Storm Chasers Encounter Damaging Tornadoes, Find Themselves In One

It's one thing to see a tornado, quite another to be inside of it. This past weekend, I was lucky enough (gulp) to do both.
In June 2023, I took my first shot at storm chasing with Raychel Sanner, founder of Tornado Titans. Over the course of three days, we crisscrossed four states - Colorado, Oklahoma, Texas and New Mexico - in search of the powerful vortices. Although we saw some amazing super-cells, the colorful atomic bomb-type atmospheric structures that spawn tornadoes, no clear example of a photogenic twister presented itself.
I was a little disappointed, of course. In 2019, I had been on a C-130 research flight with the U.S. Air Force 'Hurricane Hunters' directly through the center of Dorian, the Category 5 monster that destroyed much of the Bahamas. But I still had not had experienced the tornado aspect of Mother Nature up-close-and-personal.

Beginning in April, tornado season typically ramps up in the southeastern and midwestern parts of the U.S., lasting into June. Storm chasers from all parts of the country converge during this time to find and record their encounters with tornadoes. Some chasers are in it purely for sport, others for scientific research - still others to aid persons who may be negatively impacted by the storms.
Our small group was hopeful that some tornadoes would pop up on an advancing cold front stretching from Texas to Iowa. Early on the morning of April 20, we made the long trek up, by car, to Joplin, Missouri, where significant storms were predicted to fire later that afternoon.
Once we hit Joplin, Jeff Anderson, a chaser since 2016, studied the latest weather apps. The models are quite accurate now, which has attracted hoards of the newcomers to the specialized hobby. In fact, storm chasing is all the rage now. Anderson showed me a map on his phone with dozens of red dots indicating positions of other storm chasers that day.

Soon enough, an emergency warning flashed across the screens of our cell phones. Anderson immediately sprang into action. His app told him that a newly formed tornado was making its way toward Missouri Highway 49, not far from us, and moving at 60 mph, fast for a twister. We made a b-line to the anticipated interception point. Just before entering Barton County, we pulled off to the side of the highway to watch the storm cross in front of us.
Because the tornado was rain-wrapped, it was difficult to see the vortex, buried within a larger storm structure. But the wind and rain, with surprising violence, began to rock our vehicle. It was good we had stopped when we did, Anderson said. Heading further into the thing could have toppled the vehicle and sent us rolling down the embankment.
After the pass, a second twister suddenly popped up on Anderson's app. It was less than 10 miles away, and immediately we went for it. Anderson ultimately positioned us on a small paved road near a farmhouse with a mile of empty, flat field before us.

As we waited, the wind picked up again, this time more quickly. Anderson became concerned. The tornado had suddenly taken an expected right turn and was headed directly toward us. There was nothing we could do at that point. For aerodynamic reasons, we positioned the vehicle so that the front was facing into the wind, and then braced for impact. It was intense, let me tell you, and certainly got my attention.
After four interminable minutes of roaring, shaking and shuddering, the thing had had its way with us. The well-known chaser Reed Timmer drove by in his 'Dominator' TIV (Tornado Interceptor Vehicle) just as the wind was subsiding. A giant tree in front of the farmhouse behind us had fallen, and the occupant was already out surveying the damage. We asked if he was okay. He gave a thumbs-up.

What had happened with this second tornado? Why had we been inside instead of on the periphery as with the first one?
Rain-wrapped tornadoes are especially tricky because often you can't see them with your eyes, and therefore they can sneak up. Sure, weather charts can delineate in real time their movements, and their strength, but losing the actual sight ability makes for more uncertainty. If one suddenly changes direction, and sometimes they do, it's harder to pick up on it and react. Luckily for us it wasn't a bigger tornado - an EF-3 or more - or things may have played out differently.

Later this week, we plan to do more chasing, this time with the hope of seeing a photogenic vortex from a safer distance, something still on my bucket list. Being inside of a tornado, while thrilling and interesting, is not something I want to try again. Better to observe raw nature, however compelling, from afar. Less sweat in the palms of one's hands.

ANDERSON, S.C. (WSPA) – On Sunday, many Anderson County residents were cleaning up the aftermath of Saturday night's storm. From trees toppled on top of homes, to wires ripped from utility poles, the Saturday storm impacted many residents in the City of Anderson. A woman who lives on Northview Avenue told 7NEWS how she watched a large tree come crashing down, landing just feet away from her home. A few minutes down the road, on I Street, Property Manager Kaitlyn Frost said when she went to show potential renters one of her available properties, she discovered a large tree limb on top of the roof. 'We have a bunch of rental properties, and we actually came to show this one to some people who want to rent it, and a limb was on top of the house,' Frost added. 'We weren't expecting it. It is definitely a shock that something so big had fallen, we didn't expect it.' Frost said the large tree limb broke off and took down cable wires before landing on the roof, saying 'tomorrow we are going to get the tree off. We are going to have to replace some wood and the roof rafters and redo the roof. So, hopefully if (the renters) want the house they can move into the house.' Power was also knocked out for thousands in the county. Crews from both Duke Energy and Pike Electric could be seen making repairs. Duke Energy said crews worked overnight Saturday and as of Sunday night, power has been restored for most impacted customers in Anderson County. Anderson county leaders say over 100 calls were made yesterday regarding the storm. Officials told 7NEWS that no injuries were reported. Another active week of severe weather in the central and eastern U.S. will begin with a risk of 100-mph thunderstorm winds in the southern Plains on Sunday, warn AccuWeather severe weather experts. The extreme risk for severe weather, which has only been issued by AccuWeather a handful of times before, highlights the exceptional risk posed to life and property in the region to end the weekend. Additional rounds of destructive storms are expected to occur in the same area and elsewhere during the forthcoming workweek. An extreme risk for severe weather on Sunday Following many active days of severe weather since last week, Mother Nature was not ready to relent on Sunday, with over 110 million people from the Lone Star state to near the nation's capital at risk for damaging storms, warn AccuWeather meteorologists. Of paramount concern on Sunday was an area encompassing the Red River Valley separating Texas and Oklahoma, including portions of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex and Oklahoma City metropolitan area, where AccuWeather has issued a very rare 'extreme' risk of severe storms, for only the second time this year. "A weather regime favorable for high-end severe thunderstorms is expected to develop beginning late in the day on Sunday across the southern Plains," said AccuWeather Meteorologist Brandon Buckingham. Initially from late in the afternoon into the evening, storms may pose a risk of primarily large hail and even an isolated tornado, but the situation is expected to rapidly escalate. "Progressing into Sunday night, individual [storms] can congeal into a powerful line or complex of thunderstorms," said Buckingham. "This will begin to shift the primary risk towards damaging, if not devastating wind gusts."Have the app? This is more than enough to cause significant damage. "These destructive winds will likely result in widespread power outages across the region," said AccuWeather Meteorologist Alexander Duffus. "Power outages in the most-impacted areas can last multiple days, and winds of this magnitude will even pose a greater threat to mobile homes and incomplete construction." Cities included in the high and extreme risk areas include Lawton and Norman, Oklahoma; and Denton, Plano and Wichita Falls, Texas. Portions of Interstates 30, 35 and 40 are also included. It is possible that a derecho can form, which is defined as a widespread, long-lived damaging wind storm that travels at least 240 miles. "The highest risk is expected to be realized during the nighttime hours in these locations, so it is imperative to have the means to receive weather warnings and to act quickly if those warnings are issued," added Buckingham. Other parts of the country are also at risk of severe weather into early Sunday night, including portions of the Midwest, including Chicagoland, and the East from southern Georgia north to the mid-Atlantic. The primary concerns here will be from heavy rain, hail and locally damaging wind gusts. The severe threat will continue into another workweek The risk of damaging thunderstorms will not end with the weekend, as many of the same areas, and elsewhere, will experience severe weather through at least Tuesday, say AccuWeather severe weather experts. A moderate risk for severe weather will be across the Southeast on Monday, extending from near Nashville to Atlanta and points south and west. The storm leading to this severe weather threat is the same bringing the high-end severe weather to the Plains on Sunday. Thunderstorms capable of bringing torrential rain, hail and damaging wind gusts will be in this region, which includes Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, the world's busiest airport. Any storms that roll through near there can lead to disruptions across the nationwide air travel grid. Farther west, it will end up being another stormy day in the southern Plains, intersecting with many areas that will have experienced severe weather into Sunday night. Comparatively, the risk will be lower, but still, cities such as Amarillo and Austin, Texas, as well as Shreveport, Louisiana, will experience a threat for damaging storms. By Tuesday, the overall risk for severe storms will be lower. While heavy rain appears to be the primary concern from the South to the Northeast, a few storms can still be capable of generating gusty winds from around the Interstate 95 corridor to the Atlantic and Gulf coasts. Another area of severe weather will be found across western Texas and New Mexico, with hail and damaging winds the primary concerns. A severe thunderstorm warning was issued by the National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg at 7:42 p.m. on Saturday, June 7. At 7:42 p.m., the NWS issued a statement: "The National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for: Northwestern Laurens County in Upstate South Carolina, Greenville County in Upstate South Carolina, Western Spartanburg County in Upstate South Carolina, Northeastern Anderson County in Upstate South Carolina, Pickens County in Upstate South Carolina, Until 8:30 p.m. EDT. At 7:42 p.m. EDT, severe thunderstorms were located along a line extending from 7 miles northwest of Pickens to 8 miles southeast of Anderson, moving northeast at 45 mph. HAZARD: 60 mph wind gusts. SOURCE: Radar indicated. IMPACT: Expect damage to trees and power lines. Locations impacted include: Greenville Downtown, Easley, Pickens, Greenville Eastside, West Greenville, Greer, Mauldin, Taylors, Simpsonville, and Berea." A severe thunderstorm warning means the area is experiencing or is about to experience a storm with winds of 58 mph or higher or hail an inch in diameter or larger. Once in a shelter, stay away from windows and avoid electrical equipment and plumbing. Keep a battery-powered weather radio nearby in case of loss of power. Remember to bring pets inside. If there is time, secure loose objects outside as these objects often become dangerous flying debris in high winds. Postpone outdoor activities until the storms have passed.
