Hurricanes v Highlanders: Covid outbreak rocks Hurricanes during Super Rugby Pacific bye week
'Quite a few of us had Covid, so a few of us were quite crook,' said Aumua.
'It was more the front end of the week, so that was good.
'We could start getting into our remote training by ourselves at the back end and it didn't really affect us too much.'
With three games remaining, the Hurricanes currently occupy the final playoff spot in sixth after a recent run of good results.
They're unbeaten in their last three games, playing out a draw with the Western Force, followed by wins over the Brumbies and Chiefs.
History says the Hurricanes will extend their win streak, as the Highlanders haven't won in the capital since the 2015 grand final.
One player who is unlikely to face the Highlanders is winger Kini Naholo, with the Hurricanes still waiting to determine the severity of his knee injury.
Naholo went down clutching his right knee in a concerning non-contact incident early in the win over the Chiefs.
'It didn't look good, did it? We've got to go get some more scans,' said Mackintosh. 'When it's a non-contact injury, everyone looks at the TV in disappointment.
'We just hope for the best for Kini. He's a big part of our team.'
While Naholo is in doubt, first-five Brett Cameron is a chance of returning from an ACL injury during last year's NPC, having completed two club games.
Mackintosh feels the Hurricanes' form is no coincidence with most of their stars returning after missing the opening rounds of the season including Ruben Love and Billy Proctor.
'We had a ton of injuries at the start of the year but you can start to see the combinations click and we're very fortunate to have some guys coming back from injury,' said Mackintosh.
'That's going to be a week-to-week decision but at the moment we've backed off that block [of games with back-to-back wins] and some cohesion with our selections certainly helped us.'
Squads for this weekend's games are named at 4pm on Wednesday.

Blues Set For Semi Final Showdown In Christchurch
The Blues have made just one change to their starting line-up for Friday night's Super Rugby Pacific semi final against the Crusaders in Christchurch. Zarn Sullivan slots into the starting role at fullback in place of Corey Evans, with the remainder of the game day 23 unchanged from last week's win over the Chiefs. The Blues bring a strong and proven forward pack anchored by Patrick Tuipulotu, Dalton Papali'i, and Hoskins Sotutu, with set-piece strength and mobility around the park. In the backs, playmakers Finlay Christie, Beauden Barrett, AJ Lam and strike runners Rieko Ioane, Caleb Clarke and Mark Tele'a all add firepower and finals experience. The Blues are hunting a place in back-to-back Grand Finals after lifting the trophy in 2024, and will need to go through Christchurch where the Crusaders boast an impressive finals record. Head coach Vern Cotter said there is a good feeling within the group ahead of the do-or-die match-up. 'It's going to be a tough game and we need to be as accurate as possible. There's been good clarity this week and the boys are up for it. We're going to enjoy the contest,' he said. 'We're putting things together at the right time of the year. The guys know how to win big games and that's our goal again on Friday night.' The Blues enjoyed significant support from their fans against the Chiefs in Hamilton last weekend and look forward to fans coming out again to show their blue this Friday night in Christchurch. Former test lock Bryn Evans joins All Blacks as specialist lineout coach
Bryn Evans last played for the Highlanders three years ago. Photo: TREVOR COLLENS/AAP Former test lock Bryn Evans will join the All Blacks coaching team for 2025, as a specialist lineout coach. Just three years after retiring as a professional player, Evans has been rewarded for his contributions as an assistant coach at the Hurricanes and Hawke's Bay. He will join the All Blacks for their full 13-test calendar this year, before rejoining the Hurricanes for their 2026 campaign. All Blacks forward coach Jason Ryan said he and head coach Scott Robertson had been impressed by Evans' methods, which would provide a "point of difference". "He brings a unique skillset with his work with the Hurricanes and Hawke's Bay," Ryan said of Evans, 40. Bryn Evans debuts for the All Blacks against France. Photo: Simon Watts/Photosport "What I like is he's got a lateral thinking ability about him. He's an ex-lineout caller, and he had 12-plus years playing in the UK and France, which gives him a broad range of experience and an understanding of the northern hemisphere approach. "It's going to be a good complement for us. Bryn brings a skillset that I haven't got in terms of how they call lineouts, what pictures they see. "We believe it's a real point of difference having him, and making sure our skills are dialled in and leading the way in that area. "We believe having Bryn in this space, analysing us and the opposition, is just what we need." Evans played twice for New Zealand, coming off the bench in home tests against France in 2009. Meanwhile, in-form midfield back Peter Umaga-Jensen has announced he will leave the Super Rugby Pacific team with a year to run on his contract to take up a club deal in Japan. Peter Umaga-Jensen played one test for the All Blacks against Australia. Photo: John Cowpland/Actionpress The attack-minded Wellington provincial player debuted for the Hurricanes in 2018, going on to make 54 appearances in a tenure spoiled by injury. His only test appearance came off the bench against Australia in 2020, but he was unable to remain near the front of a logjam of contenders after that. Umaga-Jensen, 27, finished the current season on a high, scoring two tries in a final-round hammering of Moana Pasifika, including a brilliant 50m solo score. "I started here as a young fella chasing a dream and it's been an incredible ride ever since," he said. "I've made memories that will stay with me forever and built lifelong friendships that I'll always treasure. "One day, I hope I'll be sitting down with all the boys, sharing a beer and a laugh, as we look back on everything we experienced together." Umaga-Jensen has not disclosed which Japanese club he will join nor the length of his contract. Ex Hurricanes, All Blacks Sevens star Salesi Rayasi in Fiji test squad
Salesi Rayasi attacks for the Hurricanes against the Rebels in a Super Rugby Pacific quarterfinal in Wellington, 8 June, 2024. Photo: Photosport Former All Blacks Sevens and Hurricanes winger Salesi Rayasi has been included in the Fiji test squad after changing allegiance. Wellington-born Rayasi follows in the footsteps of his father Filipe, who played 13 times for Fiji in the 1990s. Rayasi, 28, has been named for Fiji for the first time in a 32-player squad for tests against Australia and Scotland next month. He played 50 games during his six seasons with the Hurricanes before taking up a contract with French club RC Vannes last year. He played in seven tournaments with the All Blacks Sevens between 2018 and 2020. Hawke's Bay halfback Sam Wye, 24, is also named by Fiji for the first time. Fiji coach Mick Byrne promised Australia and Scotland tough tests after naming a strong squad featuring 15 European-based players, Reuters reported. The Pacific islanders will play the Wallabies in Newcastle on 6 July in Australia's only warm-up match for the British & Irish Lions test series before hosting the Scots in Suva the following weekend. "We've announced a squad which is as strong as we're able to select, so that's excellent," Byrne said. "We're really looking forward to going over to Australia and putting on a great performance against the Wallabies and then coming home and playing against Scotland. "Both Australia and Scotland are established tier-one sides, and we know the level we need to rise to. This squad reflects our depth, strength, and we will give a performance that will make all Fijians proud." Alongside the 10 players who play their club rugby in France and five in England, the 32-man squad features a core of 13 players from the Fijian Drua Super Rugby team. "We've focused on combinations that give us both tactical adaptability and the trademark Fijian spirit," Byrne said. "We want to win but more importantly, we want to win playing our brand of rugby." Australian Byrne, who coached the Drua until last year, said Fiji's likely inclusion in the Nations Cup meant they needed to start thinking and acting like a tier-one country. "We now need to step up as an organisation and a group of players and address the fact that we are now tier one," he added. Fiji squad: Forwards - Eroni Mawi, Luke Tagi, Haereiti Hetet, Mesake Doge, Peni Ravai, Tevita Ikanivere, Samuel Mativesi, Kavaia Tagivetaua, Isoa Nasilasila, Mesake Vocevoce, Temo Mayanavanua, Setareki Turagacoke, Viliame Mata, Elia Canakaivata, Lekima Tagitagivalu, Albert Tuisue, Etonia Waqa, Motikai Murray. Backs - Simione Kuruvoli, Philip Baselala, Sam Wye, Caleb Muntz, Isaia Armstrong-Ravula, Vilimoni Botitu, Josua Tuisova, Iosefo Masikau Baleiwairiki, Sireli Maqala, Kalaveti Ravouvou, Ponipate Loganimasi, Jiuta Wainiqolo, Selesitino Ravutaumada, Salesi Rayasi. - RNZ Sport/Reuters
