Dublin thief posted videos of stolen €90,000 on Snapchat, court told
A HAMMER-wielding robber stole €90,000 from a shop manager using "extreme threats of violence" and later sent videos of the cash to his friends on Snapchat, it is alleged.
Stephen McMullen (27) is accused of brandishing the hammer while ordering the manager to take cash from safes in a supermarket in Co Kildare.
He was granted bail despite garda objections and the case against him was adjourned at Dublin District Court today.
Mr McMullen, of Rowlagh Gardens, Clondalkin, is charged with robbery and production of a hammer capable of inflicting serious injury at Costcutter, Castle Village Drive, Celbridge, Co Kildare on July 17 this year.
Objecting to bail, Garda Jennifer Finnegan told Judge John Brennan the store manager was opening up at 4.53am when two men arrived in a Ford Transit van that had been stolen in an earlier burglary in Maynooth.
They entered the shop and one, alleged to be the accused, had a hammer. According to the prosecution, he 'threatened the store manager's life' and told him to open two safes. He also allegedly told the manager to destroy the CCTV.
Footage showed a man armed with a hammer who was a similar height and build to the accused, Gda Finnegan said.
In a later search of the accused's home address, some €27,870 was found in a Lidl bag in the attic. The money was wrapped in 'distinctive white bands' identical to those used by the alleged victim, the garda said.
It was alleged the accused was seen on CCTV arriving at the address in a taxi carrying a Lidl bag.
A phone alleged to be Mr McMullen's was seized at the address and, according to the gardai, it had "pinged" off a mast in Celbridge less than 2km from the shop, 13 minutes after the alleged robbery.
It was alleged Mr McMullen had posted videos of the stolen cash on Snapchat and told friends he 'got €90,000 in a robbery.'
The garda said the accused flew to Lanzarote 24 hours after the robbery and did not take the booked return flight but came home on another flight to attend his brother's funeral.
Gda Finnegan believed the accused was a flight risk and would flee if bailed. She also feared he had access to the outstanding €63,000 cash and would dispose of it, and that he would contact the alleged victim to intimidate him.
Applying for bail, defence solicitor Catherine Dolan said Mr McMullen, who was presumed innocent, made no admissions in interview. There was no forensic evidence linking him to the hammer, the stolen van or the cash found at his family home.
There were five other adults there and he was living in a granny flat with a separate entrance, she said.
Mr McMullen denied the Snapchat account was his and there was no evidence linking him to it, other than a username that did not require any identification to set up, Ms Dolan said. The accused had gone to Lanzarote for a holiday with his girlfriend who was pregnant and flew home early when his brother died in 'tragic circumstances."
Judge Brennan said the charges were serious but granted bail with a €3,000 independent surety, to be approved by the court.
Under conditions, the accused must surrender his passport, sign on daily at Ronanstown garda station and keep a night-time curfew.
He was remanded in custody to appear in Cloverhill District Court next week.

Gardaí investigating social media scammer after hundreds conned by bogus Electric Picnic tickets
GARDAÍ ARE INVESTIGATING a woman with a large following on social media who allegedly scammed dozens – and potentially hundreds – of people after she claimed to have Electric Picnic tickets for sale. The woman never transferred the tickets after people allegedly paid her the money for them. It is understood that the woman made a six-figure sum from the scam and it is understood that she has so far repaid roughly half of it after questioning by gardaí. Victims online said they trusted the woman as she has a large following on social media, and some of them knew her personally. It is alleged that the woman posted on her Instagram story last month that she was selling two tickets for Electric Picnic. She has more than 6,000 followers on Instagram. The hugely popular sold-out music festival is to take place in Stradbally, Co Laois on the weekend of 29 August. Many people have found themselves without a ticket and have turned to second-hand sources, despite warnings from festival organisers that scams are rampant. One victim, Zara McGettigan, was conned out of €360. She told The Journal that she initially didn't trust that the tickets were legitimate, but after exchanging photos and video messages with the alleged scammer over Snapchat, she felt the woman was trustworthy. They'd also previously met in person and had mutual acquaintances. The alleged scammer said she had to sell her tickets because she'd failed her college exams and repeats were taking place on the Friday and Monday of the festival, making it impossible for her to attend. At first, McGettigan was only asked to transfer half the amount the ticket was worth, and agreed that she'd give the rest once tickets became transferable via Ticketmaster closer to the date of the festival. 'Then a couple of days later, I get a message from her. She said, 'Oh, somebody's offering me €450. Do you reckon you could send the rest on?' 'I probably did it a bit in the spur of the moment. I just sent it on. But again, I know this girl, I've met her before.' Advertisement McGettigan said they spoke frequently in the weeks after that. Once the tickets became transferrable, McGettigan's friends began receiving theirs, which they'd bought from other second-hand sources. But McGettigan still hadn't received hers. Last Thursday, she texted the woman who gave various excuses as to why she couldn't send the ticket immediately. On Sunday, McGettigan received a message from the woman saying her Revolut had been hacked. McGettigan didn't understand how this would affect the ticket transfer. Figuring it was a scam, she reported the woman to gardaí. She said that since she posted a TikTok about the experience, she's been inundated with comments and messages from people saying they were scammed by the same person. Some say they've got their money back. Others haven't. 'Who is going to be scammed by someone they know in real life?' one alleged victim said in a TikTok video. This woman told her followers that she only realised she may have been scammed when she read the comments under McGettigan's video. When she confronted the accused, she was told that there was a problem with transferring the tickets but that it would be fixed soon. When she asked for her money back, she was told it couldn't be sent on Revolut but would be sent via bank transfer. As it was a Friday night, it would only arrive on Monday. However, the victim did not believe the money was sent, and she subsequently went to gardaí. A spokesperson for An Garda Síochána confirmed that it is investigating the case. 'It is important that people exert a great degree of caution if attempting to purchase tickets for a sold-out event through any third-party, known or otherwise,' they said. 'Do not trust that the tickets you believe you are purchasing are real. It is likely that they will not materialise and in fact, do not exist. 'Please do not send money through any app in advance.' Man charged with assaulting Dublin Bus driver in ‘vicious and random' city centre attack
The accused was "caught red-handed" when a passing garda saw what happened and intervened, a court heard A man attacked a Dublin Bus driver with a metal implement in a 'vicious', random and unprovoked assault in the city centre, it is alleged. Ionut Christian Bariz (39) is accused of striking the 63-year-old man on the head from behind with the weapon, then punching him to the ground as he walked home from work on a crowded street in the middle of the day. The accused was "caught red-handed" when a passing garda saw what happened and intervened, a court heard. Judge John Brennan refused him bail and remanded him in custody when he appeared in Dublin District Court. Mr Bariz, from Romania and of no fixed address, is charged with assault causing harm to the driver and possession of an article intended to cause injury. Objecting to bail, Garda Katherine Ward said the driver was making his way home from work at Beresford Place at 2pm yesterday after finishing a shift when he was 'randomly assaulted.' He was struck on the back of the head with a 'metal article approximately 12 inches in length' and before he could register this had occurred, he was punched on the head from behind, causing him to fall to the ground. A garda on patrol nearby witnessed the alleged assault and exited his patrol vehicle, Gda Ward continued. The accused dropped the metal implement and gardai used incapacitant spray and arrested him 'due to the level of aggression and violence in the assault witnessed.' The accused was taken to Pearse Street garda station where he made no reply to the charges after caution. According to gardai, there was 'no reason' for the accused to assault the driver, who was not known to him. It was a 'random attack on a busy street in the middle of the day with no regard for members of the public,' the garda said. The area was 'highly populated' with residents and road traffic. 'It was only by good fortune that gardai were in the immediate area and intervened in the assault,' she said. The alleged victim suffered swelling and pain to his head and neck but also suffered 'significant mental distress' and was still 'quite shook up' last night. Gardai believed the accused, who had only been in Ireland for three months, was a 'serious flight risk' and had said he intended to leave Ireland in the immediate future. Gardai also feared he could commit offences if bailed. Applying for bail, defence solicitor Eoin Lysaght said Mr Bariz had been working but had lost his job because he could not get a PPS number. Judge Brennan said the charges were 'very serious' and the alleged attack was a 'quite vicious assault on a crowded street.' It was also alleged the accused was 'effectively caught red-handed." He remanded the accused in custody to appear in Cloverhill District Court tomorrow. The judge also recommended appropriate medical assistance for the accused, at Mr Lysaght's request. Man appears in court over alleged assault of Dublin Bus driver
A man has appeared in court charged with the alleged assault of a Dublin Bus driver. Romanian national Ionut Christian Biraz, 39, of no fixed address, who arrived in Ireland three months ago, was charged with assault causing harm to the 63-year-old driver at Beresford Place in the city centre and production of a weapon during the incident at around 2pm yesterday. He appeared before Dublin District Court. The court heard directions from the DPP have to be obtained, and an additional charge could be brought. Gardaí objected to bail due to the seriousness of the case. Gardaí agreed with defence solicitor Eoin Lysaght that Mr Biraz had the presumption of innocence and, about comments he made in his interview, English was not his first language. The judge refused bail. Mr Biraz, who listened to the proceedings with the help of an interpreter, was granted legal aid, and the judge also directed that he get medical attention in custody. He will appear again at Cloverhill District Court tomorrow.
