Petronas commits to staff welfare amid job cuts, pledges competitive separation scheme

Last week, Petronas announced that the company would reduce its headcount by more than 5,000 people as it looks to cut costs due to falling crude prices.
PETALING JAYA : Petronas has reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding employee welfare amid a company-wide restructuring exercise that will cut about 10% of its workforce, including by offering competitive separation packages.
The firm said that to support employees affected by this exercise, a comprehensive transition programme had been put in place, ensuring that every decision is made with fairness, respect, and professionalism.
'Impacted employees will receive a market-competitive separation package – one that exceeds the minimum statutory requirement,' it said in a statement.
The energy producer also said that beyond financial support, affected employees would also receive emotional support services, career coaching and job search assistance, financial planning guidance, as well as access to programmes for medical assistance, upskilling, and reskilling.
'The packages and benefits are structured based on employees' years of service and may vary depending on employee category and eligibility,' it added.
Last Thursday, Petronas president and group CEO Tengku Muhammad Taufik Aziz announced that the company would reduce its headcount by more than 5,000 people as it looks to cut costs due to falling crude prices.
He said those affected would be informed in stages through next year and that a hiring freeze would remain in place until December 2026.
Petronas today said it had formed a transition council and people development committees to facilitate talent mapping and ensure that placement decisions are made collectively, guided by established platforms.
'This process also follows the necessary legal requirements and adopts the required industrial relations practices,' it said.
The firm added that it had engaged with the relevant departments on labour and industrial relations under the human resources ministry to ensure compliance with statutory requirements.
Petronas is also collaborating with the Social Security Organisation through MyFutureJobs to explore placement opportunities for eligible affected employees in other sectors.
The potential placement of affected staff with various other GLCs, including oil and gas companies, is being explored, Petronas said.
'Additionally, the company's entrepreneurship programme run under the Petronas Innovation Garage offers a guided pathway into business ownership for those exploring alternative career paths.'

Revisit true meaning of federalism, those critical of Sarawak reclaiming autonomy told

Wilfred Yap – Photo by Chimon Upon KUCHING (June 11): Those who feel threatened by Sarawak's rightful autonomy should revisit the true meaning of federalism because a strong Malaysia must be built on mutual respect and genuine partnership among all its constituent states, including Sarawak and Sabah, said Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap. In this respect, he defended the state's growing role in managing its own gas resources as he reminded critics, particularly politicians from Peninsular Malaysia, that Sarawak's push for autonomy was not about defiance, but about fairness and reclaiming rights that were promised to Sarawak under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63). 'Our actions reflect this very spirit that is a commitment to a more balanced and equitable Malaysia for all,' he added in a statement yesterday, in which he was responding to recent remarks by several Malayan politicians who attempted to link the federal government's recognition of Sarawak's role as the sole gas aggregator to the retrenchment of some 5,000 Petronas employees. Yap thus described such accusations as 'baseless and misleading', stating that they either stemmed from ignorance or 'a deliberate distortion of MA63'. He also said that it was irresponsible to suggest that Sarawak's rightful empowerment was a political ploy to appease so-called 'threats'. 'These claims insult Sarawakians' intelligence and misrepresent our legitimate aspirations for greater control over our resources,' he said. Yap also stressed that Sarawak's demands were constitutionally grounded and long overdue, having been sidelined for decades since the formation of Malaysia. He also rebutted the suggestion that empowering Petros, the state-owned oil and gas company, could jeopardise national interests, calling such views 'insulting, and a mischaracterisation of Sarawak's pursuit of economic self-reliance'. On the issue of Petronas retrenchments, Yap pointed to a statement by the company's president and chief executive officer Tengku Muhammad Taufik, who made it clear that the layoffs were part of a broader restructuring in response to global energy transitions and not because of Sarawak's growing role in the industry. He called attempts to blame Sarawak for the move 'disingenuous and politically motivated'. 'Sarawak's decision to empower Petros has already opened up new opportunities in investment, job creation, and economic development. 'If certain critics from across the South China Sea truly cared about the people's welfare, they would support and not sabotage Sarawak's progress,' he said. federalism lead Sarawak autonomy Wilfred Yap

Upcoming summit in Kuching to highlight green mobility

Hallman (seated, centre) and his committee members promote the 'Green Mobility Innovation Summit 2025', set to be held in Kuching this Sept 8 and 9.7 KUCHING (June 11): The Ministry of Education, Innovation and Talent Development Sarawak, in collaboration with the Brunei-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East Asean Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA) and Sarawak Skills, will be holding the 'Green Mobility Innovation Summit 2025' at Imperial Hotel Kuching, this Sept 8 and 9. Themed 'Driving the Future: Talent, Innovation and Sustainability in Green Mobility', the event is set to propel regional sustainable transport and green economy agenda. 'This year's summit theme reflects the urgent need to develop forward-looking strategies for a greener, more sustainable transport ecosystem in Southeast Asia,' said Sarawak Skills in a statement yesterday. 'The event is set to bring together policymakers, industry leaders, educators, and innovators from across the region to share expertise, foster collaboration, and promote the development of sustainable transportation solutions. 'It serves as a key component of the BIMP-EAGA Vision 2025 initiative, which aims to enhance regional connectivity and sustainable development. 'Central to this vision is the promotion of eco-friendly practices in infrastructure development, efforts to improve climate resilience, and the implementation of smart city initiatives designed to reduce carbon emissions and support environmental sustainability,' it added. In the same statement, Sarawak Skills executive director Hallman Sabri remarked: 'The significance of gathering various experts and delegates in the field of green mobility lies in its potential to nurture talent for sustainable transportation – an objective that is not merely a local priority, but a shared regional goal under the BIMP-EAGA Vision 2025. 'Therefore, the summit serves as an essential platform for aligning strategies, building competencies, and fostering regional cooperation in the transition toward a green economy.' The Green Mobility Innovation Summit 2025 is expected to feature more than 30 distinguished speakers and moderators from all across Asean, the UK, China, and Australia. Discussions will revolve around several key themes including 'Talent Development Through Education and Training', 'Innovative Technologies', 'Governance', and 'Global Collaboration'. 'The summit is deeply aligned with Sarawak's broader commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable development. 'As outlined in the Post Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030, the Sarawak government is prioritising the green economy as a strategic growth area. 'The state has already made significant strides in clean energy and sustainable mobility. 'Among these efforts is Sarawak's pioneering work in hydrogen fuel technology, including the introduction of Southeast Asia's first hydrogen-powered buses,' said Hallman in the statement. He added that the state was also expanding its electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure and advancing smart city development in the urban centres, including Kuching. 'Additionally, Sarawak is investing heavily in TVET (technical and vocational education and training) to equip its workforce with the skills needed for the green and digital economy. 'These state-level initiatives position Sarawak as an ideal host for the summit and underscore its leadership in driving innovation and sustainability in the region. 'The organisers invite all participants to be part of this landmark event. 'Opportunities for collaboration are available across multiple areas, including speaker engagements, delegate participation, exhibition showcases, and joint promotional initiatives,' he pointed out. Supported by Business Events Sarawak (BE Sarawak), the Tribe Legacy Sarawak Campaign, and Sarawak–More to Discover, the 'Green Mobility Innovation Summit 2025' presents a unique platform to connect with thought leaders, explore cutting-edge technologies, and contribute to shaping a more sustainable future for the region.
