DRDO, IAF successfully test indigenous Astra Missile with Radio Frequency Seeker from Su-30 MKI

Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Indian Air Force (IAF) successfully conducted the flight-test of indigenous Beyond Visual Range Air-to-Air missile (BVRAAM) 'Astra' equipped with indigenous Radio Frequency (RF) Seeker from Su-30 Mk-I platform off the coast of Odisha on Friday (July 11, 2025).
According to Ministry of Defence, during the tests, two launches were carried out against high-speed unmanned aerial targets at different ranges, target aspects and launch platform conditions. In both the cases, the missiles destroyed the targets with pin-point accuracy.
All subsystems performed as per expectations including the RF seeker which has been indigenously designed and developed by DRDO, the MoD added.
It further said that the flawless performance of the Astra weapon system was validated through flight data captured by Range Tracking instruments deployed by Integrated Test Range, Chandipur. These successful flight tests have re-established the accuracy and reliable performance of Astra weapon system with indigenous seeker.
'Astra BVRAAM has a range exceeding 100 kms and is equipped with state-of-the art guidance and navigation system,' said MoD.
In addition to various laboratories of DRDO, more than 50 public and private industries including Hindustan Aeronautics Limited have contributed towards successful realisation of the weapon system.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh complimented DRDO, IAF and industry involved in the design and development of RF seeker and stated that the successful testing of the missile with indigenous seeker is a major milestone in critical defence technology.
Secretary, Department of Defence R&D and Chairman, DRDO Dr Samir V Kamat congratulated all the teams involved during the successful flight-test.

New Delhi, Jul 25 (PTI) The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has successfully completed 138 projects, including air to surface missile 'Dhruvastra', anti-drone air-defence system and high-speed expendable aerial target 'Abhyas' during the last three years, the government said on Friday. Minister of State for Defence Sanjay Seth said this in a written response to a query in Lok Sabha. In his response, he also shared a tabulated year-wise data and cost incurred. From January 1 to December in 2023, 48 projects were completed; from January 1 to December in 2024, 60 projects were completed; and from January 1 till date in 2025, 30 projects were completed. In a statement later, the ministry of defence said during the last three years, the 'DRDO was sanctioned projects worth Rs 29,558.66 crore". Seth said some of the major projects completed inlcude — 'Nag Mk-2, Astra Mk-2, Dhruvastra-Air to Surface Missile, Anti-Tank Guided Missile for MBT Arjun MK-II, Solid Fuel Ducted Rocket Ramjet Technology for Air Launched Tactical Missiles, Anti-Drone Air-Defence System", among others. In a separate query, the defence ministry was asked whether the government has approved the new 'deep-tech and cutting-edge policies under the Technology Development Fund (TDF) Scheme. 'Yes, sir. An additional grant or corpus of Rs 500 cr has been approved by Hon'ble Raksha Mantri to cater for deep-tech and cutting edge projects as separate verticals under TDF," he said 'The process of the selection and identification of deep-tech projects has been initiated. Currently, nine projects are launched under this initiative by TDF and nine industries are engaged in four projects sanctioned through DIA-CoEs (DRDO Industry-Academia Centres of Excellence) under the Grants in Aid Scheme of DRDO," the minister said. Developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation, in collaboration with Adani Defence and Aerospace and Bharat Dynamics Limited, the V3 was released from an UAV, developed by Bengaluru-based Newspace Research Technologies, at the National Open Area Range (NOAR) test range in Kurnool, Andhra Pradesh, the Ministry of Defence said in a statement. The V3 can be equipped with multiple warheads, including Anti-armour, to destroy modern age armoured vehicles, penetration-cum-blast warhead with anti bunker application, and pre-fragmentation warhead. New Delhi: India has successfully conducted flight trials of the latest Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Launched Precision Guided Missile (ULPGM), the V3 version, marking a significant upgrade in India's defense capabilities. Weighing around 12.5 kg, it has a range of over 10 km, a significant upgrade over the previous V2 version, which had the daytime range of up to 4 km. This extended range allows for bigger standoff distances. Also known as the UAV Launched Missile- Extended Range (ULM-ER), the V3 version uses a fire-and-forget mechanism powered by a dual-thrust solid propulsion unit. It is equipped with a passive homing system using an imaging infrared (IR) seeker, allowing accurate target engagement in both day and night conditions. Boasting an accuracy of approximately 10 cm, it is capable of engaging both static and moving targets with high precision. The latest version operates fully autonomously, without the need of constant human oversight. This feature is advantageous in complex environments where real-time control may be limited. A two-way datalink enables updates and retargeting when required. Showcased at the Aero India 2025 show held in Bengaluru in February, the ULM-ER's main differences with V1, V2 lie in improvements in guidance systems, performance and range. Defence minister Rajnath Singh has congratulated DRDO and the industry partners among others for the development and successful trials of the ULPGM-V3 system. In a remarkable push to India's drone warfare capabilities, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) on Friday successfully test‑fired an indigenously developed UAV‑Launched Precision‑Guided Missile (ULPGM‑V3) at the National Open Area Range (NOAR) near Palakolanu in Orvakal mandal, Kurnool district. Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh announced the achievement on X, sharing a photograph from the test site. He lauded DRDO scientists, MSMEs, and start‑ups involved in the project, stating, 'This proves India's ability to master complex technologies and produce world‑class systems indigenously.' The missile, designed to neutralise fixed‑wing unmanned aerial targets with high accuracy, works on a fire‑and‑forget principle and is seen as a decisive step in next‑generation combat readiness. Developed on the earlier ULPGM‑V2 platform, the V3 variant underscores India's push for cost‑effective, precision weapons. The NOAR test range, spread over 2,200 acres, is one of DRDO's most advanced facilities. It has been the site of trials of cutting‑edge systems, including directed-energy weapons. Responding to the development, Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu tweeted: 'It is a proud moment that our State contributes to India's defence strength. The ULPGM‑V3 success reflects the true spirit of Aatmanirbhar Bharat.' Officials said the weapon will significantly sharpen India's drone combat strategy.
