Over 50 Killed In Bus Collision In Western Afghanistan: Cops

NDTV2 days ago
Kabul:
More than 50 people were killed on Tuesday in western Afghanistan when a passenger bus carrying migrants recently returned from Iran collided with a truck and a motorcycle, local police and a provincial official said.
Police in Herat province said the accident was caused due to the bus's "excessive speed and negligence".
The bus was carrying Afghans recently returned from Iran and en route to the capital Kabul, provincial official Mohammad Yousuf Saeedi told AFP.
The returnees are part of a massive wave of Afghans deported or forced out of Iran in recent months.
"All the passengers were migrants who had boarded the vehicle in Islam Qala," said Saeedi, referring to a border crossing point.
Police in Guzara district outside Herat city, where the accident occurred, said a motorcycle was also involved.
The majority of those who died were on the bus, with two people travelling in the truck killed and another two on the motorcycle.
Traffic accidents are common in Afghanistan, due in part to poor roads after decades of conflict, dangerous driving on highways, and a lack of regulation.
In December last year, two bus accidents involving a fuel tanker and a truck on a highway through central Afghanistan killed at least 52.

Autopsy Rules Out Trauma Or Foul Play In Death Of French Streamer Who Died On Air

Last Updated: The initial autopsy results show 'no internal or external traumatic injuries' or burns on the body, with only minor bruises and healed lesions observed A post-mortem examination has ruled out trauma or third-party involvement in the death of French streamer Raphael Graven, who passed away during a live broadcast earlier this week. Graven, 46, known online as 'Jean Pormanove" or simply 'JP", died on Monday in the village of Contes near Nice. He was found unresponsive at home shortly after ending a livestream on the platform Kick. According to Nice prosecutor Damien Martinelli, the initial autopsy results show 'no internal or external traumatic injuries" or burns on the body, with only minor bruises and healed lesions observed. 'The probable causes of death appear to be medical and/or toxicological," he said, adding that more tests have been ordered. Footage from the livestream showed Graven lying under a sheet while another man threw a plastic bottle at him. Despite the disturbing nature of the scene, prosecutors confirmed there were no signs of violence or assault. 'The medical experts consider that Mr Graven's death was not traumatic in origin and was not related to the intervention of a third party," Martinelli said. Authorities said Graven had a history of heart problems and was receiving treatment for a thyroid condition, which could have played a role in his sudden death. Kick has suspended all co-streamers involved in the broadcast pending the results of the investigation. The company also announced a full review of its French content policies. ‘Surrender…' How US ‘Captured New IS Boss', Killed ‘Most Dangerous' Leader In Pre-Dawn Syria Raid

A US-led coalition captured a senior member of the Islamic State group in northwest Syria on Aug. 20, state media and a war monitor reported. Helicopters and drones provided air cover to the troops that landed in the Syrian town of Atmeh, near the Turkish border. The person taken captive has been identified in reports as Abu Hafs al-Qurayshi, an Iraqi citizen and IS commander, who was detained in a pre-dawn operation. Another Iraqi citizen, identified by Syrian state TV as Ali, aka Salah Numan, was killed. Meanwhile, an AFP report, citing state TV, identified Numan as the IS leader who was targeted in the US-led attack. Greta Thunberg, Activists Block Norway Oil Refinery In Protest

Greta Thunberg and more than 100 more climate activists blocked Oslo's main avenue and a bank branch on Thursday to demand Norway shutter its oil industry, police and organisers said. The action came on the heels of the group's 36-hour protest blocking Norway's largest oil refinery on its southwestern coast. "There are more than 100 activists outside DNB's flagship bank on the main Karl Johan avenue," Oslo police operations leader Anders Aas told AFP just after 12:15 pm (1015 GMT), adding that police were monitoring the situation at the scene. "Sixteen of them entered the bank but were asked to leave," he said. No arrests had been made. The protest was organised by Extinction Rebellion. In a statement, the Reclaim the Future organisation which was also taking part in the protest claimed DNB was "the bank in Scandinavia investing the most money in the expanding fossil fuel industry." It said the demonstrators inside the bank unfurled banners, chanted and made speeches demanding Norway phase out its oil and gas business. "We have come here from across Europe to shed light on the violence that the fossil fuel industry is committing everyday against all life," 23-year-old activist Rufus Rune from Sweden said in the statement. "First we conducted Norway's biggest blockade against fossil fuel infrastructure, now we're focusing on the financial institutions that enable their deadly operations." Norway, western Europe's biggest oil and gas producer, is regularly criticised for its huge fossil fuel output. Oslo insists its industry provides jobs and develops know-how, and stresses the importance of guaranteeing stable energy deliveries to Europe. Equinor, which owns the Mongstad refinery and is itself majority-owned by the Norwegian state, has said it intends to keep its oil production in the country stable at 1.2 million barrels per day until 2035, and expects to produce 40 billion cubic metres of gas a year by 2035.
