Lat Mayen: Perth Wildcats secure versatile two-way player on two-year deal

West Australian23-04-2025
Perth have pulled off a recruiting raid of NBL rivals Adelaide, securing versatile two-way player Lat Mayen a day after announcing the signature of fellow 36er Sunday Dech.
Mayen, a 206cm South Sudanese-Australian, is set to add flexibility to the Wildcats as they continue to build their roster for the post-Bryce Cotton era.
The 26-year-old said he was 'super excited' to be heading west for what will be his third stop in three seasons, having begun his NBL journey at Cairns.
'With four of my oldest brothers living in Perth, it's going to make it a smooth transition,' Mayen said.
'I'm very excited to play for 'JR' (John Rillie) and in front of the Red Army instead of up against them.
'Perth will bring new challenges that I'm ready to take on.'
Mayen and Dech join import duo Kristian Doolittle and Dylan Windler as well as veteran Jesse Wagstaff and reserve guard Elijah Pepper as the beginning of the Wildcats' core ahead of next season.
Perth general manager Danny Mills said he was thrilled to bring in Mayen, who averaged 5.4 points and almost four rebounds per game at Adelaide last campaign.
'Lat is a gifted athlete who has great positional size which continues to add to the versatility we are building our NBL26 roster with,' Mills said.
'Over his three seasons in the NBL he has shown flashes of the two-way impact he can have on the court which is something that really excites us.
'We're confident that in our player-development focused environment here he will take the next step in his game and be a consistent contributor.'

Mooney masterminds Manchester victory over doused Fire

Beth Mooney has masterminded a valuable victory for Manchester Originals in the Hundred Women, beating Welsh Fire in Cardiff by seven wickets. The visitors eased to victory with 19 balls to spare, after an impressive display in the field restricted Fire to 9-73 off their 100 balls. Mooney failed with the bat, making three, but showed her worth as skipper as she juggled her bowling resources. The innovative move was to give teenager pacer Monika Gaur 20 of the first 25 balls, at the end of which Fire were 2-12. This is possible in the Hundred's format. Balls are bowled in sets of five, two sets at a time from each end, with bowlers able to deliver consecutive sets. Beth Mooney stumps Georgia Elwiss off Sophie Ecclestone Nevertheless, it had not been done before in five seasons of the women's competition. Gaur began with ten balls, setting the tone as the English left-armer dismissed international colleagues Sophia Dunkey (2) and Tammy Beaumont (0). The world's No.1 spinner Sophie Ecclestone bowled the next five, conceding two runs, then Mooney brought Gaur back for ten more, five from each end, finishing with 2-10. From then on Mooney rotated her bowlers, using seven in all, to keep Fire doused. Ecclestone picked up 2-11 from her 20 balls, having Georgia Elwiss (11) stumped by Mooney and bowling West Indies' Hayley Matthews (22). English quick Lauren Filer claimed 3-8, including Australia's Jess Jonassen (20 off 19), and Scot Kathryn Bryce took 2-7 in ten balls late on. "I've sometimes got too many options but hopefully bowled them in the right spots today," said Mooney. "I speak to the coaching staff (head coach is Michael Klinger), making sure I have good options in the powerplay, then it is more about gut feel." After Matthews had Mooney lbw following a review Bryce (45 off 41) took Manchester to the brink of victory before she was stumped in Jonassen's second set. Jonassen took 1-10 off 15 but should have had more. In her first set Smales, on 1, edged behind off the glove, but it was a difficult edge to discern and Fire did not review. Later, with the game almost done, Smales (20 not out) was dropped on 15 and Deandra Dottin should have been stumped, though neither were easy chances. Earlier on Wednesday Southern Brave, the only squad without an Australian, thrashed Northern Superchargers by eight wickets with 17 balls to spare at Southampton. Annabel Sutherland fell to a fine catch Both sides came into the match boasting two wins from two but Superchargers were dismissed for 102 off the last of their 100 balls. Skipper Hollie Armitage was last out, top-scoring with 36. Australia's Annabel Sutherland was next best with 20 while Phoebe Litchfield made five before falling to New Zealand's Sophie Devine (3-15). Georgia Wareham was absent. Last year's match was a tie with both teams making 100, but this time Brave coasted to victory with England's Danni Wyatt-Hodge (43) and South Africa's Laura Wolvaardt (33) adding 62 in 45 balls. The results left Brave, who are coached by South Australian Luke Williams, top with 12 points. Superchargers and Originals are respectively third and fourth with eight, and Welsh Fire bottom and pointless.

Cricket news: Australia laugh off ‘not nice' Poms plot for upcoming Ashes series

Don't miss out on the headlines from Cricket. Followed categories will be added to My News. Star bowler Scott Boland has declared England's adoption of a harder verbal edge to their attacking approach to Test cricket will have little impact on Australia when the highly-anticipated Ashes begins in 100 days in Perth. The Victorian paceman tuned into the thrilling series between England and India, with the hosts deciding after the second Test that the were being 'too nice', which led to some tense moments in the final three matches. Asked if Australia would welcome a similar approach, Boland declared; 'Oh. They can do whatever they want when they are playing.' 'I think we've been pretty consistent in the way we've played since I've been in around the squad for the last four years. I think nothing much changed from how we play our cricket,' Boland said. 'Even going forward, it's just going to be whoever takes and whoever wins those big moments in the games. And I know we have got match winners with the bat or the ball. So ... if they want to sledge, that's fine. I don't think it's going to worry our guys too much.' The Victorian joined champion trio Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood as part of a four-pronged pace attack for the most recent Test in the West Indies in a rare occasion where selectors felt that was a better option than fielding spinner Nathan Lyon. MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA - AUGUST 13: Scott Boland of Australia speaks to the media during a media opportunity announcing 100 Days Until The Ashes cricket series at Queensbridge Square on August 13, 2025 in Melbourne, Australia. (Photo byfor Cricket Australia) While the veteran believes the chance will arise for all-fast bowling battery to convene again in Test cricket, he does not believe this will occur during the Ashes given's Lyon's nous at home and the pending availability of all-rounder Cameron Green to bowl. 'I hope so, but probably not in Australia. With our wickets, generally, Nathan is one of the best spin bowlers in the world (and) I think he can bowl in any conditions,' Boland said. 'He's probably been the glue to our bowling line-up over the last few years. And then I probably see Greenie coming back and bowling a lot more ... so that probably hurts the chances of four quicks as well.' Boland is yet to confirm with Victorian selectors which Sheffield Shield games he will play in the infancy of the summer as he readies himself for the Ashes but expects to play a couple of matches prior to the first Test in Perth. After his recent heroics in the Caribbean, which included a hattrick, he has taken a break from bowling and will not resume until later this month. But the 36-year-old believes his best is still to come, despite a remarkable career in which he has taken 62 wickets at 16.77 in 14 Tests. Statistically the best Test bowler in more than 100 years, Boland's certainty that he is the preferred reserve bowler is enabling him to focus on tailoring his preparation towards the nation's red ball matches, rather than trying to force a passage through domestic cricket. 'I'm just doing some gym and rehab and all that kind of stuff, just making sure I'm primed for ... the start of October, when we (have) got some Shield games ... and then get ready for the Ashes,' he said. 'I feel like even (though) I'm getting a little bit older, I still think my skills getting better. I'm learning how to prepare better for each series now, because it's not six months of playing cricket, it's pretty much (getting) ready for three months a year here. 'Then (it is) go again, have a bit of a break, reset, get my body good, and then go again. So even though I'm in the twilight of my career, I'm still learning about what's helping me and what's getting me to be able to perform every time.' A hero at the MCG on debut in the Boxing Day Test in 2021, he said the recent hattrick against the West Indies rated alongside that moment when it came to career highlights. While Boland would love to play every Test for the summer, he is mindful that is unlikely. But he believes the surplus of fast bowling talent will enable the Australian attack to continue to shine throughout the summer and beyond despite being in their 30s. 'I think it is going to help in the long run. We've spoken about it before, that we can ... sort of help each other's career (go for) a bit longer,' he said. 'Obviously I'm not playing as much white ball cricket over the last few years, so I feel that helps that I am bowling with the same ball all the time and I don't have to change my skills too much, whereas the other guys are playing all around the world in all different (formats). Scott Boland of Australia. 'In the long run, it is going to help us keep going and help me keep going for as long as I can. I don't want to put a time on when I'm going to finish up. Whenever that will be will be up to the coach and the selectors. I just want to keep going and keep m bod as good as I can for as long as I can.' Elsewhere, Boland endorsed Victorian teammate Marcus Harris as Australia's opener for the Ashes, backing the left-hander for a long-awaited Test return. The 33-year-old made the most recent of his 14 Test appearances during the 2021/22 Ashes campaign, but Sam Konstas' recent struggles in red-ball cricket has created a potential vacancy at the top of the order. 'I think it's probably going to come down to whoever makes probably the most runs in the first three or four Shield games,' Boland said. 'I know there's a handful of guys you could give it to that you know are going to do well. But I'd love to see Marcus Harris back.' Fremantle legend Michael Walters says he embraced larrikin tag to bring out best in Dockers

There are few Fremantle players who could bring a smile to your face like Michael Walters, and the recently retired legend says it was always a key part of his game. The Dockers great and The West Australian columnist appeared on Channel 7's The Front Bar and fittingly explained why it's always important to have a laugh at the footy. 'I've always been one who likes to have fun and just enjoy myself, and I thought if I could rub that off on a few players, that would make them play better,' Walters said. 'Footy is a strenuous job, so if you can have fun on the weekends, those are the best two hours of your week. I kept that away from Ross (Lyon) though!' As the panel went through his playing career, there were just as many highlights of his goal celebrations as there were goals, even revealing how some criticism from the newspaper inspired one. After kicking a goal against Sydney in 2021, Walters turned and feigned writing in a notepad, which he said was in response to some feedback he had received. 'The first one I copped some articles in The West Australian, but I'm a part of them now, so I enjoy it,' he said. 'There was always some thought behind them, and it is something I worked on from time to time.' Walters famously grew up in Midvale alongside fellow draftees Nic Naitanui and Chris Yarran and he revealed who was the best of the trio at the time. 'When I play, I always go back to those times. We tried to keep Nic Nat away from the footy as much as we could,' he said. 'But Chris Yarran was the best of us at that age by a country mile.' While Walters had plenty of accolades to look back on from captaining the Indigenous All Stars to All-Australian honours, Walters said he would trade it all for a flag. 'Looking back on it now, I'm proud of that but as a footy professional, you want that main goal which is the flag,' he said. 'As you come to the end, you do look back on it only, but it's mainly something for the family members.' However, Walters believes this year could end Fremantle's torment in their wait for a maiden flag and give Nat Fyfe a fairytale send-off after he announced his retirement at the end of the season earlier this week. 'I do think they can win it this year,' he said. '[Fyfe] single-handedly put the club on the map, especially early days. He was a superstar, you see what he does on the footy field, he goes hard at it. 'He's an all-time great and someone who was genuinely there for you as a person.'
