Suspect opens fire at Akron police during early morning traffic stop

AKRON, Ohio (WJW) – Akron police are actively searching for a shooting suspect who opened fire at two officers during a traffic stop early Tuesday morning, according to the Akron Fraternal Order of Police.
According to a press release, two officers pulled a silver Ford F-150 XLT over in West Akron in the area of Vernon Odom Boulevard and Tyler Street for traffic violations around 3:50 a.m.

According to the release, both officers walked up to the car when the suspect suddenly opened fire through the window. One of the officers returned fire, but the suspect sped away in the vehicle.
Neither officer involved was injured and the suspect remains at large, the release said.
According to the release, investigations have learned that the suspect vehicle involved is a rental car.
According to a press release later issued by the Akron Police Department, it is unknown if the suspect was struck when the officer returned fire.

'Akron Police Officers will track down this suspect and arrest him so he can face justice for his cowardly actions,' FOP President Brian Lucey said. 'I encourage this suspect to turn himself in peacefully now and avoid any more violence.'
According to the release from the FOP, investigators will review body camera footage and surveillance.
The officer involved in the shooting is a four-year veteran of the Akron Police Department, the release said.
'The officer will be placed on paid administrative leave according to department procedure,' the press release from the Akron Police Department said.

The Office of Professional Standards and Accountability will investigate and the report will be forwarded to the police chief and the City of Akron Police Auditor for evaluation.
A state-wide alert has been issued for the suspect and vehicle, which is described as having Ohio license plate PND-1016.

One dead, three hospitalized in multi-vehicle crash in Dauphin County
HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) — One person was killed and three other people were hospitalized, including two juveniles, with severe injuries after a multi-vehicle crash in Dauphin County last evening. According to State Police in Harrisburg, on June 6 at around 5:53 a.m., a 2007 Pontiac G6 was traveling south on North Hertzler Road in Londonderry Township, Dauphin County when it refused to stop at a stop sign. Police say the Pontiac entered the intersection without obeying the stop sign and struck an oncoming 2005 Ford F-350. The Brief A female passenger, who was critically injured in a two-vehicle crash on Fondren Road, has died. HOUSTON - FOX 26 has an update on a crash that occurred on Fondren Road on Thursday afternoon. According to Houston police, one of the three people that were injured in the crash, has died. Officials said a female passenger in one vehicle, who was taken to the hospital in critical condition, died at the hospital. What we know The crash happened at about 2 p.m. Thursday in the 9300 block of Fondren Road near South Braeswood Boulevard. According to HPD Lt. Larry Crowson, a Honda was speeding in the southbound lanes on Fondren near a Ford F-150. The Honda reportedly tried to avoid another vehicle that was coming from a side street when it struck the F150. Both of the vehicles rolled over several times, according to the lieutenant. The Honda crashed into a tree and was split into two parts. The Honda also struck two power poles, causing an outage in the area. The drivers of both vehicles are said to be in stable condition. Police had to close off the roadway for several hours following the crash on Thursday.
