Guirassy double as Dortmund down Monterrey to reach Club World Cup quarters
The striker scored twice in the first half and Bundesliga powerhouses Dortmund then held off the Mexican side in a battling second after German Berterame's quick strike.
Former Real Madrid great Ramos had a golden chance to equalise at the end but headed wide, meaning it is Dortmund who go on to face the Spanish giants in the last eight after they beat Juventus earlier on.
"I think I could have scored at least three goals but I am happy to have helped the team win," Guirassy told broadcaster DAZN.
"I expect a very tough game. Real Madrid want to go through so it will be a tough game but we will be prepared."
After grinding through several games in the blazing afternoon sun during the group stage, Dortmund were grateful to be at the air-conditioned Mercedes-Benz Stadium and played at a faster pace in Atlanta.
Monterrey coach Domenec Torrent warned his side they had to defend diligently to have a hope of beating Dortmund, but the Germans picked the locks too easily to open the scoring in the 14th minute.
Guirassy exchanged quick passes with Karim Adeyemi on the edge of the box to confuse defender Jorge Rodríguez, and then tucked a slick finish home at the near post.
The 29-year-old Guinea international, who finished as joint-top scorer in the UEFA Champions League this season, netted his second 10 minutes later.
Jesus Corona came close to levelling by accident in between, but his cross bounced back off the post.
Guirassy climbed to 37 goals for the season across all competitions as he was once more teed up by the darting Adeyemi, stroking home from the edge of the box.
"Guirassy is one of the best strikers in the world," Dortmund's Yan Couto told reporters.
"Today he scored two goals and he made the victory."
Dortmund coach Niko Kovac anticipated Monterrey playing with aggression but his side put in the harder tackles in the first half and Jobe Bellingham was booked for needlessly flying in on Colombian playmaker Nelson Deossa.
It means he will not be able to face his older brother Jude Bellingham in the quarter-final showdown against Real.
Guirassy let Monterrey off the hook with a couple of chances when he might have netted a third.
"I think I could have scored at least three goals," admitted the striker.
RAMOS COMES CLOSE
Monterrey, who earned an impressive draw against Inter Milan in the group phase, were dangerous going forward but Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel stayed alert to keep Corona at bay before the break.
The Swiss stopper could do nothing about Berterame heading home a looping rebound from close range early in the second half as Monterrey came out forcefully.
Kobel made another solid save to thwart former Porto star Corona, who appealed in vain for a penalty when he felt he had been shoved over from behind by the hulking Niklas Suele as he ran through.
Berterame did beat Kobel but the goal was ruled out for offside, with the noisier portion of the 31,000 attending left groaning.
Guirassy snatched at another chance to complete a hat-trick on a rare Dortmund forray forward as Monterrey fans chanted "yes we can".
The Mexican side's supporters were also warned late in the second half over discriminatory chanting, for yelling a word considered homophobic when Kobel took goal-kicks -- the Mexican football federation has been punished by FIFA in the past over the same issue at international games.
As the clock ticked down Torrent threw Ramos up front, desperate for some last-gasp magic from the 39-year-old.
Sporting the number 93 on his back, harking back to his famous 2014 Champions League final goal for Real Madrid to deny rivals Atletico, the Spaniard came inches away with a header in stoppage time which dropped agonisingly wide.
"The crowd and our fans and the people who understand about football, they saw that the team gave everything," Ramos told DAZN.
"Our supporters, I think they are proud of how we defended the shirt, and we have to continue moving forward."

Bayern Club World Cup clash with PSG a ‘perfect storm': Kompany
Bayern and PSG can rest easy on Saturday because of the roof at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. Bayern Munich's Belgian head coach Vincent Kompany speaks during a press conference at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta on Friday, ahead of the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 quarter-final football match against France's Paris Saint-Germain on Saturday. Photo: Patricia DE MELO MOREIRA / AFP Bayern Munich coach Vincent Kompany said his team's Club World Cup quarter-final clash with Paris Saint-Germain on Saturday will be an enthralling encounter because of their similar 'extreme' styles of play. Both Luis Enrique's PSG and Kompany's Bayern, champions of the French and German leagues respectively, like to dominate the ball, press high and play attacking football. ALSO READ: Chelsea edge Palmeiras to reach Club World Cup semis 'You have teams who are able to make a lot of good use of the ball in nearly every game, against deep blocks, high presses, everything,' Kompany told a news conference Friday. 'That creates a sort of, what we've seen here a lot, thunderstorm, right? It's a perfect storm. These games are always interesting, and… I would pay to watch it.' Bayern and PSG can rest easy on Saturday because of the roof at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta which means there will be no storm disruption, and Kompany said the match would be one to savour. 'If I was a neutral, I would come to see this game, for sure,' he said. 'Both teams have quite 'extreme' principles, which is why it's usually an interesting game.' Despite the obvious strength of the Champions League winners, Kompany said there was no side he would rather face than the Parisians. 'There's no reason to think that they're not going to be absolutely at their best tomorrow, but I think it's the type of challenge you like,' he explained. 'If I could pick one team to face, as a professional athlete, as a competitor, it's always the winners, and they are the winners, so we get a chance to play against them. 'It's tough, it's the toughest game, maybe, but that's why we're here, so I wouldn't have it any other way.' – 'Completely over the top' – The Belgian coach also hailed his PSG counterpart Luis Enrique, who won the treble with the French side. In November PSG lost 1-0 against Bayern but Kompany said criticism of the Spaniard at the time was greatly overblown. 'I could follow (his press conference) on one of the big screens and all the questions that were asked to him were completely over the top,' said Kompany. 'Really tough questions, big statements, everything is over, you failed in your job, you can do nothing — all these big statements. 'But I remember watching his team before we played them, most games they should have won 5-0 but somehow it was 1-1 or they lost, so it wasn't reflective of the spirit of the team… (or) of the dominance they had in every game.' ALSO READ: Bayern stand before PSG in battle of Club World Cup favourites Kompany said he was happy to see Luis Enrique's determination rewarded. 'It's nice to see that in those moments consistency paid off for him, but most importantly that he was strong enough to continue,' said the coach. 'It's not a compliment I'm giving, it's just a fact… it's just interesting to do this (rematch) six months fast forward, and to see how much things can change.'

Chelsea edge Palmeiras to reach Club World Cup semis
"In the first half we were in control of the game and could have scored more than one goal," said Chelsea coach Enzo Maresca. Chelsea's English midfielder #10 Cole Palmer (right) celebrates with teammate #08 Enzo Fernandez (left) after scoring his team's first goal during the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 quarterfinal football match against Brazil's Palmeiras at the Lincoln Financial Field Stadium in Philadelphia on Friday. Photo: FRANCK FIFE / AFP A late own-goal by goalkeeper Weverton took Chelsea through to the Club World Cup semi-finals on Friday as the Premier League side edged Palmeiras of Brazil 2-1 in a last-eight tie that had been lit up by a moment of magic from young star Estevao Willian. The teenage Brazil forward, who will join Chelsea after the tournament, was eager to impress his future employers and his brilliant 53rd-minute finish cancelled out Cole Palmer's opener in Philadelphia. ALSO READ: Bayern stand before PSG in battle of Club World Cup favourites But a deflected Malo Gusto cross went in off Palmeiras 'keeper Weverton in the 83rd minute to take Chelsea through to a semi-final showdown with another Brazilian side in Fluminense. 'In the first half we were in control of the game and could have scored more than one goal,' said Chelsea coach Enzo Maresca, dismissing suggestions his team had been fortunate. 'They started the second half better than us and the dynamic of the game changed, but then in the last 25 minutes we were in control again and I think we deserved to win without being lucky.' The scoreline was a repeat of Chelsea's victory when the teams met in the final of the Club World Cup under the tournament's old guise in 2022. 'Overall Chelsea was better. They have better players and a better coach,' admitted Palmeiras coach Abel Ferreira. 'They were lucky with the way they scored the second goal but it can happen in football and we need to accept it and move on.' Chelsea will now be fancied to go on and reach the final, with Fluminense standing in their way in the last four at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on Tuesday. If not everyone has yet been won over by the tournament, the intensity levels on the pitch are rising as it reaches the business end and there was a big-game atmosphere in Philadelphia. Lincoln Financial Field was almost sold out, with 65,782 fans in attendance despite much of the city having emptied out for the July 4 holiday and long weekend. This game played out to a backdrop of Independence Day fireworks lighting up the sky over the nearby Delaware River, but there were fireworks on the pitch too. – Independence Day fireworks – Chelsea lit the spark first, going ahead in the 16th minute thanks to a moment of class from England international Palmer. After drifting into a pocket of space just outside the Palmeiras box, Palmer controlled a Trevoh Chalobah pass on the half-turn, carried on into the area and dispatched a low shot past Weverton. It was the ideal start for Chelsea, who lost to Flamengo when they last faced Brazilian opposition in the same stadium during the group stage. Maresca added extra Brazilian flavour to the occasion by handing a first start to young midfielder Andrey Santos. With Moises Caicedo suspended, Santos occupied the holding midfield role for Chelsea while Pedro Neto lined up on the right wing, choosing to play despite having to come to terms with the tragic death of his Portugal teammate Diogo Jota on Thursday. Playing on the right wing for Palmeiras was Estevao, the 18-year-old Brazil prodigy set to join Chelsea in a big-money transfer agreed over a year ago. He knew this could be his last game for the Sao Paulo side, and Chelsea probably should have been two ahead before the interval only for Christopher Nkunku to blaze over after being teed up by Palmer. Instead Palmeiras equalised eight minutes into the second half, with Estevao the inevitable scorer. Positioned inside the Chelsea box to the right, Estevao controlled a pass by Richard Rios and took a touch to get in front of Levi Colwill, another to steady himself, and then surprised goalkeeper Robert Sanchez with an early shot that went in off the bar. Chelsea responded by sending on new signing Joao Pedro for his debut, the Brazilian becoming the 27th player used by Maresca during the tournament. The Blues pushed in search of a second goal but extra time was looking likely when the Premier League side grabbed a scrappy winner with seven minutes of the 90 to play. Following a corner played short, Enzo Fernandez found Malo Gusto and his attempted low centre from the left side of the box deflected off the toe of Agustin Giay to surprise Weverton, with the ball striking him on its way in.
