World Metrology Day exhibition
His Excellency Abdulla bin Adel Fakhro, Minister of Industry and Commerce, attended an exhibition organised by the Ministry's Testing and Metrology Directorate at Bahrain Financial Harbour to mark World Metrology Day, observed annually on May 20.
The Minister highlighted the achievements of the National Measurement Laboratory, particularly its accreditation under the international ISO 17025 standard. He noted the advancement of the mass laboratory, which provides precise calibration services for weights up to 50 tonnes, the volume laboratory, which ensures accuracy in volume and flow measurements using advanced instruments, and the internationally and regionally accredited temperature laboratory.

As part of its ongoing efforts to develop the business environment and enhance compliance with regulatory decisions, the Ministry of Industry and Commerce has announced the launch of a new service in collaboration with several local banks. This service enables business owners to easily open a commercial bank account, contributing to the stability of commercial activities. Abdulla bin Adel Fakhro, Minister of Industry and Commerce, emphasised that this step reflects the Ministry's continuous commitment to establishing a flexible, transparent, and investment-friendly business environment. It also highlights the Ministry's dedication to providing efficient services that facilitate doing business and support business owners in complying with relevant regulations. He noted that the Ministry will continue to develop more initiatives to support the national economy. The Minister added that this new service is part of an integrated set of initiatives aimed at simplifying procedures, achieving the highest levels of legislative compliance, and enhancing the efficiency of government services provided to the commercial sector, thereby boosting Bahrain's competitiveness regionally and internationally. This initiative comes in line with the implementation of Ministerial Decision (43) of 2024 regarding payment regulations for commercial transactions of business establishments, which mandates all commercial establishments to open a unified commercial bank account for their financial transactions and provide approved electronic payment methods that support transparency and digitisation in commercial activities. To simplify the process, a direct service point has been established on the second floor of the Bahrain Financial Harbour, near the Bahrain Investors Centre. UAE Takes Legal Action Against 30 Domestic Worker Recruiters
The UAE is penalising domestic worker recruitment offices over rule breaking and violations of guidelines. The Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE) has taken legal action against 30 domestic worker recruitment offices across the UAE after confirming their involvement in 89 violations flagged during the first three months of 2025. The measures form part of the Ministry's ongoing efforts to implement its integrated field and digital monitoring system, which aims to identify and address any violations by domestic worker recruitment offices and ensure their compliance with relevant legislation. MoHRE supports the system with prompt responses to all complaints regarding these offices submitted to it by employers and families. The Ministry said the recorded violations primarily involves failure to refund all or part of the recruitment fees to employers within the legally specified timeframe of two weeks from the date the domestic worker returned to the recruitment office, or from the date the worker was reported to have stopped working. Other violations include failure to display the MoHRE-approved service package pricing clearly and visibly for clients. The MoHRE stressed that it would show no leniency in taking legal action against any domestic worker recruitment office with verified violations, cautioning that repeated offences by any such office will lead to strict penalties, including potential license cancellation. The Ministry commended compliant domestic worker recruitment offices across the country, of which there are currently 126, for their adherence to the laws and regulations governing the provision of services and packages to customers, which serves to enhance their competitiveness and business growth. MoHRE urged clients to ensure they only engage with licensed domestic worker recruitment offices in the UAE, in order to safeguard their rights and benefit from the services provided by authorised offices. The Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation also encouraged the public to report any harmful practices or violations via its official communication channels and digital platforms, or by contacting the Labour Claims And Advisory Centre on 80084, especially in cases involving failure to refund full of partial recruitment fees within the legal timeframe, among other breaches. The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to registering employer feedback and complaints concerning domestic worker recruitment offices and emphasised that its inspection and oversight system remains fully equipped to deal with violations firmly, and transparently in the UAE. Kuwait Mulls Raising Government Fees On 10,000 Services
Kuwait is considering a major revision of fees across more than 10,000 government services in a move aimed at boosting fiscal sustainability and strengthening non-oil revenues. The proposal, discussed at a high-level meeting at the National Library Theater, follows a Cabinet directive to reassess cost recovery mechanisms throughout the public sector. According to sources familiar with the matter, the Ministry of Finance presented a detailed review estimating that the potential fee adjustments could generate KD400 million ($1.3 billion) to KD 500 million annually for the state treasury. The proposed changes would cover a broad spectrum of services, ranging from the issuance of official certificates to the provision of public utilities. The Ministry outlined a three-pillar framework for the reassessment: Calculating the actual cost of service delivery, setting appropriate adjustment margins based on service type and importance, and evaluating the social impact to ensure affordability and equity. Each government entity has been instructed to conduct its own cost review and submit recommendations to the Ministry of Finance. These findings will be consolidated and presented to the Council of Ministers for final approval. While boosting non-oil income is a core goal, officials have stressed that maintaining access to essential services and preserving social balance will guide the final decision.
