Fungi and bacteria could be used to build homes one day, new study suggests

Living in a house made of fungi and bacteria may sound like the stuff of science fiction, but researchers are now one step closer to eventually making it a reality, according to a new study.
A research team in Montana grew dense, spongy tangles of mycelium — the rootlike structure that connects fungal networks underground — as a framework to create a living, self-repairing building material.
The ability to create durable, load-bearing structures with living material is still many years away. However, this discovery is an important step toward creating a sustainable alternative to cement, the binding agent in concrete, said Chelsea Heveran, senior author of the study published April 16 in the journal Cell Reports Physical Science.
More than 4 billion metric tons (4.4 billion tons) of cement is manufactured annually, contributing about 8% of global carbon dioxide emissions, according to London-based think tank Chatham House. This means if cement production were a country, it would rank third after China and the United States based on 2023 emissions.
'We asked 'what if we could do it a different way using biology?' That's the vision,' said Heveran, who is an assistant professor of mechanical and industrial engineering at Montana State University Bozeman.
The study authors introduced bacteria capable of producing calcium carbonate — the same chemical compound found in coral, eggshells and limestone — to the fungal mycelium, which served as scaffolds. Through a process called biomineralization, the calcium carbonate hardened the gooey, flexible mycelium into a stiff, bonelike structure.
'We're not the first ones to biomineralize something and call it a building material. … But if you want to keep (the bacteria) alive for longer so that you can do more with them, there's been some challenges involved to extend that viability,' Heveran said. 'So that's why we gave them fungal mycelium scaffolds, because the mycelium is really robust, and in nature, sometimes it biomineralizes (itself).'
The team experimented with letting the fungus, called Neurospora crassa, biomineralize on its own but found that killing it and then adding the microbes helped achieve a stiffer material in less time. The bacteria, called Sporosarcina pasteurii, created crystalline nets of calcium carbonate around the fungal threads after metabolizing urea, which is like food for the bacteria.
While other biomineralized building materials are only considered 'living' for a few days, Heveran said her team was able to keep the microbes active for at least four weeks, and eventually, that period could extend to months or even years.
'We're really excited in our next work to ask the questions 'could we seal a crack in the material?' Or 'could we sense something using these bacteria?' Like, imagine you had poor air quality in your building, and these bricks were your walls. Could they light up to (indicate) that?' Heveran said. 'Before, we couldn't do any of that because the microbes weren't alive enough, but they're very alive now.'
Before being used for homes, fences or other construction, a lot more testing is needed to find a living building material to replace cement, said Avinash Manjula-Basavanna, a bioengineer who was not involved in the study.
'These kinds of experiments are done on a small scale. … They are not necessarily a reflection of the bulk material properties,' said Manjula-Basavanna, who is senior research scientist at Northeastern University in Boston. 'It's not stiffness that people are interested in when it comes to construction materials. It is the strength, (the) load-bearing ability.'
While the strength and durability of living building materials is not on par with concrete yet, Heveran said mycelium is still a promising base. Thanks to its flexibility, the sticky substance could be shaped to include vascular-like channels within beams, bricks or walls.
Much like blood vessels in the human body, cells within living building materials need structures capable of delivering nutrients to stay alive. However, adding these structures into the design of building materials could make them weaker, presenting a challenge for future studies, Manjula-Basavanna said.
'I think in the future, they could be useful for single-story buildings, these smaller structures — it's very much feasible,' Manjula-Basavanna said. 'It might be five to 10 years down the line.'
Fungus is also a potential respiratory hazard, and though killing the mycelium reduces its allergen-producing ability, more research should be done before it's considered safe to inhabit, Heveran said.
'It's very clear to conceptualize a test framework by which the materials need to be strong enough, because those kinds of standards exist already,' Heveran said. 'But we don't have regulatory standards for my bricks that have cells in them.'
It's safe to say you won't see fungus bricks sold at your local home improvement store any time soon.
Heveran's team is just one of many in the country exploring the possibilities of mycelium, which has been used for other, softer items such as packaging and insulation.
Several government agencies are already interested in the possible use cases of living building materials, Heveran said.
'There's a lot of 'ifs' that would have to come into play for the average household to have a cost benefit from this,' Heveran said.
'But for society, it might be a lot cheaper when you're trying to build infrastructure for a community that really needs it, or if you're trying to build infrastructure in space, this might be a lot easier than carting cement and concrete up there,' she explained. 'The possibilities are really exciting to me.'

The spuds also include a pesticide that's banned in Europe, chlorpropham, which the EPA says is used to 'inhibit sprouting in stored potatoes.' The research was conducted using data from the 53,692 samples of 47 fruits and vegetables from the USDA, and found that 75% of the non-organic samples contained pesticides. Blackberries made the list for the first time, with EWG saying one sample had 14 different pesticide residues. The advocacy group's vice president of science, Alexis Temkin, told CNN, 'The guide is there to help consumers eat a lot of fruits and vegetables while trying to reduce pesticide exposure … One of the things that a lot of peer-reviewed studies have shown over and over again [is] that when people switch to an organic diet from a conventional diet, you can really see measurable levels in the reduction of pesticide levels in the urine.' The group also releases a list of the 'Clean Fifteen' — aka, the produce items with the lowest amount of pesticides. These include pineapples, sweet corn (both fresh and frozen), avocados, papaya, onions, frozen sweet peas, asparagus, cabbage, watermelon, cauliflower, bananas, mangos, carrots, mushrooms and kiwis. Most of these produce items do not have an edible skin, which is a common thread with the fruit and vegetables that the group says have high pesticide levels. The Alliance for Food and Farming's executive director, Teresa Thorne, told CNN, 'consumers should be reassured by decades of toxicology studies, government data and nutrition research which underscores the importance of a diet rich in fruits and vegetables on health and the safety of both organic and conventionally grown produce.' PFAS exposure before birth could put your teen at risk for high blood pressure, study finds

Prenatal exposure to a class of dangerous, widely used chemicals could be linked to your child having high blood pressure as a teen, according to a new study. Perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances, or PFAS — sometimes called 'forever chemicals' because they don't fully break down in the environment — are a class of about 15,000 human-made chemicals linked to cancers, endocrine-related conditions and developmental problems in children. New data shows the synthetic compounds could also be linked to a teen's risk of developing cardiovascular disease later in life, according to the study published Thursday in the Journal of the American Heart Association. Researchers looked at data from 1,094 children over an average of 12 years. The study team compared measurements of eight types of PFAS chemicals in maternal plasma samples 24 to 72 hours after birth and the children's blood pressure from medical records, according to the study. The kids who were exposed to higher levels of PFAS chemicals in utero were more likely to have higher blood pressure in childhood and adolescence, the research found. The connection was particularly strong in adolescents, male children and Black children, said senior study author Dr. Mingyu Zhang, assistant professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. The study is observational, meaning that while it shows associations, it cannot prove that PFAS exposure is the cause of the elevated blood pressure, Zhang said. While researchers did adjust for other factors that could be at play, there could be other elements driving the connection between PFAS and blood pressure, he added. That said, the results are strong because this study is one of the largest and most diverse while also using rigorous methods, said Dr. Carmen Marsit, Rollins Distinguished Professor of Research at Emory University's Rollins School of Public Health in Atlanta. He was not involved in the research. The topic is important to investigate because if a child has high blood pressure, they are more likely to also have higher blood pressure later on, Zhang said. And that is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease, the No. 1 cause of death in the United States. The largest effects were shown in adolescents who were exposed to a mixture of different PFAS chemicals during pregnancy compared with those who were not, which implies that there may be a synergistic impact on cardiometabolic health, Marsit said. 'Most children will be exposed to multiple different PFAS chemicals, so this is worrisome,' he said. The fact that adolescence is the age when prenatal exposure to PFAS is most linked with higher blood pressure suggests that some of the PFAS chemicals could take a long period of time to show their impacts, Marsit said. A long latency of the effects would mean that people don't just need to worry about reducing exposures, but interventions also need to be developed to prevent the health outcomes in people who were exposed earlier, he added. Not only are PFAS forever chemicals –– they also are everywhere chemicals. Data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey shows that this class of chemicals can be found in nearly every person in the United States, Marsit said in a previous CNN story. There are things you can do to reduce your exposure, however, he added. Major sources of exposure include food, water, and waterproof or stain-resistant items, Marsit said. Helpful steps include drinking filtered water –– using filters like those listed by the Environmental Working Group –– out of metal or glass containers, he said. Plastics contain PFAS and other toxic chemicals, Marsit said. A focus on fresh food can also help, as packaging for foods are often coated in PFAS chemicals, he added. And avoid using nonstick cookware, opting instead for metal, cast-iron or ceramic pots and pans, he said. Dusting, vacuuming, and washing your hands before eating or drinking can also reduce PFAS exposure, Marsit said. Healthy lifestyle choices can reduce the risk of high blood pressure for children who have been exposed to PFAS, Zhang said. 'These include maintaining a healthy weight, eating a balanced diet, reducing salt intake, and encouraging physical activity,' he added. But ultimately, an individual cannot solve PFAS exposure alone, Zhang said. 'We also need policy-level actions to limit and phase out PFAS use in products and industry, and to strengthen monitoring and regulation of PFAS in water systems,' he added.
