Seven killed in Arunachal landslide
Itanagar, May 31 (UNI) Seven people died in a landslide on National Highway-13 between Bana and Seppa in Arunachal Pradesh's East Kameng district late Friday night amid heavy rains, leading to shock and major traffic disruption in the region.
Sources said a vehicle carrying seven people was swept away by a massive landslide on the Bana-Seppa stretch of NH-13 and plunged into a deep gorge. The vehicle was traveling towards Seppa when the rain-triggered landslide struck it.
Arunachal Pradesh Home Minister and local MLA Mama Natung has expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives in his Assembly constituency.
In a message, Natung extended his condolences to the bereaved families, stating: 'It's very painful to hear about the tragic loss of seven lives in my Assembly constituency. My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families.'
The Minister urged citizens to remain cautious during the monsoon season and avoid travel during nights, especially in landslide-prone areas.
'I request everyone to remain vigilant and avoid traveling at night during the monsoon season. My thoughts and prayers are with the affected families. Om Shanti Shanti,' Natung added.
Authorities have launched rescue and clearance operations at the site, while local administration has urged citizens to exercise caution and restrict travel during extreme weather conditions.
Meanwhile, sources said that rescue teams have recovered all seven bodies, but their identities are yet to be established.
The northeastern state has been experiencing incessant rains since Thursday.

Officials warn that 366 hilly locations in Guwahati remain landslide-prone, yet many residents continue living in these risky areas. Guwahati and Tezpur recorded the highest rainfall in May since records began, with 111 mm and 174 mm, respectively. Basanti Rai, a housewife from Rukminigaon, criticised local preparedness: "Neither was there any effort to flush out flood water, nor was preparedness in place to improve drainage around the nearby areas. Meghalaya and Nagaland Meghalaya recorded seven deaths in the last 24 hours due to landslides, drowning, and lightning. Cherrapunji and Mawsynram, among the wettest places on Earth, experienced an extraordinary 47 cm of rain in a single day. In Nagaland, a person was killed when a rockslide struck a dumper on National Highway-29 in Chümoukedima district. Mizoram and Manipur Mizoram reported six deaths, including three Myanmarese nationals who died after a hotel collapsed following a landslide. Low-lying villages, such as Sairang near Aizawl, were flooded by the swollen Tlawng river, forcing evacuations to higher ground. In Lunglei district's Tlabung town, preparations are underway to move families away from the banks of the Karnaphuli river. In Manipur, rivers Iril and Nambul rose above danger levels. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued red and orange alerts for parts of Assam and orange and yellow alerts for other northeast regions. While rainfall intensity is expected to decrease over the next 24 hours, residents remain on high alert. The northeastern region of India is prone to landslides and floods during the monsoon due to its hilly terrain and heavy rainfall. Urban centres like Guwahati face additional challenges from inadequate drainage systems and unplanned settlements on vulnerable slopes. Four killed in flash floods, landslides in Mizoram Meanwhile, as many as four people have died in multiple incidents of flash floods and landslides in Mizoram during the last 24 hours. Landslides have been reported in Aizawl, Lunglei, Champhai, Kolasib, Serchhip, Lawngtlai, Mamit, Saitual, Khawzawl and Hnahthial districts, damaging several houses and roads, and threatening lives of residents, according to the respective District Disaster Management Authorities in these districts. As per DDMA reports, three people of a family died in the flash floods in Champhai district, while another was killed in Serchhip district. One person was trapped under debris, but has been rescued, according to officials. 'I am deeply saddened by the tragic loss of lives and widespread damage caused by the recent heavy rainfall in Mizoram. My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and those who have lost their homes and properties. I pray for the speedy recovery of all injured. I commend the tireless efforts of all involved in the rescue operations amidst this crisis,' Mizoram Governor General VK Singh expressed his condolences in a post on X. IMD issues heavy rains warning for Arunachal Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings for Arunachal Pradesh for the coming week, till June 6, predicting 'very heavy rain, thunderstorm and Lightning' on May 31, ANI reported. Additionally, the local weather department has forecast 'heavy rain, thunderstorms and Lightning' from June 1 to 5 while predicting only 'heavy rain' on June 5 and 6. Earlier this week, the IMD issued a multi-hazard weather warning, predicting heavy rain, thunderstorms, and strong winds in many parts of the country. Several other regions including Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Lakshadweep, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura, Odisha and Telangana may experience heavy rain at isolated places, the weather department had said. Itanagar: Seven people, including two women and two children, were killed in a massive landslide on National Highway-13 in Arunachal Pradesh's East Kameng district amid heavy rains, officials said here on Saturday. An official said that a vehicle carrying seven people was swept away by a massive landslide between the Bana-Seppa stretch of NH-13 in East Kameng district and plunged into a gorge. The Maruti car was moving towards Seppa when the rain-triggered landslide struck it on Friday night. The rescue team later recovered the bodies. The Bana-Seppa route is widely regarded as one of the most landslide-prone corridors in Arunachal Pradesh, especially during the monsoon season (June to September). Arunachal Pradesh Home Minister and local MLA Mama Natung, and Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju deeply condoled the deaths. Union Minister Kiren Rijiju in his post said: "Deeply saddened by the tragic landslide in Arunachal Pradesh that claimed seven innocent lives. My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. May the departed souls rest in peace. Prayers for strength and healing to all affected by this heartbreaking loss." Most of the northeastern states, including Arunachal Pradesh, have been experiencing incessant rains since Thursday, badly affecting normal life. Due to the rains and landslides, road communications were severely affected in many districts across Arunachal Pradesh. A hanging bridge in Chulyu village, under Keyi Panyor district, has been completely washed away due to incessant rainfall. The bridge served as a shortcut to the main highway leading to Pitapool.
