Australia's Formula One ace Oscar Piastri takes pole at Belgian Grand Prix with fastest lap in history
Red Bull's reigning champion Max Verstappen will join Piastri on the front row for the first race since Christian Horner was dismissed as team boss and replaced with Laurent Mekies.
Piastri lapped the Spa-Francorchamps circuit with a best time of one minute 40.510 seconds, 0.477 seconds quicker than Verstappen and 0.618 clear of Norris.
He was at risk of being eliminated after straying off track in the second part of the session but bounced back to pip Verstappen, who split the two dominant McLarens by relegating Norris to third, .618 off the pace.
The flying lap set a new record, too, seven tenths faster than Lewis Hamilton's record from 2020.
'The car's been mega all day,' said Piastri, who claimed his first sprint pole of the campaign.
'This is a track I love, it's my favourite one of the year and maybe that gave me a couple of extra tenths (of a second).'
The Melburnian, who also set the pace in earlier practice, is eight points clear at the top after 12 of 24 rounds.
'It was a good lap. A little scare in SQ2 with the lap deletion. But thanks to the team, the car has been great and this is a track I love. Maybe that gave me a couple of extra tenths,' he said.
'The car has been in a good window since lap one and it is a track I always enjoy coming to.
'It is nice to get a result today.
'The Red Bulls were very quick in a straight line in practice. That makes life difficult in terms of it being the worst track to have pole position.'
There was a lot of love for Piastri on social media following his electrifying effort, with F1 fans stunned by his performance.
'OH. MY. WORD. Oscar Piastri's sprint pole position laptime is OVER SEVEN TENTHS FASTER than the previous lap record … set by Lewis Hamilton in the MERCEDES W11,' Formula 1 God said on X (formerly Twitter).
And the F1 Republic said: 'An unstoppable lap from the Aussie secured Sprint Pole ahead of Verstappen and Norris.'
F1 presenter Matt Gallagher said: 'Oscar Piastri that is a PHENOMENAL lap ... nearly half a second clear!!!'
While a fan said: 'That Piastri lap…. standing up and applauding ... that's my driver.'
Ferrari's Charles Leclerc starts fourth but teammate Lewis Hamilton will line up 18th after a difficult afternoon for the seven-times world champion, whose most recent win came at the same circuit last year with Mercedes.
The Briton spun on his last flying lap while on course to go through, with the suspicion falling on a failure of the car's rear axle.
George Russell, who finished first last year for Mercedes but was then disqualified for an underweight car, also struggled and qualified 13th.
McLaren team chief Andrea Stella told Sky Sports: 'That was a pretty amazing lap by Oscar, he capitalised on everything available in the car.
'An almost perfect session from Oscar, except for the lap deletion in SQ2 which gave us a bit of a moment on the pit wall!'

Fresh off a record-breaking defensive season, Aussie NBA star Dyson Daniels treated hundreds of local kids in Wanneroo to a day they'll never forget last Saturday. Daniels spent nearly six hours at Ace Ballerz, the family-run indoor basketball centre in Wanneroo, running multiple clinics with kids aged seven to 18, shooting hoops and holding a special Q&A session. Nicknamed 'The Great Barrier Thief' for his defensive prowess, the Atlanta Hawks guard and Australian Olympian passed on techniques, encouragement and plenty of advice about discipline and mindset to the kids for both on and off the court. The event was the biggest day yet for Ace Ballerz, founded just eight months ago by local mother Alaina Habaybeh at the site of the old Drovers Marketplace. Habaybeh said she initially thought it was a hoax when she first received the invitation to host Daniels but the event exceeded all her expectations. 'So I, at first, ignored it and then I got a follow-up email but it was personalised, and a random call on a Saturday. 'I knew from the beginning that I was out of my league organising the day but everything went according to plan. He was amazing.' Daniels, who is only 22-years-old and comes from Bendigo in Victoria, took the NBA by storm last season, becoming the first Australian crowned Most Improved Player. Despite his impressive achievements at such a young age, Habaybeh said she was struck by how humble and easygoing the star was. 'He just was like a normal Australian kid from Wanneroo,' she said. 'He didn't speak down to anyone. I can't explain to you how natural, friendly and casual his energy was. 'He made the day relaxed, wasn't high maintenance and really took time to connect with all the kids and answer their questions and make them feel valued.' 'It was great being here in Perth for the camp. The chance to try and help young players in the way I was helped at these camps, is something I enjoy doing,' he said. One key piece of advice Daniels shared with the kids was to put in the work during training so game day becomes the easy part, stressing the importance of preparation. He also spoke about the sacrifices his parents made and reminded the kids to always be thankful for their parents' support. But there was one message Habaybeh believes will truly stick with the young players. 'He said playing in the NBA is great, and while the money is phenomenal and the spotlight is cool, there's something different about playing for your country,' she said. 'If he had to choose one, he said it would be to represent Australia, hands down. 'I think hearing that from Dyson hits differently for the kids rather than hearing it from a teacher or a coach. Van Groningen said the clinic was all about inspiring kids to chase their dreams by starting with the fundamentals. 'We had a range of ages and abilities that showed up but the whole idea of the day was really to try to assist them and inspire them as they pursue their junior basketball careers,' Van Groningen said. 'You can't really turn a young player into a significantly different player in one day. But what you can do is give them some things to take home with them and then put that to use, and then their work will determine the rest. 'It wasn't all that long ago that he was in their place and at basketball clinics where others were inspiring him; those things all contributed to his journey,' he said. 'It's important for him to give back, but it also comes naturally to him; it doesn't feel like an effort. It just feels like returning to where he was not all that long ago.' 'All of these things are possible down the line,' Van Groningen, who also works with Giddy's team, said. 'Depending on what next year's off-season looks like with the Boomers' commitments and other obligations these guys have, it really comes down to how much time they'll have in Australia.'

Formula 1 supremo hits Lewis Hamilton with blunt reality check
Lewis Hamilton has been told to quit F1 and demand his $AUD370 million Ferrari contract is paid in full. He was equally as despondent after finishing 12th in the Grand Prix, and now Formula 1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone has told him to quit the sport. 'Lewis is very talented, was and probably still is,' Ecclestone told the Daily Mail. 'But like a lot of leading sports personalities when they reach the top, there is only one way to go, and it's not a good direction. It's only down. 'They get tired. Lewis is tired. He's been doing what he is doing forever. He needs a rest from it for good, a total reset to do something completely different. 'He may not think it but he will soon get used to doing other stuff away from motor racing in retirement. I think he should have done it a while ago. 'The guy is not a cheat. But he would be cheating himself if he goes on. He should stop now. 'If I were looking after him I would negotiate with Ferrari immediately and say, 'If you have someone to replace Lewis, he'll step aside.'' Hamilton has not got off to the best start in his three-year contract with Ferrari, which is worth $A123m a season. His teammate Charles Leclerc qualified on pole in Hungary and has out qualified Hamilton ten times, with the Brit quicker on just two occasions. He has also failed to podium in 14 attempts with his only success this season coming in China when he won the sprint race. Ecclestone shared concern for Hamilton and advised him to retire to avoid the risk of racing. 'I wouldn't want anything bad to happen to Lewis,' he added. 'He's not fighting for a world championship and is at a stage of his life when it wouldn't be worth him spending two years laid up in bed with a broken back or anything else nasty. 'He doesn't need to take the risk any longer. He's won seven world titles and that is quite enough.' The Formula 1 supremo said if Hamilton were to step aside, Ferrari should target Racing Bulls rookie Isack Hadjar or Kick Sauber rookie Gabriel Bortoleto to drive alongside Leclerc.

Mercedes-Benz is expanding its customisation options in Australia, where some of its most expensive models are now available with an array of new exterior and interior options… each with a hefty price tag. Marketed under the Manufaktur Exclusive banner, there are 50 new exterior colours and 20 new interior upholstery options. There's an array of tasteful options, from rich violet exterior paints to elegant emerald upholstery. However, the Manufaktur Exclusive range also includes lurid green and orange exterior finishes, and bright yellow and Kermit the Frog-style green upholstery options.
