Tottenham Hotspur Are Locked In A Three-Way Battle For This Talented Full-Back: Good Choice For Spurs?

Yahoo26-05-2025

In a recent report, Trivela claimed that Tottenham Hotspur are locked in a three-way battle for Botafogo full-back Cuiabano. It has been mentioned that Spurs are facing competition from Manchester United and Bournemouth in the race to sign the Brazilian defender.
Cuiabano's Impressive Form In Brazilian Football
Cuiabano has produced a run of impressive displays for the Brazilian outfit over the past 12 months. The 22-year-old has made 50 senior appearances for Botafogo thus far, finding the back of the net six times and grabbing five assists across various competitions.

The Brazilian sensation has been a good defender at the back and deserves a ton of credit for making eight tackles, eight blocks and seven interceptions for Botafogo this season. However, he needs to find a way to improve his ball distribution based on his pass completion rate of 70.2% in the Brazilian Serie A (stats via fbref.com).
Cuiabano's current contract at the Brazilian club will expire at the end of 2027. Thus, Spurs would have to make a convincing offer if they are serious about landing the Brazilian defensive ace this summer.

Is Cuiabano A Good Choice For Tottenham Hotspur?
Cuiabano is a good tackler of the ball and can read the danger well to secure possession back for his side on the defensive third of the pitch. He usually clears his lines when the opposition are on the front foot.

However, the Brazilian left-back has to find a way to improve his passing accuracy if he wants to fulfill his potential. Furthermore, he might need some time to cope with the physicality and high intensity of the Premier League if Tottenham manage to sign him this summer.
Cuiabano would undoubtedly bring more quality to Ange Postecoglu's backline. He is good enough to compete with Destiny Udogie for a regular starting spot at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium next season.
At 22, Cuiabano has the potential to be a future star in English football. Therefore, he would be a decent choice for the North London club in the long run. However, Postecoglu has to be patient with his development before he can get the best out of the gifted full-back at Tottenham.

Mets program helping Ronny Mauricio and other Latin American players learn English: ‘I feel like we have one of the best programs'

While in Los Angeles last week, Ronny Mauricio was struck by the amount of palm trees he saw. They line the streets from the beach to about 100 miles east in the suburbs, they dot the landscapes on every corner, and they're featured prominently around Dodger Stadium, the biggest and loudest stadium Mauricio had ever experienced. The Mets infielder, called up to the big leagues for the first time since September 2023, struggled to remember the translation for the trees, so he described them in detail using stellar English. Advertisement A native of the Dominican Republic, Mauricio already possesses some high-end tools, and he added another one while he was sidelined in 2024 with an ACL injury by working on his English. Describing the visual images of the iconic Southern California trees was important for Mauricio, who is trying to continually talk to his teammates, coaches and even the media in English to become fluent and conversational. 'I'm trying to talk everyday with the guys in here and with my teacher too,' Mauricio told the Daily News. 'So we try to just speak in English. If there is something I don't know, I try to ask somebody to learn more.' Mauricio is utilizing a program offered by the Mets designed to ease language barriers between players and staff. The 7 Facts Learning Management System offers resources in both Spanish and English, and is available for members of the team at all levels of the organization to support player development. It addresses language learning and baseball development using seven components: Leadership support, multilingual support, mobile-friendly learning, video-based training, cultural adaptation and acculturation training, and and through progress tracking and feedback. It integrates AI learning, helps with baseball-specific terms, addresses social media and personal branding, nutrition and fitness, and interview preparation. Advertisement The program drew high praise from manager Carlos Mendoza, one of only three active MLB managers born in Latin America. 'I feel like we have one of the best programs when it comes to the education of our Latin American players,' he said. The Venezuelan skipper was encouraged by his mother, an English teacher, to learn the language growing up. Mendoza is lauded by just about everyone around the Mets and Yankees for his strong communication abilities in both languages, with his bilingual abilities playing right into that. But even Mendoza had to get used to public speaking and talking to the media when he came to Queens, since his previous job as a bench coach didn't require dealing with reporters on a daily basis. It's intimidating, and Mendoza knows this first-hand. Advertisement 'It's not easy at all,' Mendoza said. 'Credit the players, and credit our program. Whether it's player development or here at the big league level, we continue to educate those guys. Not only giving them the ability [to communicate in English], but to go out there and face you guys with the cameras and all that, it's not easy.' At a time when new consumers and athletes alike struggle to understand what function media plays in sports and how to differentiate between different types of media members, the Mets are helping their young Spanish-speaking players navigate a key part of professional sports. The media is present on the road and at home, with a traveling media party that consists of in-house media like SNY and the team radio broadcasters, as well as newspaper beat reporters and sometimes even national insiders. Fans typically get to know players through social media and through writers and reporters. Players can benefit from the media by using them to set the record straight when a false narrative takes hold, they can add color or context to a story, or take accountability when it's needed. MLB teams are required to provide players with full-time translators, but having a third party present for interviews isn't always ideal. Sometimes, you just want to tell your own story and make your own connections. Advertisement Outside of baseball, it's a way for Mauricio to connect with his son Liam. Now 5, Liam is learning English right alongside his dad. Knowing his baseball life would primarily be in the States, Mauricio enrolled him at a school in Florida where he stays with the infielder's mother. 'For my son, I want him to go to a school where they're teaching him how to live life [here] and everything,' Mauricio said. 'He's started speaking it now, he's in school learning English.' Liam's English is coming along, and he's happy in the school, even if he misses his father. 'He just told me, 'Papi, when are you coming back?' Papi, when do I see you?' Mauricio said. Advertisement The 24-year-old Mauricio will soon bring him to New York so he can see him play in the big leagues again, and remember it this time as well. During his last call-up, Liam was too young to fully grasp the magnitude of the moment. If it works out, maybe he'll get to see his dad do something just as impressive as hitting a home run: doing an interview on-camera in a different language. 'You've got to remember that,' Mauricio said.

Omari Hutchinson and England lay down a marker

England won the last edition of the Under-21 European Championship with players who have become Premier League stars. The class of 2023 included Cole Palmer, still at Manchester City before his move to Chelsea, Morgan Gibbs-White and Anthony Gordon, who had impressive first seasons at Nottingham Forest and Newcastle United. Advertisement The make up of this year's squad in Slovakia is slightly different, but the aim similar: to win and display why they are highly rated. They opened the group with relative ease, beating Czech Republic 3-1, but it was not a victory dominated by the goalscorers. Newcastle's Tino Livramento won player of the match from left-back, and was run closely by Ipswich Town's Omari Hutchinson, who could benefit from having a strong tournament. His now-former club team-mate Liam Delap has completed a move from Ipswich to Chelsea. Delap was part of Lee Carsley's preliminary squad for this tournament, but signing for Chelsea saw the Club World Cup take priority. Hutchinson insists this tournament is his 'main focus' rather than thinking about what could be on the cards for next season but performances like this will have been noted by clubs wanting a winger who can play inside. The 21-year-old, who signed for Ipswich from Chelsea last summer for an initial £20million after playing a starring role in their promotion from the Championship while on loan, played as one of two No 10s in a 4-2-2-2 and dovetailed effortlessly with Livramento to create down England's left flank. Early in the game it was Hutchinson finding a central pocket that allowed the full-back to burst forward and cause problems, whereas Livramento, another former Chelsea youngster, did well to find Hutchinson in dangerous areas. This came together later in the first half. Hutchinson received the ball on halfway, turned and drove through the centre of the pitch. He then laid the ball to Livramento whose cross found scorer Harvey Elliott at the back post, via James McAtee. It was a moment that showed the importance this tournament can have in allowing players to be expressive in areas they can be most effective. 'I try not to be too restrictive in the positions that players play,' Carsley said in his post-match press conference. 'It's more about the attributes and areas of the pitch we can get them into. I've seen Omari so many times at Ipswich get in that pocket, turn and drive with the ball. If he can do that more often for us and be even more selfish when he's driving, he'll never get any complaints from me. The more players we've got that can play for England, the better chances we've got. Advertisement 'There's definitely a tendency, and I've done it in the past, to over-coach because of the amount of time you get with the players. If you give someone too much information, they forget it. So it's just two or three points per player on the areas of the pitch we can cause the opposition a problem.' Pushed on whether he feels he can be more selfish, Hutchinson said: 'I guess so. When I look back at the video, I'll see what I can work on. I'm just trying to improve and impact the game more. If he's telling me to dribble more, then I'll try to dribble more.' McAtee and Elliott combining directly for the goal signified a slightly different element of the platform this tournament can give players. Elliott is one of two players, alongside Charlie Cresswell, who was in the 2023 squad and he admitted last week that he doesn't want to be 'wasting years' of his career by not playing regular first team football at Premier League champions Liverpool. Cresswell, fresh from his first season in France with Toulouse completed the scoring after Jonathan Rowe, of Marseille, had made it 2-0. McAtee opted to join this squad as captain rather than play in the Club World Cup for Manchester City. The 22-year-old said that he hopes that the decision could help 'kick-start' his career in a way the 2023 tournament did for Palmer, who had been his team-mate since the under-11s at City. Palmer started that tournament on the bench, but scored one and assisted two in the semi-finals against Isreal. In the final three days later, it was his free-kick that deflected in off Curtis Jones to win England the tournament. He soon backed that up with goals in the Community Shield and UEFA Super Cup before joining Chelsea for an initial £40million and hasn't looked back since. With 13 of the 23 players in the squad aged 22, they are reaching the stage of their careers where the next step could be the most crucial. Advertisement That can be seen across the tournament too, with Germany's 23-year-old Nick Woltemade for example. The 6ft 6in striker was one of the anticipated players to watch after scoring 17 goals for Stuttgart last season. He underlined that by scoring a hat-trick in Germany's 3-0 win over Slovenia in England's group. That age and experience across the squad should bode well for England though. This opening match was played in front of 8,087 spectators that was a made up of at least 95 per cent Czech Republic supporters. Despite this, Carsley liked how his players 'controlled the crowd and expressed themselves.' With Slovenia to come before Germany, that should provide Hutchinson and England with another opportunity to show what they can do.

Goals either side of the break from Harvey Elliott and Jonathan Rowe had put Lee Carsley's side in control at the MOL Arena. Daniel Fila reduced the deficit in the 50th minute, before England defender Charlie Cresswell headed in a third from a corner with 15 minutes left. Matheus Cunha heads to Old Trafford Manchester United confirmed the signing of Matheus Cunha from Wolves on a five-year deal, with the option of a further 12-month extension. 'I am going to give my all for the team and Real Madrid fans. 'I want to win many titles and I want to be a winner here and enjoy playing alongside the many great players.' What's on today? Manchester City and Chelsea continue their preparations for the Club World Cup, which starts in the United States on Saturday.
