VCU turns to Bryant's Phil Martelli Jr. to take over as men's basketball coach
RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — VCU has hired Bryant's Phil Martelli Jr. as its new men's basketball coach.
The Rams announced the hiring Wednesday, coming less than a week after Ryan Odom left to take over at Virginia. VCU reached the NCAA Tournament but lost in the first round to BYU last week.
The son of the former longtime Saint Joseph's head coach, Martelli had won 43 games in two seasons with the Bulldogs. That included getting Bryant to the NCAAs this year after winning the America East regular-season and tournament titles.
The Bulldogs lost in the first round of the NCAAs to Michigan State in the program's second-ever March Madness bid.
'He has clearly lived his entire life amid college basketball legends but has made his own path and paid his dues through hard work, good character and a devotion to developing young men into the best versions of themselves through sport,' athletic director Ed McLaughlin said in a statement.
Martelli also had stints as an assistant at Delaware and Niagara, as well as working in the NBA G League and spending a year in a support role at Saint Joseph's.
Martelli was a four-year player for the Hawks under his father with NCAA trips in 2001 and 2003.
'I am excited to help carry on the legacy that has been set here and help elevate it to the next level,' Martelli said.
VCU has been a consistent mid-major winner going back to Jeff Capel's tenure in the mid-2000s. That includes 13 bids in the past 18 NCAA Tournaments.
The highlight was a First Four-to-Final Four run in 2011 under Shaka Smart, who is part of a list of coaches — including newly hired Will Wade at N.C. State — who have gone on to bigger jobs based on success at VCU.

Norway soccer federation says it will donate profits from Israel game to humanitarian work in Gaza
GENEVA (AP) — Norway's soccer federation says it 'cannot remain indifferent' to humanitarian suffering in Gaza and will donate any profits from an upcoming World Cup qualifying game against Israel to aid work there. Norway plays Israel in Oslo on Oct. 11. 'Neither we nor other organizations can remain indifferent to the humanitarian suffering and disproportionate attacks that the civilian population in Gaza has been subjected to for a long time,' Norwegian Football Federation President Lise Klaveness said in a statement Tuesday. 'We want to donate the proceeds to a humanitarian organization that saves lives in Gaza every day and provides active emergency aid on the ground,' she said. It wasn't immediately clear how much the Norwegian federation expected to earn through ticket sales for the match, which begin next week. The Israeli soccer federation responded to the move on Wednesday by urging its Norwegian counterpart also to condemn the Oct. 7, 2023, attacks and hostage-taking by Hamas. In a statement first published by British daily The Telegraph, the Israeli federation also called on the Norwegians to 'make sure that the money is not transferred to terrorist organizations or to whale hunting,' referring to an issue Norway has faced global criticism for. The Norwegian federation said it is working with UEFA and local police on security arrangements for the Oct. 11 game. Extra security is expected to limit capacity by up to 3,000 tickets, the federation said. Ullevaal Stadium typically has crowds of 26,000 for national-team games. Israel has been unable to host games in international competitions for security reasons since October 2023. It staged its 'home' qualifying game against Norway in Hungary. Carlos Alcaraz, Emma Raducanu lose in first round of U.S Open mixed doubles event
The much-hyped pairing of Carlos Alcaraz and Emma Raducanu was bounced in the first round of the new U.S. Open mixed doubles event on Tuesday. Alcaraz, the No. 2 men's player in the world, and Raducanu, the 35th-ranked women's player, are both former U.S. Open singles champions. Yet they lost 4-2, 4-2 against the top-seeded team of Jack Draper and Jessica Pegula in a match that lasted less than one hour. The mixed-doubles event has drawn criticism this year for a new format that prioritizes singles stars over teams that specialize in doubles play. Instead of a 32-team field, there were only 16 teams in the tournament this year. Half the field was determined by players' singles rankings, while the remaining eight teams were selected by the U.S. Tennis Association. The prize money is also significantly higher, with the winners taking home $1 million compared to only $200,000 last year. The gameplay and timing of the tournament were also changed, with sets being played to only four games, and the two-day event taking place before the singles as something of a tune-up. 'It would be like if, at the Olympics, they didn't let the actual high jumpers participate, and instead had basketball players compete in the high jump because it's more 'interesting,' Sara Errani, who won the doubles event with Andrea Vavassori last year, told the Associated Press earlier this week.
