New 'Final Destination' film sparks misrepresented visuals

"Anyone knows this news? The ceiling of a movie theatre in the Philippines collapsed during the screening of the Final Destination 6 movie. That's really the ultimate experience," says an Indonesian-language Facebook post on May 26, 2025. It includes a two-minute clip of a crowd in distress as water starts to leak from a cinema's ceiling, with some parts starting to fall off. A similar post written in Burmese surfaced on the same day with an image showing the damaged interior of a movie house. "The ceiling collapsed while screening Final Destination," the caption reads. "Final Destination: Bloodlines", the latest instalment in the horror franchise, topped the North American box office following its release in mid-May (archived link). Similar claims about a theatre collapsing during the film's screening also surfaced on X, Instagram and TikTok and were shared in other languages, including Hindi, English, and Tagalog. While such an incident was reported in Argentina's capital Buenos Aires in May, the circulating visuals are unrelated (archived link). A reverse image search using keyframes found multiple news reports shared the clip in June 2015, including from ABC7 News (archived link). "Six people were reported hurt Monday night in Cebu, Philippines when parts of the ceiling of an Ayala Center Cebu cinema room collapsed after intense water leakage," part of the report reads, referring to a city in central Philippines. It goes to say that 350 people were in the room for a brand relaunch event. A similar clip of the event taken from another angle has appeared in reports from Philippine media organisations Sunstar and Rappler (archived here and here). Another reverse search of the photo showing the destroyed theatre found it in an NBC News article published February 28, 2025 -- months before the release of "Final Destination: Bloodlines" (archived link). "Movie theater ceiling collapses during screening of 'Captain America: Brave New World'," reads the report's headline. "The historic Liberty Theater in Wenatchee, Wash. Two people were in the theater during the incident, but no injuries were reported," says the caption to the picture. The photo is credited to Wenatchee Valley Fire Department, which uploaded an Instagram post about the same event on February 26, 2025 (archived here and here). "At approximately 8 PM, Wenatchee Valley firefighters responded to a reported ceiling collapse at Liberty Cinema. Two people were inside the theater at the time, but fortunately, no injuries were reported. The cause of the collapse remains under investigation," the post states. Months-old footage shows flooding in Florida, not Thailand after heavy rain

"Flooding around (Victory Monument) in Thailand at 3:15pm today. Myanmar citizens beware," reads the Burmese-language caption of a Facebook video shared on May 27, 2025. Superimposed Burmese-language text on the video -- which shows partially submerged houses and buildings in an area inundated with water -- reads, "Flooding in Thailand. Those who are close to the sea, please be careful". The video circulated online days after Thai media reported that a combination of heavy rain and slow water drainage had flooded parts of Bangkok (archived here and here). The footage was also shared in similar Burmese posts on Facebook, Instagram and TikTok. But the clip is old and was not filmed in Bangkok. A reverse image search on Google using keyframes from the falsely shared video led to an identical clip published on Instagram on October 9, 2024 (archived link). Its caption reads: "Fort Myers Beach, halfway down Estero island @ 5:30pm on Oct 9. Milton was about double the flooding from Helene for FMB." Category 3 storm Hurricane Milton made landfall on Florida's Gulf Coast on October 9, 2024, pounding communities still reeling from the effects of Hurricane Helene two weeks earlier. At least 16 people died as Milton sent tornadoes spinning across Florida and left millions of buildings without power (archived link). The video matches Google Street View imagery of Fort Myers Beach (archived link). AFP has previously debunked other misinformation related to flooding in Thailand here.

Fei Zai Prawn Noodles reopens after 2-month hiatus

We're starting June off with some great news — Pasir Panjang's beloved prawn mee stall, Fei Zai (Fat Boy) Pork Rib Prawn Noodles, reopened on 2 Jun after a 2-month hiatus. Earlier in Mar, Fei Zai announced through a Facebook post that they would be going on a 2-month extended break from 24 Mar to Jun, after 20 years of operation at the same outlet. However, they didn't disclose the reason why. A netizen claimed to have spoken with the owner before the break, who allegedly shared that the stall would be closed for good due to a rent increase. Regardless of the reason, many customers are just excited to get their prawn mee fix at Fei Zai again after 2 long months. One such customer even 'went down almost every weekend just to see when will he be back.' There weren't many updates on Fei Zai's socials in this time, so can you blame him? Now the question is, have the owners lost their touch after the break? You'd be pleased to know that, based on another patron who headed down on their first day of reopening, 'the standard is still great'! While the standard remained the same, the prices have unfortunately increased, each item by S$0.50. Here are some of the prices you should take note of before heading down. The cheapest dish on Fei Zai's menu is their Prawn Noodle, priced at S$4.50 and S$5.50. The most popular item on their menu, as depicted by the stall's name, is the Prawn Noodle with Pork Rib (S$6/S$7). If you're already making the trip down to Fei Zai, might as well go all out and get their Big Prawn with Pork Rib (S$10/S$12), right? Don't worry about making your money's worth, as the small bowl already comes with 2 luxuriously large prawns and pork ribs, immersed in a umami-packed broth scattered with shallots. Feel free to customise every component of your dish to your preference, from the soup/dry versions to your choice of noodle between yellow mee, kway teow or bee hoon. This is your sign to try a bowl of this prawn mee, as Fei Zai (Fat Boy) Pork Rib Prawn Noodles reopens. They supposedly close at 1pm, but most dishes are sold out by 11am, so I'd recommend heading down first thing in the AM!
