Australian priest ordained by Pope: ‘God has always been at work'

By Kielce GussieOn the morning of the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart, June 27, thirty-two deacons, from all over the world—representing various countries and regions from the Americas to Oceania—were ordained to the priesthood in St. Peter's Basilic by none other than Pope Leo XIV. One deacon from Melbourne, Australia, learned earlier this month that he had been chosen to be ordained in the papal basilica. With just a few weeks to prepare, Deacon John Vespa invited family and friends and booked a last-minute flight to the Eternal City.
Chosen to represent Australia
Earlier this year, Vespa was studying at Corpus Christi College in Melbourne and one of the priests at the seminary invited all the deacons preparing for ordination to pray about putting their names forward to receive ordination at St. Peter's Basilica.
Vespa took this invitation seriously. 'Over the weekend, I discerned and prayed about it,' he explained, saying he reflected on 'all the men coming together and laying down our life to be ordained.'
After time in prayer, he decided to start the process. With all his papers in order, Vespa submitted his name to the Archbishop of Melbourne, Archbishop Peter Comensoli. Weeks later, he heard he had been chosen. He explained that 'a few weeks ago, on the June 3, I received an email from the Dicastery of Evangelization, which said that I was selected to represent Australia.'
Vespa described feeling incredibly blesses and honored to have been selected and he explained, 'I know that God's hand has always been at work.'
Heart of Jesus, heart of a priest
The priestly ordinations were held during the Jubilee of Priests and on the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, which Vespa said is no coincidence.
'The Sacred Heart of Jesus is a model for the heart of the priest, which is love, mercy, sacrifice,' he said. Even more, Vespa highlighted that Pope Benedict XVI had described priesthood as being born from the heart of Christ.
Full circle
While being ordained by Pope Leo is special in itself, Vespa's vocation story has roots in the Eternal City. In 2018, he and his family were visiting Rome. While inside St. Peter's Basilica, in front of Michelangelo's Pietà, he decided to tell his mother that he had applied to the seminary, and later that day he shared the news with his father in St. Peter's Square.
Returning to Rome for his ordination reminds Vespa of this unique moment because God has 'worked through our lives and that's a special blessing for myself, my family, but also all the people of God.'
Now, Fr. John Vespa's vocational discernment has come full circle—from where it all began to the moment of ordination.
Looking forward, he said he'll not only bring home an incredible memory, but will also 'try to take some pearls of wisdoms from that homily and and live that out in my priestly ministry.'--Vatican News

While Popes generally hold few encounters during their stay in the lakeside town southeast of Rome, the Holy Father welcomed participants in the General Chapters of the Pontifical Institute for Foreign Missions (P.I.M.E.); Religious Teachers Filippini; Religious Teachers Venerini; Daughters of the Church; Salesian Oblate Sisters of the Sacred Heart; and Franciscan Sisters of St. Angela (Angeline Franciscans). The Holy Father began by thanking them for their work and "faithful presence" in so many parts of the world, noting their Founders and Foundresses, "docile to the action of the Holy Spirit, have left you a variety of charisms for the building up of the Body of Christ." Love of God for humanity The Pope observed that their respective Institutes "embody complementary aspects of the life and mission of the entire people of God," naming in particular "the offering of self in union with Christ's Sacrifice, the ad gentes mission, love for the Church preserved and handed on, and the education and formation of young people." These, he said, are different paths all animated by the one eternal reality, namely, "God's love for humanity." "As is customary," the Pope recognized that each of their Congregations has identified particular perspectives through which to reread the legacy received, in order to renew and make its content relevant for today," and he invited them to do this with deep prayer and mutual listening." Benedict XVI's reminder The Holy Spirit, Pope Leo said, quoting Benedict XVI, recalled that it is the Spirit who, "through the contribution of many under the guidance of the Pastors, 'helps the Christian community to walk in charity toward the full truth.'" In this context, the Pope underscored the importance of renewing an authentic missionary spirit, adopting the sentiments 'that were in Christ Jesus,' rooting their hope in God, keeping alive in their hearts the flame of the Spirit, promoting peace, and fostering pastoral co-responsibility within local Churches. Marvelous adventure of following Christ more closely "To place these side by side and recall them together at this moment," Pope Leo marveled, "helps us to appreciate the richness of our being a community—especially as religious—engaged in the same marvelous adventure of 'following Christ more closely.'' "May this renew and strengthen in all of us the awareness and joy of being Church," the Pope said, expressing his hope that this in particular encourage them, in their Chapter discernment, "to think boldly as unique pieces of a design that transcends and involves you beyond your own expectations." God's plan of salvation That design, Pope Leo XIV noted, is "the plan of salvation" by which God desires to bring all humanity back to Himself, as one great family. Like small lights, he urged them to help the light of Christ, "which never fades," spread throughout the earth. Kampar parish celebrates 117 years of faith

By Bernard AnthonyThe Church of the Sacred Heart marked a momentous and spiritually enriching celebration as parishioners gathered for the 117th parish feast of the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, held from June 27 to 29. This year's triduum was especially significant, coinciding with the 350th anniversary of the revelations of the Sacred Heart of Jesus to St Margaret Mary Alacoque, a Visitation nun from Kampar parish has been actively promoting the devotion since the start of 2025. Under the guidance of parish priest Fr Simon Anand, parishioners have been encouraged to deepen their love for Jesus through the Sacred Heart devotion. In support of this, the parish also reprinted 'Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus' booklets for those seeking to grow in faith and triduum was led by Fr Joachim Robert from College General, Penang, who served as the main celebrant and preacher for all three days. Each Mass was preceded by special devotions to the Sacred Heart of Day 1, the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart, Fr Joachim reflected on the Sacred Heart as the ultimate symbol of God's love, mercy, and compassion. He urged the faithful to respond to Jesus' love through prayer, acts of service, and a deepened personal relationship with Him. The Mass was concelebrated by Fr Simon Anand and Fr Michael Dass from Batu Gajah, with around 500 faithful in attendance. Additional tents were set up outside the church to accommodate the large Day 2, the Memorial of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, Fr Joachim spoke about Mary's heart as one fully united with the Heart of Jesus — a heart open to God's promptings and filled with contemplation and trust. He reminded the faithful of Mary's unwavering faith despite her suffering, and how she always points believers back to Jesus. 'Her Immaculate Heart is our refuge,' Fr Joachim said, referencing the message of evening concluded with a candlelight procession through parts of Kampar town. The Blessed Sacrament was carried solemnly in a monstrance by the priests, accompanied by parishioners and pilgrims reciting the Rosary. Fr Joachim encouraged all present to pray for the Church, families, and the wider community during the procession, reminding them that God's love is complete, not superficial. More than 500 people participated in the sacred walk of faith and the triduum, parishioners and visitors had the opportunity to venerate relics of four saints: St Margaret Mary Alacoque; St Frances Xavier Cabrini; St Maximilian Kolbe and St Jeanne JuganOn Day 3 , which coincided with the Solemnity of Sts Peter and Paul, Fr Simon gave a homily reflecting on the lives and mission of these great apostles. He also explained the significance of the venerated relics, emphasising that relics are to be respected and venerated, not worshipped, as a sign of reverence toward the saints' holy Simon explained the importance of the procession as a physical and spiritual act of reverence and evangelisation — bringing Jesus into the streets of Kampar to bless the town and its people. He noted that the procession paused at three locations, where the Blessed Sacrament was raised in adoration and blessing over the Simon also encouraged the faithful to take advantage of the opportunity for confession to receive the Jubilee indulgence. 'As we celebrate the Sacred Heart of Jesus, let us allow our hearts to be touched and transformed by His divine love. Let our faith be visible not only in word, but in action — through reverent prayer, devotion, and love for others.'

SFC says SWAT team promptly deployed to Limbang village following croc attack, dismisses claims govt indifferent
Photo for illustration purposes only. — Bernama photo MIRI (July 9): The Swift Wildlife Action Team (SWAT) was promptly deployed to Kampung Pandam, Limbang following a report on a crocodile attack yesterday evening, said Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC). In a statement, SFC said the team was deployed to assist with the search and rescue (SAR) operation and carry out follow-up efforts to track and capture the reptile involved. 'Our utmost priority is public safety. Measures are already in place to mitigate risks in the affected area,' said SFC. The corporation dismissed allegations from certain quarters that the state government was indifferent to crocodile-related issues, calling such claims baseless. It stressed SFC has consistently implemented proactive initiatives over the years including crocodile capture operations at identified hotspots, installation of warning signage in high-risk zones, awareness programmes with local communities, and a dedicated hotline for public reports of crocodile sightings. SFC reminded all parties to refrain from politicising the matter, stating that public safety remains a top priority for the state government and that it remains committed to fulfilling its responsibilities. Based on monitoring and habitat surveys, SFC said the crocodile population in Sarawak is currently around 25,000, spread across more than 4,500km of river systems and 40 major river basins. 'This widespread distribution poses significant challenges, especially for communities living or conducting activities near riverbanks,' SFC said. To further enhance response and management efforts, SFC has introduced several key initiatives, which include setting up divisional crocodile task forces to coordinate swift responses to crocodile-related incidents. SFC also launched the Sarawak Croc Watch Mobile App, a real-time platform for the public to report crocodile sightings directly to SFC. 'Additionally, SFC has also issued crocodile hunting and harvesting licences under strict regulations for population control in high-risk areas, based on scientific data as well as establishing Crocodile Removal Zone (CRZ) for targeted removal or relocation of crocodiles,' it said. As a long-term measure to address the overpopulation of crocodiles in Sarawak, SFC is also developing a long-term management plan with an Australian consultant, incorporating scientific approach, systematic monitoring, and community participation. 'SFC is also drafting the law Crocodile Rule 2025 to enhance governance and crocodile population management including the aspects of monitoring, enforcement, and trade activities,' added the corporation.
