Potter film series, 'How to Train Your Dragon' and Super Nintendo video games.
The park is set to officially open May 22.
'I think the opening of Epic Universe is going to be a real shot of adrenaline for the tourism economy,' Diamond said. 'I think it's going to bring a lot of people that wouldn't have come to Central Florida otherwise.'
Orange commissioners commit $29M for bids to lure WrestleMania, Jaguars
The March figures mark the midway point of the fiscal year which began October 1.
Tourist tax collections through the first six months of the current fiscal year total about $202.5 million, about $8 million better than last year's total of $194.2 million through the same period. The pace slowed slightly over last year's second half, but final collections nonetheless pulled in a record of $359.4 million.
More than half of the $5.4 billion generated by Tourist Development Tax, or TDT for short, since it was first levied about 45 years ago has been spent to build, expand, maintain and operate the Orange County convention center on I-Drive.
TDT money also pays for Visit Orlando to promote tourism; builds and improves Orlando's stadiums, arenas and arts venues; and draws attention to the region's smaller attractions, including its expanding array of culinary jewels.
Last month, county commissioners dangled $29 million in TDT cash as 'incentive' funds in an effort to lure WrestleMania to Orlando in 2031 and to persuade NFL owners to choose Camping World Stadium to host Jacksonville Jaguars' home games in 2027 while the pro fooball team's stadium undergoes a billion-dollar renovation.

Travis Hunter's wife dishes on nerves, swag from her first NFL WAG event
Leanna Lenee is ready for her rookie season as an NFL WAG. After tying the knot with Travis Hunter, the Jaguars' No. 2 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, in May, Lenee attended her first event with other NFL wives and girlfriends on Tuesday in Jacksonville, as seen on her TikTok. 'I went to my first WAG event, so I'm going to show you everything I got,' Lenee said, referring to the goodie bags they received at the Seaside Soirée, which took place at Hawkers restaurant in Neptune. Advertisement Some of the goodies included skincare, beauty products, gift cards, cookies and bottles of tequila and vodka. Lenee also showed off a black bodysuit she customized, courtesy of Pressed, to add the Jacksonville area code, 904, on the front in cheetah print. 'I get nervous around people and I always feel like I come off as standoffish or mean,' Lenee said Wednesday while getting ready to attend the Jaguars' open practice. 'Because I'm not a person that's openly inviting or in tune — I don't put myself in conversations. But it's really because I'm so nervous. ' All the ladies here are very welcoming and were understanding of that. I think there was a lot of girls like me where we were kind of like nervous, but there were a lot of returning wives and, of course, they're comfortable with each other. And I know I'll get there… it was my first time meeting everyone.' She added that the women shared information on how to get game tickets and where the best seats in the stadium are located — along with the best places in Jacksonville for beauty appointments. Lenee returned to social media around the time of her wedding after going private in late 2024 due to public scrutiny over her relationship with Hunter. The Jaguars open the 2025 season against the Carolina Panthers in Jacksonville on Sept. 7.

WrestleMania 42 to take place in Las Vegas once again
WWE announced on Wednesday that WrestleMania 42 will be held in Las Vegas for the second straight year after it was previously revealed that New Orleans would be the host site. Reports about the premiere event of the WWE season leaving New Orleans surfaced a few weeks back. As speculation ran rampant on social media, WWE announced during its Money in the Bank premium live event that WrestleMania will be back at Allegiant Stadium. "Las Vegas helped to deliver the biggest WrestleMania of all time, shattering records and delivering an amazing week for fans around the world," WWE president Nick Khan said in a news release. "We look forward to once again working with the talented and effective teams at the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority and Allegiant Stadium to bring WrestleMania back to the Sports and Entertainment Capital of the World." Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA) CEO Steve Hill, who talked to Fox News Digital earlier this year ahead of WrestleMania 41, touted the return of the event as well. "We are honored that WWE has once again selected Las Vegas to host the biggest event on their calendar," Hill said. "Bringing WrestleMania 42 to Las Vegas underscores our city's reputation for elevating world-class events to new heights. We are excited to build on last year's success and deliver an even more incredible experience for the WWE Universe in 2026." WrestleMania in Las Vegas was just as busy as Super Bowl week in the city. WWE hosted events up and down the Las Vegas Strip, including the Hall of Fame ceremony, the Roast of WrestleMania and WrestleMania After Dark at the Fontainebleau Las Vegas. WWE said "Monday Night Raw," "Friday Night SmackDown" and WWE World will return. NXT Stand & Deliver will also take place in the city. It will be the second time in WrestleMania's history that the show will be hosted in the same city in consecutive years. WrestleMania IV and WrestleMania V were held at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, N.J. Follow Fox News Digital's sports coverage on X and subscribe to the Fox News Sports Huddle newsletter.

HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON Director Says He'd Love to Do a Live-Action Sequel With Cate Blanchett Reprising Her Role — GeekTyrant
Writer and director Dean DeBlois has taken his beloved animated film series How to Train Your Dragon , and he has brought it to live-action. The first remake hits theaters this week, and DeBlois is already looking to the future of the franchise. When asked by ComicBook, at the film's red carpet premiere, about the possibility of a live-action How to Train Your Dragon 2 , and if that could mean seeing Cate Blanchett return to the franchise as the character Valka, DeBlois said: "Well, I'm wishful as well. It's still early days. I think she is probably waiting for a script, but I've been knocking on that door. I wrote the character of Valka for her, so I told her it'll always be hers to turn down first." In the animated movies, the character Valka is revealed to be Hiccup's mother and Stoick's wife, who was taken by a dragon shortly after Hiccup was born and was thought to be dead. Two decades later, however, she accidentally crosses paths with her son and finally reunites with her husband. If she returns, Blanchett would be the second How to Train Your Dragon actor making the shift from animation to live action, with Gerard Butler having returned to the franchise to play Stoick, Hiccup's father, after voicing the character for a few years. Talking about the yet-to-be-confirmed sequel, DeBois also shared some details about the future of Toothless, as we see the beloved dragon maturing on screen. "We knew we were going to go there. The idea is that Toothless is roughly Hiccup's age in dragon years, so he is a juvenile, an adolescent, as well, aging into adulthood. That is going to alter his design in subtle ways, but mostly it's going to alter his mentality because he's a very sentient dragon. He has his own opinions about everything, and he'll also start to come into his own as a leader of his kind." Would you like to see the live-action How to Train Your Dragon universe expanded in sequels? The first film hits theaters this Friday.
