Combat readiness of Chinese defence equipment remains highly doubtful

The F-7BGI fighter jet of Bangladesh Air Force (BAF) that crashed earlier this week into the Milestone School and College campus killing dozens, mostly children, is a single-engine, lightweight fighter aircraft designed and manufactured by Chengdu Aircraft Corporation (CAC) of China. It is considered a modernized version of Chengdu F-7, also known as J-7 whose lineage can be traced back to the Soviet Mig-21. The People's Liberation Army Airforce (PLAAF) and other countries have continued to upgrade F-7 to F-7BGI for training and limited combat roles. China officially terminated production of the F-7 series in 2013 and Bangladesh bought the final match of these aircraft that same year. PLAAF decommissioned the entire J-7 fleet by the end of 2023.
Since 1992, the BAF has recorded 27 fighter aircraft, including trainer crashes. Further, from 2005 till date, BAF lost 11 aircraft in crashes, of these seven were Chinese aircraft, three Russian and one a Czech aircraft. Most of the crashes involved Chinese-origin aircraft. Over the years, the BAF has lost Wing Commanders, Squadron Leaders, Flight Lieutenants, Flying Officers, Warrant Officers and Cadet pilots. Surprisingly, despite the outdated equipment, BAF still continues to seal new defence deals with the Chinese.
Bangladesh imports about 85 per cent of defence equipment from China. This includes Tanks (MBT-2000, Type 59, Type 69), artillery systems, and small arms for the army; Frigates, missile boats, and submarines (Ming-class) for the Navy and fighter jets (F-7 BGI, K-8W training jets) for its Air Force.
Pakistan too is dependent on China for more than 85 per cent of its military requirement. Despite Pakistan's financial constraints and reliance on foreign loans, Pakistan has spent a lot of money over the last five years to buy Chinese defence equipment to modernise its own military. Pakistan has a significant inventory of Chinese-origin weapons and systems, including air defence systems, J-10 and JF-17 fighters, submarines, and warships.
Between 2020-24, China had supplied 81 per cent of Pakistan's total arms imports, making Beijing Islamabad's largest arms supplier. This included fighter jets JF-17 Thunder (co-developed), J-10C Firebird; submarines like Hangor-class (Type 039B/041); Type 054A/P Frigates (Tughril-class); Air Defence Systems (ADS) HQ-9 Long-Range Air Defence, LY-80 (HQ-16 export version); Tanks: VT-4 Main Battle Tanks (Haider); Artillery: SH-15 155mm howitzers and Drones: Unmanned Combat Aerial Vehicles (UCAVs) like CH-4 'Rainbow'. Wing Loong II and Azmat-class Fast Attack Crafts vessels, equipped with C-802A anti-ship missiles, have also been built with the Chinese assistance. At the same time, Pakistan continues to lean towards Chinese platforms.
India's 'Operation Sindoor' post-spine-chilling attack on tourists in Pahalgam on April 22 by Pakistan-based terror group The Resistance Front (TRF), practically neutralised Pakistani ADS at a number of locations across the border.
Chinese weapons and China's grand experiment to turn Pakistan into a testing ground for its military hardware backfired spectacularly, with Indian systems outperforming the Chinese ones. HQ-9 Chinese ADS failed to intercept Indian missiles. India struck Pakistan's Nur Khan Airbase Chaklala Cantonment in Rawalpindi, considered to be critical in Pakistan's military infrastructure.
Importantly, China had helped Pakistan in adjusting its satellite coverage over India during 'Operation Sindoor', which Pakistan acknowledged. In a major ELINT win, India was able to capture unique signal emissions and system behaviour linked to the Pakistan Air Force's J-10C and JF-17 multirole fighter jets, as well as PL 15 beyond-visual-range air-to-air and HQ-7 and HQ-9 surface-to-air missile systems, which were frontline Chinese-origin weapon systems.
Nigerian Air Force too had serious problems with the F-7Ni aircraft which was involved in accidents, including mid-air collision in 2018 during air display rehearsal. Seven aircraft were marked for high-tech maintenance in China including two aircraft slated for a life extension programme with the Chinese support within Nigeria. Similarly, several African countries including Algeria, Egypt, Morocco and Jordan have had difficulties with the sub-standard Chinese Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). Jordan's Royal Jordanian Air Force (RJAF) was dissatisfied with the performance of the Chinese CH-4B drones in 2016 and subsequently put them up for sale in 2019.
China is happy selling its defence equipment to developing countries or to the least developed countries. Chinese defence firms sell the equipment indiscriminately. However, to maintain its dominance in the military sphere at the global level, China never allows export of advanced variants of defence equipment. Moreover, China has deftly sold defence equipment to governments and regimes without any regard for human rights violations or degree of stability or intentions and little accountability. The developing countries continue to operate these faulty Chinese defence equipment causing fatal accidents.
China's Military-Industrial Complex (MIC) plays a crucial role in forming the defence and security landscape of other buyer nations. China is adept in using espionage to acquire defence technology. Recently, the US Department of Defence (DoD) had accused Beijing in this regard.
China is the fourth largest arms exporter globally. It holds 5.8 per cent share of the global arms bazaar. In 2010, China was the world's second largest arms importer. China's sudden leap in every domain - fighter jets, warships, missile systems, space technology and drones - has deeply upset several countries. China's defence equipment exports are primarily concentrated in Asia. A substantial portion of China's arms exports is to Pakistan.
China's defence exports touched a 10-year high in 2022 with USD $3.24 billion. However, China continues to face challenges in meeting its sophisticated quality defence exports equipment spearheaded by President Xi Jinping, aimed at especially supporting China's rise as a global military power. China offers weapons at a favourable low price, including credits and soft loans compared to the Western countries.
The rise of China's in-house defence industry has resulted in lesser quality control. Furthermore, developing countries have few alternatives and affordability is the key issue. Inferior technology weapons, inconsistent performance, defective components, and insufficient after-sales service have become synonymous with China's military hardware. These issues have damaged and will continue to destroy China's reputation as an arms exporter.

Earlier this month, it was announced that India is resuming the issuance of tourist visas for Chinese citizens. Just before this, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval visited China for meetings of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar travelled to China shortly after and met with Chinese President Xi Jinping. This was the first such meeting since the Galwan Valley clash of 2020. This is a strategic signal from India amidst new circumstances created by some of the most powerful states in the existing international system. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD India's recent uptick in diplomatic ties with China is not a concession; instead, it reflects India's calculated posture of strategic signalling. With the bilateral trade agreement with the US currently stalled and the global economic landscape shifting rapidly, India is engaging with China not to resolve old disputes but to gain strategic leverage through the creation of optics. Since late 2024, India and China have entered into a deliberate but structural phase to engage with each other to reduce tensions along the Himalayan border. After experiencing four years of protected standoff following the deadly Galwan face-off, the diplomatic levers have shifted. The latest phase began with an important breakthrough on October 21, 2024, when both countries agreed on a border pact, letting each other patrol at previously restricted friction points like Depsang and Demchok. The agreement helped significantly in restoring trust and establishing communication between two powerful neighbours. After this agreement there has been a flurry of diplomatic exchanges between both the powers. These consistent meetings, though, suggest a pattern in which both nations are trying to reduce mistrust and restore a dialogue to prevent further crisis. Both nations are engaging at a greater pace than they ever were doing. For India, this is about asserting sovereignty while avoiding conflict. For China, it is about projecting stability along its southern frontier as it faces growing pressure in the Western Pacific and domestic economic headwinds. Yet the question remains: Why is India doing this now when the Line of Actual Control (LAC) is still contested? New Delhi is pursuing economic de-risking, not decoupling from China. Despite all the geopolitical friction, India remains deeply entwined with Chinese capital, tech, and rare earth dependencies. India acknowledges this fact and is opting for stability management. Chasing a compartmentalised relationship that seeks to discuss boundary questions without foreclosing economic activities. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD However, India finds itself in utmost precarity when China also responded with bans and curbs on rare earth materials. Additionally, in an attempt to limit technology transfers to India, along with skilled workers, the Chinese government has recalled hundreds of Chinese engineers and technicians from Foxconn's iPhone factories in India. Foxconn is meeting the shortages by bringing in Taiwanese technicians. India is neither unaware nor unresponsive. Similarly, the suspicion runs through: Will this ongoing round of discussions succeed in producing lasting peace, or is it merely a tactical de-escalation? Historical experience suggests otherwise. The Galwan incursions occurred in the backdrop of the Wuhan summit in 2018 and the Chennai informal summit in 2019, which were also celebrated as turning points. Also, the fundamental issue, the differing perceptions of the LAC, remains unresolved. Confidence-building is underway, but confidence itself remains fragile. The recent diplomatic engagements in Beijing, including discussions on 'de-escalation' and 'normalising people-to-people exchange', occur against a backdrop where India perceives the complete resolution of the border issue as a prerequisite for normal relations, while China prefers to compartmentalise the border issue, pushing for cooperation while maintaining territorial claims and even military posturing. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD While both sides have expressed a desire for a 'positive trajectory' and optimism for 'stable and constructive ties', the talks were steered towards managing disagreements rather than fundamentally resolving them. Opening direct air services and the Kailash Manasarovar yatra are positive steps but do not address the core issue of strategic and territorial disputes. Beijing, on the other hand, strongly objected to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's public birthday greeting to the Dalai Lama in July 2025, reiterating its opposition to any official engagement with the Tibetan spiritual leader. While both nations appear to agree on the need for immediate stability, their long-term goals diverge. India seeks a restoration of the pre-2020 border status and a rules-based order in Asia and elsewhere; China, meanwhile, aims to assert regional influence with and without direct confrontation, and examples range from Doklam to Galwan to China trying to wipe out the identity of Tibet, building the biggest dam on the Yarlung Tsanpo to throttle the downstream Brahmaputra River in India, and so on. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Operation Sindoor also served as an indirect test of tensions between India and China. Beijing's response, calling India's retaliation against terrorism 'unfortunate', caused a rift in New Delhi. While urging 'restraint on all sides", China notably refrained from denouncing the terror provocation or addressing India's security concerns. After Operation Sindoor, the deputy chief of army staff for India also issued a warning on Sino-Pakistan collusion during the operation. If there's one significant shift in India's approach, it is a more layered diplomacy—engaging China bilaterally but also within the framework of multilateral forums like the SCO and Brics, while continuing strategic balancing elsewhere. It is not containment nor alignment, but calibrated coexistence. For Beijing too, stabilising ties with Delhi serves a larger goal: preventing a second front while managing the US pressure in East Asia. Given that the US has lifted export restrictions on Exploratory Data Analysis (EDA) tools and software bound for Chinese buyers, and the EU is desperately engaging with China, there is no clarity on whether India can ever count on Western powers. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD India understands China as a threat and has been at the receiving end of more conflicts, military and otherwise, with China than any other country in the world. However, it is also a neighbour and a powerful one, with which India will have to manage its relationship. There is no better way in such a complex scenario except diplomacy and optics. Pakistani F-16s are grappling with serious crises, which means in the coming years, the Pakistan Air Force will be forced to ground its entire fleet. News18 has reliably learnt that Pakistan's Air Force is confronting a substantial operational strain due to persistent engine reliability issues affecting its aging F-16 fleet. The F-16s, long regarded as the backbone of the PAF's aerial capability, depend on Pratt & Whitney F100 engines—specifically the F100-PW-200 and the F100-PW-229. Over the last three years, dozens of these engines have been rejected, primarily due to technical faults, wear from years of service, and a crippling shortage of spare parts. The reliability crisis is compounded by the United States' strict export controls governing the sale and supply of OEM spare parts. Recent financial difficulties have led to delayed or suspended payments owed to the US Foreign Military Sales programme, which, in turn, has halted the delivery of critical engine components and maintenance kits to Pakistan. This has pushed Pakistan's only advanced, all-weather multirole fighter jets towards potential grounding and limited their availability for operational deployment—a severe blow to national air defence. The core of the issue lies not only in the advanced age and wear of Pakistan's F-16s, but also the inflexible restrictions imposed by the US, both in terms of monitoring their use and in strictly regulating the flow of replacement parts. Under the most recent US-Pakistan agreement, the F-16s are subject to close American oversight, permitted to operate only from designated bases and explicitly restricted in their role. This further aggravates the challenge of keeping the fleet airborne since any deviation or friction in this arrangement can prompt delays in logistical flows and, by extension, reduce operational readiness. Operational consequences are serious: dozens of F-16 airframes are grounded at any time awaiting repairs or parts, eroding the PAF's ability to maintain effective patrols or respond quickly to crises. The operational gap is now sparking a greater reliance on the JF-17 Thunder, a jointly developed Sino-Pakistani combat jet. However, the JF-17, powered by Russian RD-93 engines, is also struggling with its own maintenance and spare parts issues due to sanctions on Russia and reported technical limitations, leaving it an imperfect substitute. Ultimately, Pakistan is now caught in a strategically vulnerable position, with the operational readiness of its premier fighter force diminished by aging technology, insufficient access to spare parts, and financial as well as geopolitical hurdles. Without a reliable solution to its F-16 engine woes—either through fresh US cooperation or a viable alternative—the PAF faces an untenable strain that limits its deterrence and the flexibility crucial to its national security posture. Pakistan Defence Procurement from China & Turkey UAV and Drone Procurement via NASTP The PAF, through the National Aerospace Science & Technology Park (NASTP), is actively expanding its unmanned aerial capabilities. Procurement is being managed via M/S Gwalpha Tech Pvt. Ltd., a domestic company handling integration and sourcing of aerospace systems. These procurements reflect PAF's growing emphasis on autonomous platforms for intelligence gathering and precision strikes. The involvement of a local company under NASTP highlights Pakistan's move toward domestic capacity building in defence tech. Defence Procurement from China (NORINCO) Pakistan's long-standing defence partnership with China continues with large-scale procurement of artillery, armoured support systems, and ordnance. NORINCO (China North Industries Corporation) is the primary supplier. This procurement strengthens Pakistan Army's long-range artillery and battlefield mobility while reinforcing dependence on Chinese platforms for mechanised warfare. The integration of support systems enhances operational longevity of Chinese equipment like the VT4 MBT. Defence Collaboration and Procurement from Turkey Pakistan's strategic defence ties with Turkey have expanded across naval, aerospace, and drone technologies. The partnership is marked by co-development, technology transfer, and joint manufacturing initiatives. Turkish platforms like the MILGEM corvettes and Bayraktar drones offer Pakistan critical capabilities in naval operations and unmanned warfare. The stalled T-129 deal highlights the limits of cooperation under US export control, but ongoing industrial collaboration underlines long-term potential in co-production. Remove Ads Dharamshala: The construction of a mega hydropower dam by China on the Brahmaputra River in Tibet has triggered serious concerns among Tibetan experts in exile, who warn of its potential impact on the environment, regional geopolitics, and the livelihoods of downstream countries like India and proposed dam, expected to be larger than the Three Gorges Dam, is coming up in the seismically active Medog region. Experts say the project could alter the river's natural flow and place downstream nations at risk of floods and Palmo, a researcher at the Tibet Policy Institute of the Tibetan government in-exile, told ANI, "This is not surprising at all. For the past many decades China has been looking into ways to exploit these water resources. Last year China announced that they had approved the construction of the dam and now recently Chinese government have announced that they are going to start the construction."She pointed out the lack of transparency around the project's design and impact. "The more concerning issue is that they have not announced that how this dam will be constructed and what impact it will have on the people. They should also take into consideration the concerns of lower downstream countries."Palmo emphasized that China has not shared key details about the project. "Overall they have not shared the information about the project it can have impact on the environment, the people who are living along the river and it can also have geopolitical impact on the region."Highlighting environmental risks, she said, "The region is itself seismically active and there are many recent incidents where there are number of landslides and earthquakes happening in the region. So, by constructing such a huge dam which would twice the size of Three Gorges Dam, can create huge impact on environment and the people."She added, "The secrecy and the Chinese government not sharing this information also make people more concerned about what impact it has. If there is a transparency from the Chinese government side, it can also ease the tensions among people and other countries."Palmo warned that downstream countries remain vulnerable. "Since it is transboundary river, many of the downstream countries like India and Bangladesh, they are heavily dependent on rivers. So most of the agriculture in Assam are also dependent on the rivers. Rivers are also considered a lifeline for Bangladesh.""So by holding so much of water in these dams it can cause anytime floods and droughts in downstream countries. It is like downstream countries are at the mercy of Chinese government," she Tsering, deputy speaker of the Tibetan parliament in-exile, echoed similar concerns, stating, "It is a great concern. China has the maximum number of hydro dams in the world and still they are not satisfied with that. The Three Gorges Dam was supposed to be the biggest Dam, now they are building bigger than Three Gorges Dam over Brahmaputra."She stressed that the project's location in a seismic zone could pose dangers to all riparian nations. "I think it is a very serious concern the world needs to take note of because it is in a seismic prone area of south Asia, if something happens to dam what will happen to all the riparian nations."She also pointed out China's potential use of the project as a political tool. "China might use hydro power as leverage to have any deal with rest of countries where these waters are flowing and next to that the world must take into consideration that by building all these power grid they are selling power to different countries."Tsering said the Tibetan parliament-in-exile has been trying to raise the issue. "Whenever the Indian parliament session is held, we always go there and try to bring it in the notice to the members of the parliament. Since more than two years we have been talking about this dam the one in Medog is coming up. India should take a note of it and we are sure that they will look into it."Explaining the meaning of "leverage", she added, "When I say leverage, it means they are going to weaponise the hydropower dams. When the tap is in their hands towards the northeastern side, whenever they want they can use it as a flood generating dam or whenever our crops are good they may just close it and bring drought to our farmers. These are related to the livelihood and existence of communities in the south Asian countries."
