The Collective will build upon the ongoing cooperation between the University of São Paulo (USP) and Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), fostering collaboration and resource sharing between two countries in the southern hemisphere – Malaysia and Brazil.
Advertisement The announcement took place at the inaugural Energy and Nature Forum, hosted by Petronas in Kuala Lumpur, which aims to put a spotlight on the intersection of energy and nature by bringing together global leaders from both fields. Petronas also unveiled its first ever nature and resource efficiency targets at the Forum which, together with the Blue Carbon Collective, reinforces the company's commitment to use natural resources responsibly and to engage in practices that restore, protect and conserve ecosystems in countries where it operates. The five-year collaboration is expected to generate vital research data to advance carbon emissions reduction strategies, help conserve mangroves, and create local job and business opportunities. The Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team will support the research activities, reflecting their commitment to raising environmental awareness. 'Together with our partners, we believe that the Blue Carbon Collective is an important research initiative that enables the global community to further unlock the potential of mangroves in mitigating risks of climate change. As Petronas launches its new nature targets, this initiative will also help enhance our collective understanding of efforts related to biodiversity even as we work towards creating a net positive impact in our projects and undertakings,' said Tan Sri Tengku Muhammad Taufik, the President and Group CEO of Petronas during the launch. The Blue Carbon Collective also supports Yayasan Petronas' One Million Trees Programme – an ecosystem restoration and community development initiative that will see 100,000 mangrove trees planted in the Sungai Santi Forest Reserve in Johor, Malaysia, to rehabilitate degraded areas. To date, 20,000 mangrove seedlings have been planted by the local communities. The ongoing cooperation between USP and UPM will support UPM to conduct research in the Sungai Santi Forest Reserve and apply established methodologies from Brazil. These include carbon stock assessment and monitoring of soil quality and ecosystem health in Malaysia, enabling comparative analysis between the two countries. The Blue Carbon Collective aims to deliver several research objectives including identifying the impact of land use changes, understanding carbon stabilisation mechanisms, and developing and applying a soil quality index. The initiative aligns with Petronas' Sustainability Approach, particularly the pillars of Thriving with Nature, which promotes ecosystem restoration and conservation, and Fostering a Just Transition, which supports equitable opportunities for local communities. This initiative also reinforces and strengthens the sustainability intent of the partnership between Petronas and the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team, not only on the racetrack but also off the track towards achieving our shared net zero ambitions. Petronas also announced its first targets for nature and resource efficiency at the Energy and Nature Forum, marking a landmark moment for the company in streamlining its efforts biodiversity conservation and even more responsible use of natural resources in Malaysia and in communities where Petronas conducts operations. These targets for nature include, no net loss of biodiversity for existing operations and net positive impact on biodiversity for new projects. Petronas will aim to reduce its freshwater withdrawal for its domestic operations at existing water-stressed areas by 14pc by 2030 using 2021 as baseline, and aim to achieve a circularity rate of 82pc for hazardous waste at its domestic operations by 2030. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? FBM KLCI extends uptrend on relief over 90-day US-China tariff truce

KUALA LUMPUR: Bursa Malaysia opened lower but quickly reversed course to trade higher on Tuesday, lifted by relief over a 90-day tariff truce between the United States and China. The truce halts planned US tariffs of up to 145% on Chinese goods and Chinese tariffs of up to 125% on US goods, Reuters reported. The FBM KLCI rose 9.73 points, or 0.62%, to 1,572.97 at 9.28 am, buoyed by gains in PETRONAS-linked counters. The index had earlier opened 1.41 points lower at 1,561.83. Berjaya Research Sdn Bhd said short-term profit-taking may emerge, given the negative developments on Wall Street overnight and the recent market gains. 'A pullback could prove to be healthy, which often helps markets to digest recent advances and lay the groundwork for renewed momentum. 'Looking ahead, investors will be tuning towards U.S. inflation data slated to be released later tonight which could provide further signals on the timing of potential interest rate cuts,' the research house said. 'With the local bourse solidifying its position above SMA200, we keep our view that the immediate resistance is located at 1,566 points, followed by 1,570 points. Meanwhile, the immediate support is envisaged at 1,540 points, and thereafter at 1,532 points,' it added. Azalina: Sabah's role in oil and gas industry expands under Petronas collaboration

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 12 — Sabah has been given broader participation in the oil and gas industry value chain, including through the active involvement of state-owned companies such as SMJ Energy Sdn Bhd (SMJE) via the Commercial Collaboration Agreement (CCA). Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform), Datuk Azalina Othman Said, stated that the strategic collaboration between Petronas and the Sabah state government was strengthened with the signing of the CCA on Dec 7, 2021. She added that, as of the first quarter of 2025, a total of 326 Sabah-based companies have been licensed and registered as Petronas vendors. 'Following the signing of the CCA in 2021, the value of contracts awarded to these companies had increased from RM613 million to RM2 billion as of 2024 – a 3.3-fold increase,' Azalina said in a written reply to a parliamentary question published on the Dewan Rakyat portal yesterday. She was responding to Datuk Seri Jeffrey Kitingan (GRS-Keningau), who had asked for clarification on when the government and Petronas would implement the agreements with the Sabah government regarding the state's oil and gas rights and revenue sharing. She stated that Petronas remains committed to progressively and structurally strengthening Sabah's participation, based on the principles of technical feasibility and sustainable commercial terms. 'This comprehensive development reflects the increased participation and commercial benefits enjoyed by Sabah in the national oil and gas industry, in line with the cooperation framework agreed upon through the CCA,' she added. — Bernama

Govt: Petronas retains control of oil resources

KUALA LUMPUR: The Petroleum Development Act 1974 remains in force, with national oil company Petronas continuing to hold exclusive rights to explore and exploit Malaysia's petroleum resources, the government said. Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said said the act vests Petronas with the ownership of petroleum, and the rights, powers, and exclusive privileges to explore, exploit, and acquire petroleum both onshore and offshore Malaysia. Azalina said this in a written reply to Hassan Abdul Karim (PH–Pasir Gudang), who had asked to what extent the federal government would defend the act as a foundation of the country's economic sovereignty in the oil and gas industry. The question followed claims by the Sarawak government and Petroleum Sarawak Bhd (Petros) that challenged the position of Petronas under the act. In a separate written reply, Azalina said contracts awarded to Sabah-based companies by Petronas had more than tripled to RM2 billion since the signing of the Commercial Collaborative Agreement (CCA) in 2021. The state had also secured a major boost in natural gas supply this year to power industrial growth. The value of contracts awarded to 326 licensed Sabah vendors had risen from RM613 million in 2021 to RM2 billion as of 2024, she said. This represents a 3.3-fold increase. Azalina said Sabah's role in the oil and gas industry had been strengthened through the CCA, which allowed greater participation by state-owned enterprises, including Sabah Energy Corporation Sdn Bhd (SEC) and SMJ Energy Sdn Bhd (SMJE). She said that for 2025, Petronas had raised the natural gas supply to SEC from 104 million standard cubic feet per day (MMscf/d) to 224 MMscf/d. Of this, 150 MMscf/d had been allocated to Esteel at the Sipitang Industrial Park. Azalina said this in response to a question from Datuk Seri Dr Jeffrey Kitingan (GRS-Keningau), who had asked when the government and Petronas would implement agreements with the Sabah government on the return of oil and gas rights and revenue sharing, similar to the arrangements for Sarawak. He also asked about making Sabah the sole aggregator for all gas in the state. She added that SMJE had also acquired a 25 per cent equity stake in the ZLNG project and was participating in a Technical Exploration Agreement in the Layang-Layang Basin with industry partners. These developments reflected the enhanced participation and commercial benefits Sabah enjoyed in the national oil and gas industry, in line with the cooperation framework agreed under the CCA, she said. The CCA was signed between the Sabah government and Petronas on Dec 7, 2021. Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said the CCA would allow the state to get greater revenue sharing, participation, and a voice in oil and gas-related matters through a commercial consultative framework with Petronas, while at the same time ensuring Sabah held on to its legal rights.
