Central Illinois Airports enforcing Real ID policy

Yahoo08-05-2025

PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD) — The Real ID deadline is here, and airports in central Illinois and across the U.S. have started to enforce this policy.
A Real ID is a security measure 20 years in the making, as Congress passed the Real ID Act in 2005 following a recommendation from the 9/11 Commission for the Federal Government to 'set standards for the issuance of sources of identification, such as driver's licenses.'
'It's been coming for a long time, but they finally drew a line in the sand and said, 'Look, we're not going to extend the deadline any more,'' said Gene Olson, director of airports for the General Wayne A. Downing Peoria International Airport.
If you don't have a Real ID, it's not the end of the world. However, you may want to be extra prepared and get to the airport earlier.
'You can still get on a plane without a real ID,' Olson said, 'but it will take extra time because they're going to take steps to verify who you are. It may take as much as an hour for that to happen.'
Most airports are operating smoothly on the first day of the REAL ID requirement
Central Illinois Regional Airport in Bloomington is enforcing this policy as well, and Melissa Beaver, director of marketing and communications, said the implementation has gone smoothly. But, some people are still worried.
'I think a lot of passengers have been worried because they haven't been able to get in line to get the Real IDs,' Beaver said.
The real goal of the Real ID is to make sure travelers can get to their destinations safely.
'No one wants you to miss your flight or not travel,' Beaver said. 'So just be prepared with extra forms of ID and extra levels of screening.'
If you only have a temporary Real ID, that won't suffice. You will need the plastic Real ID card or you will need to bring your previous license, that isn't expired, with you.
PIA is hosting a mobile DMV event on Tuesday for people to get the identification cards if they haven't yet, and it is by appointment only.

Japan's Princess Kako addresses Brazil's Congress, meets with Lula in presidential palace

BRASILIA, Brazil (AP) — Japan's Princess Kako of Akishino, a niece of Emperor Naruhito, was welcomed on Wednesday by Brazil's President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva for a private ceremony on the latest leg of her 11-day tour of the South American nation. The younger daughter of Crown Prince Fumihito and Crown Princess Kiko also addressed Congress and thanked Brazilians for hosting Japanese immigrants for more than a century. Her trip, which started on June 5, marks the 130th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries. 'The efforts of the Japanese who came, and the Brazilians who went to Japan, are deepening our bilateral relationship of friendship,' Kako told Brazilian lawmakers. 'I hope that the relationship between the two countries is a long lasting one.' Congress speaker Hugo Motta told the princess he hopes Brazil's ethanol 'can help Japan reduce its dependency on fossil fuels.' Brazil has the largest population of people of Japanese descent in the world, estimated at about 2.7 million. About half of those live in Sao Paulo state, official figures show, where the princess last week received the state's highest honor from Gov. Tarcisio de Freitas. Emperor Naruhito has no male children, which makes his brother Akishino, Princess Kako's father, the first successor in line. Japan's tradition does not allow women to take the throne. Princess Kako will arrive in Rio de Janeiro on Friday, where she will visit the Christ the Redeemer statue and a museum of Japanese immigration. The last part of her trip will take place in the city of Foz do Iguacu, where the world famous Iguacu falls are located. Error! Sorry, there was an error processing your request. Nearly half of Texans don't have passports

About 45% of Texans who are U.S. citizens don't have a valid passport as of 2024, per estimates from the think tank Center for American Progress. Why it matters: A valid passport is one of the few forms of accepted identification for international travel — and it's also required for domestic air travel if you don't have a Real ID. By the numbers: Of the roughly 27 million U.S. citizens living in Texas, 12 million are currently without a valid passport — a gap that could create headaches for domestic travelers and limit mobility abroad.

Sorry, you can't use your Costco membership card to get through TSA

"Can't fly on hotdogs and hope." That's according to the Transportation Security Administration, which recently posted on social media to let Americans know they cannot, in fact, use their Costco membership cards in place of a Real ID. "We love hotdogs & rotisserie chickens as much as the next person but plz stop telling people their Costco card counts as a REAL ID because it absolutely does not," TSA said in an X post on June 4. In a follow-up post on Instagram, the agency said a Costco Gold Star Membership card might get you a 48-pack of toilet paper and other goodies the warehouse retailer is known for, but "it won't get you through a TSA checkpoint." "We get it, you're a bulk-buying boss, the executive of excess, the sultan of samples. But unless your $1.50 hot dog has a passport, you're gonna need a REAL ID or other acceptable form of ID to fly," the post said. The posts from TSA, which is known to have a tongue-in-cheek social media presence, came after Real ID requirements were set to take effect in May. Americans were scrambling ahead of the May 7 deadline to secure a Real ID, which the Department of Homeland Security had previously said would be required to fly domestically from that date. However, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem announced that Americans would still be able to fly without a Real ID for the time being. TSA's website currently says that travelers without a Real ID — or an alternative form of acceptable identification, like a passport — will be notified of their noncompliance and could be subject to additional screening at the airport. list.
