Council looking at scrapping village's 50mph limit after 'years' of campaigns

A 50mph speed limit through a Welsh village could be reduced after "years" of safety concerns being raised. Councillors have previously considered a petition calling for a reduction in the speed limit at Square and Compass, north Pembrokeshire.
The petition sought to reduce the current 50mph limit on the A487 Fishguard-St Davids road. Launched by local resident Emma Tannahill the petition garnered support both online, with 127 signatures on the council's website, and offline with an additional 152 signatures on paper.
Ms Tannahill is campaigning for a reduction of the speed limit to 40mph.

The petition stated: "We call on Pembrokeshire County Council to reduce the current speed limit of 50mph on the main road (A487) through Square and Compass as it is a serious safety concern for the community.
"This road is home to many families with young children."

It highlighted the risks posed to children, noting: "A school bus from Croes Goch Primary School has a drop-off point on this stretch of road which further exacerbates the risk of accidents. In addition there are young families that cycle to and from Croes Goch primary school along this road.
"This section of road also serves as a thoroughfare for traffic to and from Croes Goch petrol station and Torbant caravan site, both of which see a high volume of traffic and pedestrian activity. The high speeds of traffic on the main road is a risk to those coming in and out of these sites.
"In addition to the petrol station and caravan site the area is also home to a pub and a public bus stop, both of which are situated next to this 50mph stretch of road.
"Lowering the speed limit would greatly enhance safety for pedestrians and cyclists."
During the scrutiny meeting committee chair Cllr Mark Carter revealed he had driven through the area after receiving the petition and found it "bizarre" that it had a 50mph limit. He said similar sections of road in other villages had 40mph and even 20mph limits.
A public consultation has now been launched with local member Cllr Neil Prior stating: "Following years of work and campaigning Pembrokeshire County Council is formally consulting on reducing the speed limit from 50 to 40mph from Mesur-y-dorth to the bottom end of Square and Compass.

"Thank you to all who have helped with this and I hope that it will see a reduction in speed and an improvement in the quality of people's lives as a result."
The consultation document states: "The review concluded that the current limit should be reduced from 50mph to 40mph to maintain a safe and consistent speed distribution along this length of the A487 and ensure the safety of all turning movements from the accesses, junctions and through traffic."

Officers established that an artic lorry travelling in the eastbound carriageway had collided with two vehicles that were travelling in the westbound carriageway. The lorry driver, A 58-year-old man, was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving. He has been released under investigation whilst inquiries continue. One person was airlifted to hospital in Stoke by the Air Ambulance. Two people were taken to Ysbyty Glan Clwyd by ambulance, with the other being taken to Stoke via ambulance. The road remained closed in both directions for several hours whilst officers from the forensic collision investigation unit carried out their initial investigation. One lane in both directions of the A55 re-opened shortly before midnight. North Wales Police are now appealing for any witnesses to come forward to assist with their investigation. An additional thirteen Electric Vehicles (EVs) have been deemed eligible for the scheme, bringing this week's total to seventeen newly included models. This enhancement is part of the Government's £650 million initiative aimed at making EV ownership more affordable and straightforward, putting money back into the pockets of hardworking individuals, while also bolstering jobs and growth under the Plan for Change. In a bid to accelerate the transition to EVs, the Government is investing a whopping £4.5 billion, solidifying the UK's standing as a global frontrunner in EV adoption. With Britain projected to be Europe's largest EV market by 2024 and sales already up nearly a third this year, the future of motoring in the UK looks increasingly electric. Customers will see the discounts applied automatically at the point of sale, with no paperwork necessary. The scheme is capped at vehicles costing up to £37,000, aiming to support the most affordable options. "This is about backing drivers, putting money back into people's pockets and creating the jobs and growth that will drive Britain forward, delivering on our Plan for Change." In the coming weeks, as manufacturers' applications are evaluated against the scheme's sustainability standards, more models are expected to be approved. The ECG forms part of a hefty £4.5 billion investment from the Government to accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles, simultaneously stimulating industry and fostering growth as part of the Plan for Change. Given that high upfront costs are often a deterrent to purchasing EVs, these discounts aim to reduce the price of models so they align more closely with their petrol and diesel equivalents. With over 82,000 public charging points currently available – equating to one new addition every half an hour – and more than 100,000 planned for the near future, the Government is constructing the infrastructure drivers require to confidently make the switch. Moreover, to facilitate the transition to electric vehicles, the latest £63 million charging package includes funding to simplify home charging for motorists and enable them to run their EVs for as little as 2p per mile. RAC head of policy Simon Williams said: 'Another wave of cars qualifying for the Government's revamped Electric Car Grant is yet more welcome news. It's also very positive to see other manufacturers that don't meet the grant's green production targets lowering their prices. "Those looking to make the switch now have a wider choice of better value vehicles than ever before. This can only help speed up the transition to electric motoring." In collaboration with the industry, the Department for Transport is swiftly making these discounts available to drivers, providing guidance to facilitate manufacturers' applications. This initiative coincides with the Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) Mandate, obliging manufacturers to progressively sell a higher percentage of zero-emission vehicles each year. Recent amendments to the mandate offer the industry the certainty and stability it has been seeking, while vital trade agreements with the US, India, and the European Union bolster the UK's automotive sector and safeguard jobs. John Veichmanis, CEO at Carwow Group: "The confirmation that more affordable, practical EVs have been approved for the Electric Car Grant is exactly what the market needs.
