VSB Group Connects One of Europe's Largest Repowering Projects to the Grid

DRESDEN, Germany, Aug. 15, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — The VSB Group has successfully connected the Repowering Wind Farm Elster to the grid. With an installed capacity of 105.6 megawatts, it ranks among the largest repowering projects in Europe. The energy output has increased sixfold compared to the original site – made possible by state-of-the-art turbine technology.
More energy, less land use
The new wind farm produces 235 gigawatt hours of electricity per year – enough to supply around 67,000 three-person households, comparable to a city the size of Heidelberg. 'Every kilowatt hour from Repowering Wind Farm Elster strengthens Europe's energy sovereignty and brings us closer to achieving the EU's climate targets,' says Dr Felix Grolman, CEO of the VSB Group.
Repowering sets new standards
With an efficiency increase of nearly 600 percent, the Elster site demonstrates the vast potential of repowering. This strategy is particularly promising in countries like Germany and France, where many older turbines are still in operation.
Future-proof development of existing sites
VSB has been involved with the Elster location for over two decades. Between autumn 2021 and autumn 2022, the legacy turbines were dismantled. Many of their components were given a second life – either reused for spare parts or in continued operation elsewhere.
'Grid connection, permitting, dismantling – the project posed significant challenges in every phase,' points out Thomas Winkler, Managing Director of VSB Germany, which was responsible for planning and construction. 'Its successful completion shows how existing sites can be future-proofed through long-standing experience and close cooperation with local partners and authorities.'
European technology, measurable benefits
The 16 SG 6.6-155 turbines come from European manufacturer Siemens Gamesa. 'Modern turbines like the SG 6.6-155 deliver higher yields using less land – and make a clearly measurable contribution to climate protection,' adds Christian Essiger, Head of Onshore Business in Germany at Siemens Gamesa. 'Each turbine generates around 48 times more energy over its lifetime than is needed for manufacturing, installation and operation.'
Expansion starts this autumn
Two additional turbines will be added in autumn 2025. For Grolman, the path forward is clear: 'Fewer turbines, more output, and smart use of available land – that's the key to a strong European wind industry.'

(Photo by Yasin AKGUL / AFP) SHAH ALAM - Türkiye welcomed over 26.3 million international visitors in the first half of 2025, posting a 1 per cent year-on-year increase despite global geopolitical uncertainties. The country, ranked as the world's fourth-largest incoming tourism market by United Nations Tourism's 2024 data, recorded USD$25.8 billion (RM109.24 billion) in tourism revenues between January and June, a 7.6 per cent jump from the same period last year. Visitors stayed an average of 10 nights and spent USD$106 (RM448.80) per night per person, marking an 8 per cent increase in daily expenditure compared to 2024. Kaleköy, Antalya. (Photo from Türkiye Culture and Tourism Ministry) Minister of Culture and Tourism Mehmet Nuri Ersoy said Türkiye's strategy of diversifying destinations, tourism products and source markets is paying off. 'Despite many geopolitical challenges in the first half of the year, Türkiye continued its sustainable growth in the tourism industry. Our focus is proving effective, and we remain confident in achieving our year-end target of USD$64 billion (RM270.98 billion) in tourism revenues,' he said at a press conference in Istanbul. Mehmet Nuri Ersoy speaking. (Photo from Türkiye Culture and Tourism Ministry) Russia, Germany and the UK emerged as Türkiye's top three visitor markets, contributing 2.61 million, 2.42 million, and 1.75 million visitors respectively. The nation also recorded double-digit growth from the Americas, several European countries, Central Asia and the Asia-Pacific region. Tourism analysts say the uptick in per capita spending signals stronger demand for higher-value experiences, a trend Türkiye is keen to capitalise on in the run-up to the peak summer and autumn seasons. Trump says no deal to end the Russia-Ukraine war was made with Putin after Alaska talks

US President Donald Trump (R) and Russian President Vladimir Putin shake hands at the end of a joint press conference after participating in a US-Russia summit on Ukraine at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage, Alaska, on August 15, 2025. (Photo by Drew ANGERER / AFP) JOINT BASE ELMENDORF-RICHARDSON, Alaska: US President Donald Trump said he and Vladimir Putin didn't reach a deal to end Russia's war in Ukraine after meeting on Friday - despite Putin saying they had come to "an understanding" - as the two leaders offered scant details on what was discussed while heaping praise on each other. In brief remarks as they shared a stage after meeting for about 2 ½ hours in Alaska, Putin said he and Trump had reached an "understanding" on Ukraine and warned Europe not to "torpedo the nascent progress." But Trump then said, "There's no deal until there's a deal" and said he planned to speak with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and European leaders soon, to brief them on the discussions. "We had an extremely productive meeting, and many points were agreed to," Trump said. "And there are just a very few that are left. Some are not that significant. One is probably the most significant, but we have a very good chance of getting there." He continued: "We didn't get there." The high-profile summit ended without a deal to end, or even pause, the brutal conflict - the largest land war in Europe since 1945 - which has raged for more than three years. The two were expected to hold a joint news conference but instead took turns giving brief remarks. Putin went first and then Trump, but both left without taking questions. Just getting back to the US for the first time in a decade was a win for Putin, whom the US and much of the world had long been attempting to isolate. Agreeing to come to Alaska to meet with Trump also stalled economic sanctions that Trump had promised unless Moscow worked harder to bring fighting to a close. The outcome could also benefit Russia's leader since Friday may simply lead to more meetings in the future. Russia's forces are making fair progress on the battlefield, and more discussions with Trump gives them more time to keep that up while avoiding sanctions. Putin thanked Trump for the "friendly" tone of their conversation and said Russia and the United States should "turn the page and go back to cooperation." He praised Trump as someone who "has a clear idea of what he wants to achieve and sincerely cares about the prosperity of his country, and at the same time shows understanding that Russia has its own national interests." "I expect that today's agreements will become a reference point not only for solving the Ukrainian problem, but will also mark the beginning of the restoration of businesslike, pragmatic relations between Russia and the US," Putin said. Trump ended his remarks by thanking Putin and saying, "we'll speak to you very soon and probably see you again very soon." When Putin smiled and offered, "next time in Moscow," Trump said "that's an interesting one" and said he might face criticism but "I could see it possibly happening." - AP
