Josh Edwards goes from Wembley tourist to play-off promotion-chaser
The last time promotion-chasing Charlton star Josh Edwards was at Wembley he was on a tour with his dad.
This afternoon he will have access all areas and hopes that includes a dream ticket to the English Championship.
The defender, along with fellow Scot Greg Docherty, will be looking to help Charlton Athletic take care of London rivals Leyton Orient so he can walk the 107 Wembley steps up to lift the League One play-off trophy with the Addicks.
Edwards recalled: 'I did the old Wembley tour back in 2015 or 2016. 'I was 15 or 16 years old at the time and I went down with my dad. 'So I have been to Wembley but it was a long time ago and I have never seen a game there. 'I got a few pictures taken with me sitting on the bench. 'I'm sure my dad will get it back out at some point. 'There are photographs but I am hoping nobody gets their hands on it. 'I haven't seen the photos in years.'
The 24-year-old has had experience of playing at the likes of Hampden, Ibrox and Celtic Park but accepts this afternoon will be the biggest of the lot, with such a big prize at stake,
He acknowledged: 'I think it's probably the biggest game in my career that I've had.
'I've had the opportunity to play in some big stadiums and big games.
'I've played at Hampden a few times.
'I've played Celtic Park and Ibrox and that sort of thing.
'I've played in big stadiums, but obviously this one trumps a lot, doesn't it?
'In terms of size and that sort of thing.
'It's definitely the biggest game I've been a part of in my career.'
The left-back swapped Dunfermline for Charlton in the summer transfer window. The aim was always to get promotion and knows it would be great if they could do it via Wembley.
Edwards claimed: 'It was definitely one of the things that made me want to come to England, for my career and to play in these sort of play-off games.
'In Scotland, the season finishes a bit earlier than England, so you're always just sitting at home watching these sort of play-off games.
'It's definitely something I've wanted to do for a long, long time.
'We've had a good second half of the season to get ourselves into the play-offs.
'We're playing well at the minute, so hopefully come Sunday night we'll be a championship club.'
Edwards biggest headache has been trying to get enough Wembley tickets for family and friends.
He acknowledged: 'It was a bit of a scramble to get tickets. 'I needed to get 19 in the end 'It was a tough one, but a lot of the people that have come and gone have already been down this season and supported me and that sort of thing.
'So to try and get the tickets for them was a bit of a no-brainer. It's not just as if they've come and gone for the final or one-off sort of thing.'
The good thing from Charlton's point of view is that they beat their rivals, Orient, home and away in the League. They will be looking to make it the perfect hat-trick under the Wembley Arch.
Edwards admitted: 'To be fair, both games have been really, really, really tight.
'They've both been last-minute goals we've scored against them.
'The first game we scored in the 90th minute.
'We were 1-0 down away from home against them when we scored.
'We scored two goals in the 80th minute and in the 93rd minute we won it.
'They've both been really tough, demanding games. It's been very close between us.
'Thankfully we've got the win against them twice and hopefully it will also prove to be third time lucky.'
It has been some rise from Airdrie to Dunfermline and now Charlton. To steal a famous phrase from a certain former Newcastle manager in Kevin Keegan.
Edwards said: 'I'd absolutely love it, if we could get promoted. 'It would be great.
'That was our aim at the start of the season.I'd love it. I'd absolutely love it.'

Adil Aouchiche addresses prospect of smashing Aberdeen's transfer record and reveals Pittodrie pitch
Adil Aouchiche has no fears over potentially becoming Aberdeen 's record signing. The midfielder has joined the Dons on-loan from Sunderland. The Reds have the option to buy the playmaker for £1.5 million if he makes an impact at Pittodrie. Aberdeen's previous club record buy was the £1million they paid Oldham Athletic for Paul Bernard. Aouchiche said: 'I don't really focus on how much it is, but, of course, both clubs are confident about this move and the transfer. 'I just care about what I do on the pitch and how I can help the club. 'That decision will be at the end of the season, I'll just focus on my football and see what happens. 'Of course, I am glad to be a player the club is putting good money on so that's a motivation for me. 'The club wants to buy me, which is always good for a player to know. 'I don't see that as pressure, I know the pressure of football and am used to being in this type of position.' Jimmy Thelin has put massive faith in the 23-year-old. Aouchiche came through the youth ranks of Paris Saint-Germain and is used to that sort of pressure. Aouchiche claimed: 'I just need to be myself, enjoy myself on the pitch. 'From being a young kid I just wanted to play football, win games and score in games and create goals. 'I just wanted to enjoy myself on the pitch and I think being here will be good for me. 'I came from one of the best clubs in the world in PSG, played for two good clubs in France and a huge club in England in Sunderland. So I want to bring my experience to Aberdeen. 'The things I learned will help me for the rest of my career, sometimes it was hard and other times it was good. 'For me, as a player, it was good for me to sometimes be at the bottom.' The ex-St Etienne and Lorient player confirmed an unlikely former Don helped sell him on Aberdeen. Mo Chalai had a season with the Dons back in 2012. The Algerian is close to one of Aouchiche's relations. He explained: 'I always like to speak to somebody who has played in the league, it gives me a feeling before I sign for a club. 'It is a new challenge, I am still young and still learning. 'I spoke to a lot of players, some from the Ligue 1 or the English Championship because they know the league better than me. 'I also spoke to an old player, Mo Chalali. 'He played for Aberdeen. 'He said good things about Aberdeen, this badge and the team. 'Mo Chalali is the best friend of one of my cousins so I had the chance to speak to him on Facetime. 'It was good, a really important step for me. He said good things about the club and the people here. 'It was one of the main steps of this move because I didn't really know what was happening inside the club, so I was happy to hear good things.' Aouchiche came in after Aberdeen's Scottish Cup win. He wants to have his own successes in red. He and his Aberdeen team mates are hoping it starts with an extended Premier Sports Cup run, which starts away to Morton. He confirmed: 'It is a good chance for us. 'Every game is important. 'Last season they won the cup and it would be good to win another cup or something else this season. 'Every game is important. 'We just need to win to get confidence, individually and as a team. 'We also want to win for the fans.' Aberdeen are still waiting for clearance to play Kenan Bilalovic and to complete the signing of striker Marko Lazetic from AC Milan.

Here is why I'm worried Rangers will sack Russell Martin and go for Derek McInnes
Martin has endured a tough start to life at Ibrox while McInnes is flying at Hearts It took Hearts two years to see sense and finally go get Derek McInnes. But I'm already beginning to worry that the people at Rangers might now be starting to wish they'd done the same. It's been a difficult start for Russell Martin at Ibrox and just six games into the season he's already under some serious pressure from the disgruntled punters through there. Listen, I'm a big fan of the former Southampton boss and hope he does well in Glasgow. But this is football and we all know what happens when you fail to deliver results, especially at a club like Rangers. And I've got to say, I'm starting to worry about what that means for Hearts when it comes to McInnes. It was when Robbie Neilson left Tynecastle in 2023 that I first called for Ann Budge to make a move for the then Kilmarnock gaffer. It took until this summer for the club to at last make that appointment and yeah, we're only two games in but I think there's already been some pretty compelling evidence that it was the right choice. But, if I'm honest with myself, I just can't see him seeing out the campaign as Jambos boss. Call me a pessimist if you want. But if Martin can't get his new-look Light Blues side firing quick, the calls for change along the M8 that are already starting to murmur will only grow louder and louder. And at that point Gers' new American owners will be forced to act. For me, there's no-one else they can look to than Del. Rangers and McInnes have been engaged in this on-off courtship for years. They obviously came close to partnering up in 2018 before he backed out to remain at Aberdeen but the rumours and speculation have never gone away. And if Martin does continue to struggle, I just don't think Rangers can avoid making a move for him this time. The club have obviously tried out a number of different bosses, each with their own styles of play and brands of leadership, in recent years without achieving much success. But when I look at Del, I see a boss made from the same mould as Walter Smith. He's the closest they could get to the great man in terms of leadership and aura. Along with Brendan Rodgers, I think he's the only manager currently working in Scotland who can walk into a changing room and immediately grab the attention and respect of every player. I'll get slaughtered for saying this, but I actually think Del is bigger than Hearts - or certainly has the potential to reach a higher level. And that's why I worry about the situation at Rangers. He's a boyhood fan and played for the club. Having knocked them back once, would his heart really allow him to do it a second time? But it's not only the powers that be at Ibrox who will be taking an interest in the Gorgie boss. Steve Clarke is leading Scotland into the World Cup qualifiers next month desperate for a result. Like Martin, the national team coach is also facing increasing scrutiny over results and performances and if things don't go well against Denmark and Belarus, it might be SFA chief exec Ian Maxwell making the call to Tynecastle. Like the situation at Rangers, there's only one man Hampden chiefs should be thinking about if they need a new head coach. And again, could Derek really reject the chance to manage his country? I'm not so sure. These are all hypotheticals of course but if there's one thing you can be sure of it's that Tony Bloom and his team at Jamestown Analytics will be working through the potential outcome of every scenario. I'm sure they will already have a succession plan in place for the day Derek departs. But the best way to stave off any approach would be for the Hearts hierarchy to continue delivering everything McInnes asks for. As much as I'm saying I worry about what the future will bring in terms of interest in Del, my huge hope is that Hearts can hang onto him for as long as they possibly can because already, just two weeks into the season I've seen signs that things are looking far more promising for the team. There is a clear style of play and even a shift in the mentality, as proved by the last-gasp win at Tannadice last weekend. And Derek does look determined to deliver here. I read his comments this week about hoping to end the club's 63-year wait for a League Cup triumph. He was entirely right to say that is far too long for a club the size of Hearts and I like that he is making public his intention to set that right. Mind you, it won't be easy this afternoon through in Paisley. St Mirren has been a difficult place for Hearts to go to in recent years but I like the way we are shaping up this season and I reckon that new steeliness Derek has implemented should see us through. In fact, a win against Saints is the only thing I'm not worried about.
