George Clooney Reveals The 1 Line He Used To Silence Protesters During Broadway Play

Yahoo4 hours ago

George Clooney has opened up about how he dealt with hecklers during the Broadway run of his politically charged play 'Good Night, and Good Luck,' which closed Sunday.
Speaking with CNN's Anderson Cooper, Clooney described interruptions during performances from audience members across the political spectrum.
'From both sides, we've had them yell 'Resist!' and stand up and scream, and we've had others stand up and yell on the other side. That's OK,' Clooney said.
Clooney, who starred as legendary journalist Edward R. Murrow in the play and the 2005 movie he directed of the same name, said he occasionally addressed the disruptions, but only while staying fully in character.
He'd say a line like:
'As a reporter, I've covered protests. I believe our nation was founded on protest and in the great traditions of the First Amendment and the Constitution, I hope you feel satisfied with your protest — and now, you'll sit down and let everybody else…'
When Cooper asked if the response worked, Clooney replied, 'I think it does, kind of. I think people wanted to make their point.'
'It's hard to really argue against speaking truth to power, because it cuts both ways,' he added. 'Both of the powers don't really want to be challenged all that often.'

Eva Longoria reposted a slew of protest-related clips and messages to her Instagram Stories, one of which from @brownissues read: "Cost of groceries keep going up! Gas keeps going up! Rent up! And, this administration decides to spend millions of our tax dollars to scare people from schools, abduct parents from work sites, and wait outside of Immigration Court to punish people 'doing it the right way!'" Singer-songwriter Gracie Abrams shared several reposts to her Instagram Stories too, including a message from her mom, Bad Robot Productions CEO Katie McGrath: "LA is afraid right now because their coworkers were kidnapped at work. Because the guy who sold them dinner was snatched by masked men. And because a bunch of neighbor's parents straight up never came home. As Trump gleefully escalates this with the National Guard, violence is inevitable. But just know this protest started from a place of protection. A place of love. We love our neighbors. Actor Mark Ruffalo, who has criticized President Trump in the past, shared a lengthy message to Instagram with the caption: "When you have working class people going after the poor and other working class people you know you are living in an oligarchy." In his viral post, which racked up over 175,000 likes—including from Jennifer Garner and Rachel Zegler—he said: "The billionaire up at the top is stealing you blind, and you are worried about the poorest of the poor ruining your life? What Happens Next In a message posted to X, formerly Twitter, on Monday, California Governor Gavin Newsom said he plans to file a lawsuit against Trump over his National Guard deployment. "This is exactly what Donald Trump wanted. He flamed the fires and illegally acted to federalize the National Guard. The order he signed doesn't just apply to CA [California]. It will allow him to go into ANY STATE and do the same thing. We're suing him."

Could L.A. ICE Riots Stop the BET Awards? Here's All the Tea

As ICE and the U.S. National Guard continues to ravage the city of Los Angeles, one of the most anticipated events of the year could be in danger of getting shut down. The BET Awards is set to take place Monday (June 9), but many folks fear President Donald Trump's recent antics will spill over to the Black award show. What started as peaceful protests against Trump's unlawful immigration raids quickly took a violent turn after the president sent the National Guard to L.A. without the governor's approval. Over the weekend, the violence escalated resulting in destroyed property, fires and tear gas being thrown at civilians… And who wants to throw a party in the middle of a riot? Organizers for the annual BET Awards insist the ongoing violence will have no impact on the show. In a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, a spokesperson said, 'BET remains committed to the safety of our guests and staff. We are working closely with LAPD and monitoring the situation.' Despite organizers' confidence that the event will go on, many folks online noted just how insane this past weekend has been for the city. 'LA so crazy and random right now,' @NapKingColeP said on X. 'ICE raids, national guard, protesting, BET Awards weekend, and the gay pride parade.' @_itsmelimel added there's 'sooo much sh*t goin on in LA.' She continued, 'ICE protests are going on and ppl are outsideeee celebrating the BET Awards. I am overstimulated.' One TikToker said right now, Los Angeles is very 'dystopian.' @itsneyha added, 'L.A. is continuing to hustle and bustle with DOTY performances and celebrities all in town for the BET Awards while there are literally protests closing down the 101 [freeway].' Widespread violence has taken over the city, and it's going exactly to Trump's plan. The president is set on looking 'tough' as his nation-wide crackdown on immigration continues. He and Calif. Gov. Gavin Newsom have previously come to blows over the state's known sanctuary cities– a city that limits cooperation with ICE and other federal immigration agencies– and now, their beef has reached a new level. Trump took to his favorite social media platform Truth Social on Monday to call for even more violence against protesters. 'Looking really bad in L.A. BRING IN THE TROOPS!!!' he said. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth came out echoing Trump's sentiments. He threatened, 'If violence continues, active-duty Marines at Camp Pendleton will also be mobilized — they are on high alert.' He added in a separate tweet 'The National Guard, and Marines if need be, stand with ICE.' Meanwhile, Gov. Newsom announced plans to sue the administration over the Guard deployment and state's rights, according to CBS News. As of now, the 2025 BET Awards will go on as scheduled starting at 8 p.m. ET Monday night.

George Clooney, Sarah Snook, Nicole Scherzinger and More Stun on the Red Carpet Ahead of the 78th Tony Awards

It couldn't rain on anyone's parade ahead of the 78th Tony Awards. On Sunday evening, Broadway's finest, including George Clooney, Mia Farrow, Lea Michele and Tonys host Cynthia Erivo, gathered outside of Radio City Music Hall under a covered red carpet, avoiding the dreary New York City weather. Additional attendees included Sarah Paulson, Keanu Reeves, Sadie Sink, Katie Holmes and Michelle Williams. Much of the cast, including creator Lin Manuel Miranda, Jonathan Groff, Daveed Diggs, Christopher Jackson, Phillipa Soo, Leslie Odom Jr. and Reneé Elise Goldsberry, walked the carpet embracing other stars who were buzzing with excitement for what the performance could be. 'This is a reunion of sorts, but so many of us see each other regularly,' said original cast member Emmy Raver-Lampman. 'It hasn't been this capacity of all 28 of us being in a room together [so] that is something really special.' Of the night ahead, Diggs said: '[It's] strong turn-up vibes. Wherever these cats are afterward is where you're going to want to be.' Attendees were equally as excited to see Erivo host the award show for the first time. 'I am very excited to just watch her sing her face off,' said James Monroe Iglehart, who donned Dolce & Gabana sneakers and is nominated for his role in 'A Wonderful World: The Louis Armstrong Musical.' Meanwhile, many were eager to see Groff from 'Just in Time,' who also took home the Tony award for best actor in a musical for his role in 'Merrily We Roll Along' last season. Michele, who most recently starred in the revival of 'Funny Girl' walked with her costars Nicholas Christopher and Aaron Tveit from the upcoming product of 'Chess.' While walking the carpet, Michele gushed about her two friends, former 'Glee' costars and nominees Groff and Darren Criss, who she called 'family.' On the carpet, Farrow, who was nominated for her role in 'The Roommate' alongside Patti Lupone, gushed: 'I hope Jonathan Groff is singing.' Farrow also discussed how honored she was to be in the presence of so many Broadway legends. 'I'm in a zone where I have met some really wonderful people in the Broadway community, and that's been exhilarating for me,' she said. 'People I admire so much I get weak-kneed, they're so good and they've been so kind to welcome me, because I'm really not of the community.…I hope to do another play soon. I want to stay [and] keep doing plays.' Actors' Equity Association president Brooke Shields was similarly excited to celebrate all the works from this season. 'It's just nice to see people feeling celebrated. I love this night,' she said. In true Broadway fashion, the carpet included a few surprise moments, most notably a visit from 'The Phantom of the Opera,' who is returning to the New York City theater scene via a top secret immersive experience opening later this summer. Similarly, theater and film fans alike were surprised to learn last week that Tom Felton, who played Draco Malfoy in the 'Harry Potter' series, would be reprising his role in 'Harry Potter and the Cursed Child' on Broadway. 'It's all a bit daunting,' the actor said, adding that he plans to lean on costar and now Broadway regular Daniel Radcliffe for advice. 'I thought it was an elaborate prank when they asked me to do this, and it turns out it's not. I've missed him. Last time I saw him was 16 years ago, and now I get to pick up exactly where we left off, but now Draco is an adult.' He added: 'I know it's familiar. I know how to pronounce the word Potter, but other than that, it's a completely new set of shoes I'm stepping into.' Eager to celebrate Broadway history, many attendees donned looks inspired by current shows and iconic moments in theater history. Shields, who also wore a diamond ring gifted to her by Michael Jackson, sported a bag made out of red curtains from Radio City Music Hall before it was renovated. 'Oh, Mary' creator and star Cole Escola wore a custom Wiederhoeft gown, inspired by Bernadette Peters' look from the 1999 Tony awards. Harry Lennix wore a custom brooch featuring the logo of 'Purpose,' the nominated play which he currently stars in. Meanwhile, Adam Lambert, who recently finished their Broadway run in 'Cabaret,' donned a silver Alexander McQueen suit completed with silver hair, body glitter, silver nails and metallic accessories. Of the inspiration behind the look, they said, 'I was inspired by a Tony award. Literally that was my inspo.' Lambert also said they planned to 'cram in' as many after parties as possible. While many stars, including Groff and Felton, lingered on the carpet mingling with friends, reporters and photographers, many were ushered across quickly. 'Death Becomes Her' stars Megan Hilty and Jennifer Simard hustled across the carpet within minutes of each other. Erivo was similarly rushed in to get ready for her hosting duties. Just as the red carpet was closing down, three of the most talked about stars of the night, Nicole Scherzinger of 'Sunset Blvd.,' Sarah Snook of 'The Picture of Dorian Gray' and George Clooney of 'Good Night, and Good Luck,' who walked hand-in-hand with wife Amal Clooney, quickly scurried in waving hi to all the cameras. Scherzinger closed out the carpet by blowing a kiss as she ran in for a jam-packed night at Radio City Music Hall.
