Off-field drama has emerged ahead of North Melbourne's centenary celebrations next Thursday night, with reports some of the club's 1975 VFL premiership team are boycotting the event due to the simultaneous celebration of last year's AFLW premiership.
The Kangaroos informed those invited to the celebration a month in advance before the club's fixture with the Western Bulldogs, where all six of North's 300-game players will be recognised on the Marvel Stadium turf.

But the likes of premiership player Sam Kekovich and Grand Final hero John Burns are not expected to be in attendance, discontent with last year's AFLW side sharing the spotlight. The celebrations for the club's 100 years align with the 50th season since the club's inaugural V/AFL flag.

Speaking on Fox Footy's Midweek Tackle, Herald Sun journalists Jon Ralph and Lauren Wood dissected the bizarre stand-off that threatens.
'Sonja Hood has tried and failed to convince Sam to try change his decision ... but he's just not interested in that. His stance is he feels the club attitude is representative of a club that doesn't revel in the 'Shinboner' history,' Ralph began
'My understanding is a really big slice of that frustration surrounds the fact that they have to share that event with the AFLW premiers of last year.
'They feel like... not that their were of a bigger quality than that, but (males) versus females. It's a challenging perspective. They (also) haven't invited all of their CEO's of the last 30 years, which I feel they should've done.'
As per the Herald Sun's report on Tuesday morning, only club patron Greg Miller is expected to attend the event as a former chief executive.
It makes for an awkward handling of relationship for North Melbourne between not just former players, but also a number of high-profile, off-field figures etched into Arden Street history.
'I personally think it's ridiculous ... the reality of this is, it's actually not a premiership reunion. It's a centenary event that was the first VFL premiership that the club won (and) this was the first AFLW premiership that the club won — and it was a really significant occasion,' Wood continued.
'The club has poured huge amounts of time, effort and money into developing this women's football program. (They are) really in the ground floor with that relationship with Melbourne University.
'This is a sign to the future of this football club, and the reality is, that AFLW is now part of the football club. It is part of the football landscape.
Ralph ended by saying: 'You're going to have to embrace all the girls who want to follow the premiership dream of those girls ... some of the 1975 (premiership) heroes haven't done that at all.'
North Melbourne's win over Carlton at the MCG last Saturday afternoon takes the club's win tally for the AFL season to four — the most they've had in the men's side since 2019.

Watch as the AFL's best golfers go head-to-head in the inaugural Code Sports Classic

It was a throwaway comment from Essendon's Jaxon Prior that perfectly captured the golfing form during the inaugural Code Sports Classic. 'I think you'd find there are a lot of people, especially other AFL players, that can do exactly what we're doing right now – which is hacking it around.' The three-hole competition was held for the first time at Spring Valley Golf Club, starring Prior, Carlton youngster Ollie Hollands and Code Sports footy reporter Jon Ralph. Hollands is one of the AFL's best golfers, slotting in at No.3 of Code Sports top 50 list, while Prior rounds out the top 10. But while there were thrilling moments, like a converted eagle, that showed signs of a future golfing career, there were also others, like one player chipping the ball directly into his cart, that proved footy was the right choice. 'We didn't pay, but we're getting our money's worth for the amount of shots we're having,' the player said after hitting his cart. 'Can I go home?' But not long after conceding the par 4 hole to Ralph, the footy star teed off on the par 5 with a stunning 270m drive. He then followed it up with a gorgeous iron shot that landed the ball within 10 feet, and then he promptly nailed the putt to secure an eagle and send the competition to overtime. Hollands and Prior are used to playing in front of 80,000 screaming fans at the MCG, but it was a different nerves-inducing experience at the course. It was watching a six-foot putt by Ralph on the sudden-death hole, which would have seen him win the inaugural Code Sports Classic.

VRC honchos off and racing – but not for Flemington

CBD's spies wandered into the VRC committee room on Saturday to find it suspiciously empty. We were told all committee members – bar vice chairman Michael Ramsden – had flown to the racing mecca of Royal Ascot for its big carnival. While the VRC stumped up for flights for chairman Neil Wilson and chief executive Kylie Rogers, who were 'invited by Royal Ascot and attended on official duties', an insider told CBD that the other directors had paid their own way. The VRC and Royal Ascot have reciprocal membership rights. The case can be made for promoting Melbourne Cup Week among the English racing elite and even luring some of their top-quality horses Down Under for the coming spring, but there is also a question of optics for an organisation with $70 million in debt and four years of losses. The club, which doesn't expect to return to profit until next year, spent $130 million on a new stand at Flemington before COVID and then shed 90 per cent of its revenue during the pandemic. (The stand looks like a cruise ship, for what it's worth). Glamorous international trips aside, board members will have to refine their drinking tastes. Penfolds has ended its four-year partnership with the racing club and Grange is off the menu. The VRC has signed De Bortoli Wines in its place. The Victoria Racing Club board was in good company at Royal Ascot 2025. It was opened by King Charles and Queen Camilla and was also graced by Gillon McLachlan, the king of Melbourne while leading the AFL, and now head of gambling business Tabcorp. The AFL's executive manager for government and stakeholder relations, Jude Donnelly, was also there for the first day of one of the world's most prestigious racing carnivals. Wearing a top hat, McLachlan told UK media that Royal Ascot was the pinnacle. 'There's a lot of Australians in town. I seem to have met hundreds of them,' he said. While on McLachlan, the former AFL top dog has lost his top billing. He was relegated to the graveyard 4pm shift at the recent Macquarie Australia conference, leaving him to compete for attention with .
