Suspect opens fire at Akron police during early morning traffic stop

AKRON, Ohio (WJW) – Akron police are actively searching for a shooting suspect who opened fire at two officers during a traffic stop early Tuesday morning, according to the Akron Fraternal Order of Police.
According to a press release, two officers pulled a silver Ford F-150 XLT over in West Akron in the area of Vernon Odom Boulevard and Tyler Street for traffic violations around 3:50 a.m.

According to the release, both officers walked up to the car when the suspect suddenly opened fire through the window. One of the officers returned fire, but the suspect sped away in the vehicle.
Neither officer involved was injured and the suspect remains at large, the release said.
According to the release, investigations have learned that the suspect vehicle involved is a rental car.
According to a press release later issued by the Akron Police Department, it is unknown if the suspect was struck when the officer returned fire.

'Akron Police Officers will track down this suspect and arrest him so he can face justice for his cowardly actions,' FOP President Brian Lucey said. 'I encourage this suspect to turn himself in peacefully now and avoid any more violence.'
According to the release from the FOP, investigators will review body camera footage and surveillance.
The officer involved in the shooting is a four-year veteran of the Akron Police Department, the release said.
'The officer will be placed on paid administrative leave according to department procedure,' the press release from the Akron Police Department said.

The Office of Professional Standards and Accountability will investigate and the report will be forwarded to the police chief and the City of Akron Police Auditor for evaluation.
A state-wide alert has been issued for the suspect and vehicle, which is described as having Ohio license plate PND-1016.
